Another possibility is that the Whitecaps are reluctant to add another 30+ defender. Jun Marques Davidson and Alain Rochat are 29 years old. Jay DeMerit is 32, Lee Young-Pyo is 35, and Joe Cannon is 37. We’d be replacing Martin Bonjour, who’s 27, with Carlos Bocanegra, who’s 33. The average age would be 33 of our “back six”. They could bring in someone younger, who hasn’t played in MLS before, and not have to worry about the allocation ranking. It’s only useful on returning players.
Latest stuff to come out of Scotland today is:
Rangers will definitelty not be in SPL as six clubs are now saying they will vote against them
New Gers owner Charles Green has said he will go after players and clubs for compensation if they walk away:
"I can assure those players and clubs who may be interested in signing them that Rangers will seek damages for breach of contract and for inducement to break contracts.
We have no wish to go to court on these matters but the players involved, their agents and clubs who may be pursuing these players should be in no doubt that we will do whatever it takes to protect the club’s interests."
"There is no breach of contract. The registrations of the players are held by the SFA and a question would arise if a player signed a contract with another club outside of Scotland.
My belief is that the SFA will issue an International Transfer Certificate. FIFA will insist an ITC is delivered so that the player does transfer and there will then be an issue of compensation.
The transfer will take place. Our position is that the players are out of contract, can do what they want and there is no question of any compensation."
So who knows what will happen next.
But that rummor seemed so solid!! Come on, Vancouver Rapids!
Interesting that everyone thinks he'd replace Bonjour. The amount of times DeMerit gets caught out of position is astonishing. Just because he throws in a couple of crunching tackles doesn't mean he's top notch. Bonjour has been the better defender all season long apart from the first 2 games
See, I'm with rodderzzz. When DeMerit is good he's impressive, but when he's off it's mind-numbing. So when Jay wasn't on the team bus after the LA match, I thought this may be have been an indication of the way the team was going ... and I wasn't surprised.
Don't know anything about the author, but an interesting look at the whole TUPE side of things. If this guy is right in his interpretation of what "administration" represents, and fair consultation with the players in question, it seems the newco doesn't have a particularly strong case (which isn't to say it won't end up in courts for ages):
And now it's posited that the Fire still own his MLS rights. This system rules.
EDIT: Sorry. According to multiple sources, the Fire do not have his rights.
I love rumours and I'm enjoying the possibility of another signing .......I just can't help but think that replacing Bonjour, who is an outright beast and one of our most consistent, with Bocanegra, might not pan out...it might not send the right message....I like the talk about a developmental guy...Stanese in the lineup, give Carlyle a game or two and then sign an attacking midfielder.
Is it assumed that Boca will be better than Bonjour, I haven't seen dude play, other than that recent Canada game.?
IMHO from what I've read, Newco doesn't have a leg to stand on long term. Players are suppose to show up Thursday for the start of preseason and will be due wages on that day. Rangers are currently without a league, and unless they can weasel their way back into SPL, they will have no revenue streams apparent affording player wages pre-75% cut that they took midseason.
It's in Newco's best interest to bluster away about compensation and maybe even "invest" in the first or even second paycheques of players to ensure proper ownership of contracts through a good portion of the transfer window. But they can't afford the wages and the law in on the players' side when they walk for free when they don't get paid. It's not even in their interests to get into a long legal battle over it because they will lose the players and a pile of money in fees.

In my opinion Bonjour has been better than DeMerit. We would have three top CBs if we signed Bocanegra. Not sure how you deal with that if you don't need to rotate your defenders.
is there a source that says that we gave away our rights? why would rennie do something like that? bocanegra is amazing for the us national team
as per the twitter feed: Okay: "MLS confirmed to the Province that the Fire have no rights to Bocanegra" @UnionRumors @aftncanada @vwfcrumors

The assumption on my part was based on the obvious fact that Jay and Bocanegra are buddies. I can't see Carlos coming here without DeMerit.

