Hello everyone,There have been recent questions about our participation / endorsement of the "Heritage Cup" started by fans in San Jose a few years ago. Below you will find a copy of the e-mail I sent to organizer Rob Stevenson on December 22, 2010.* * * * * Hello Rob, While I appreciate your efforts to grow and support soccer, I am sorry to report that the Vancouver Southsiders (and Vancouver fans in general) are not interested in endorsing, participating in or promoting the Heritage Cup.In our view, football heritage is defined by years of fiercely contested matches and events that give supporters reasons to feel pride and misery alike. For Vancouver’s fans, those memories come from close to 35 years of league and playoff matches won and lost against Seattle and Portland, and there can be no substitute.I share your distaste for cheesy North American club names, and I applaud your efforts to celebrate the past. However, the Southsiders and many other Vancouver fans have made it abundantly clear to me that the Heritage Cup does not at all reflect what our football heritage is really all about. Many within our membership feel that endorsing the Heritage Cup would be tantamount to buying into the artificial rivalries that seem to exist in MLS today for no other reason but for the fact that the clubs involved don’t have rivalries with any historical or emotional context behind them. We therefore cannot proceed along that path in good conscience, as it would seemingly devalue the Cascadia Cup’s significance.I’m sure this response comes as a disappointment, but it is in no way intended as a sleight against San Jose or its fans. We just happen to believe that if you are going to play for a cup, it should be a cup that gets the blood boiling in players and supporters alike. For us, that’s the Cascadia Cup, and the Voyageurs Cup for the Canadian championship.I have cc’d my colleagues at the ECS and Timbers Army so that they are aware of our position on this matter. My sense is that their members have arrived at similar conclusions as ours, but it is best that they address the issue with you directly.Sincerely,John Knox, presidentVancouver Southsiders