According to FOX Soccer, the Union have signed former Chicago Fire defender Bakary Soumare, selecting him with the top spot in the MLS Allocation Order, which the Union acquired from the Vancouver Whitecaps in a trade completed last week.
Man. I am really scratching my head now. What is going on here. Must be some sort of a bigger deal at play here. ie an actual trade.
We'd need to lose a player to sign Boca, anyway. Might be looking to trade with NE.
Well I would have to ask "What are the revs looking for?"

kicked our ass.
Is there a chance that this was simply the conclusion of the Le Toux trade?
I don't remember future considerations being mentioned in that deal.
The Revs should throw us a bone for gifting Nguyen to them!
Hmmmmmm according to Shaddy, Boca & JD are hanging out together in Cali
Couldn't the Whitecaps just pass on the guy and then Philly do the deal with NE?

I just wish Bobby Lenarduzzi could have commented on this rumour instead of not commenting on rumours.
Is this the only serious league on the planet where you find out about significant transactions a week after the fact?
I think it takes most people that long to work out what are the rules are for each transaction.
How did MLS manage to make football so complicated?
soccer by Ives' website states it's a done deal - the Schadd seems to have accepted the deal, only the date - tuesday or wednesday (opening of transfer market) to be officially announced. Ives states that the deal is a simple allocation - $100-125,000 (for the rest of the year, that would be equivalent to signing someone for double the value.) Schadd's lengthy explanation didn't deal with the valid question by Gof....do you have to sign/deal the first MLS returnee signed by the league - or can you pass/keep your spot? The answer seems to be you have to deal with the player. I think the Caps" brain trust got the message that Bocanegra wasn't ready to immediately sign (maybe he's waiting for Landycakes to head to Everton so he can live and play in LA.

You play the 3-4-3 and kick ass with a total all attack, all the time philosophy!!! :)
Think about it:
----JD - Boca - MB ----
YPL --- Gersh --- JMD --- Rochat
----LeToux--Hassli--DC
Collapses back to the 5-4-1 on defense.
No, turns out you can pass but the fact that the Caps haven't is either because they wanted what Philly offered (cash) and have either done a deal with NE for them to trade their spot or to take Boca and then trade him to Caps for someone.
Or Boca isn't heading back to MLS and they didnt want to wait for anyone else.

Are the del Piero to Galaxy RUMMORS dead? Hadn't heard anything for a bit. I figured he would be coming in with the exit of one of the current LA DP's (without the league office finding a way to give them another DP spot).
Apologies if this has already been posted. Quote by Willie Rennie:
“There would be a number of Rangers players we would be interested in but it depends on whether they would be available on free transfers or on reduced transfer fees.
Good old Willie Rennie of the Vancouver Rapids.
Looks like Bocanegra wants to stay with Rangers. Says he is waiting to see what division they will be playing in before deciding.
well this all makes sense..caps werent going to wait around from Boca and IMO got a good deal for their allocation ranking--hopefully top 4 draft ranking could be very futile
That article was in the Daily Record days ago and is all bollocks.
He's saying he'd like to stay, but is basically saying only if in SPL and playing Champions League. He's just trying to appease the fans who are turning on a lot of the players who are leaving.
A current international is not going to play in the Scottish Third Division.
He'll still be leaving.
The first test case is going to be due soon though.
Norwich are going to apply to the FA for the transfer of Steven Whittaker. The FA will then have to contact the SFA for his registration papers and they're going to say they can't hand them over, so then it will go to FIFA.
Will take a few weeks to sort out and even then only a temporary transfer certificate is going to be issued.
I'm not sure the Caps or MLS will be arsed going through all this.
@SportingKC via twitter:
VERY limited # of tix left for tomorrow's 7 PM match. #USMNT's Carlos Bocanegra (@bocaboca3) will be there. Will you? http://t.co/8e1B1KHz
I read somewhere on MLSsoccer.com that New England Revolution is interested in bringing Bocanegra to strengthen their defense. Lowers our chances of trading for him now..
Also heard Rapids wanted to get him, but they were to low on the allocation ranking to get him.
Pete Schaad said that Whitecaps were very interested however Boca was too expensive i am guessing 300K range and the caps didn't wanna spend the money hence the trade to Philly
The ladies in Vancouver would love him:
Maybe him and Kesler could do a shoot together. Dare i dream :x
Rollins is of the mind TFC will make a play for Bocanegra...
