I like this idea as well.
Seathanaich, I've sent you $40 in am email money transfer. I upped my donation because, well, this looks like its going to be awesome.
So will this trophy be held by supporters (rather than clubs), like the Cascadia Cup?
Use BC colours.
Sorry for the long post, but there’s a lot here to respond to.
rovers_adam said: personally, I don't think we need to name the groups or teams "Donated in 2012 by Supporters of Football in British Columbia".
1 - It sounds like this is widely agreed upon, so that's what it will be. As soon as we went from two to three "groups" participating it started to get unwieldy.
tedward said: Blue and yellow (with red accents) makes sense to me, but blue and white is too partisan.
2 - I thought about this, too. Whitecaps’ main colour is white, Fraser Valley’s is red, Highlanders’ is black. For comparison, the Voyageurs Cup colours are red with a touch of white. This shouldn’t be modified IMO just because one team in it (Toronto FC) uses those same colours, because red and white are our national colours. The question then becomes: regardless of the clubs currently playing (Whitecaps U-23 isn’t necessarily going to be competing for this trophy forever), what are British Columbia’s colours? Our flag is dominated by blue and white, with yellow and red also prominent. British Columbia teams at the Canada Games, etc tend to use either blue and white with yellow trim, or blue with yellow.
I think the main colour should be blue, and I suspect everyone will agree. I would prefer to see white compliment that; for example, I’m planning on banners with white lettering on blue (see 7 below). What do people think? (1) Blue primarily, white secondarily, with yellow and red accents? (2) Blue and Yellow, with red accents and white where required?
Central Richmond said: Seathanaich, I've sent you $40 in am email money transfer. I upped my donation because, well, this looks like its going to be awesome.
3 - Thank you - I hope that everyone else likes the final product (bearing in mind that nothing like this can please everyone) as much as I do. I’m a total technophobe, how does an email money transfer work? I have a Paypal account - is that how you sent it? Please send me your name for engraving on the bottom of the base in a private message on this site.
Brettness37 said: how much are you trying to raise and how far are you from the goal?
4 - The wooden base is going to be $50 for wood, labour, and stain, because I've made a friend of the local high school wood shop teacher. Original quotes were ridiculous - $500+ from local furniture makers, and $400+ from "trophy" stores. The stuff via trophy stores for a provincial silhouette was not only ridiculously expensive, it was small and looked shit compared to what is now being made. The base is Western Maple from a tree cut down in Maple Bay, Vancouver Island.
5 - Someone registered the website, and that will need to be renewed annually. I’ll look through this thread, note who did so, and that’s their “donation” to the Plate. Ben (Lord Bob) set up the data on the site, is updating it, and has said he will improve the look of it.
6 - The plate itself is going to be fairly inexpensive - $40 for it, and another $60 for the engraving (so about $100). We ruled out solid silver early on due to cost (about $2000) and likelihood of being stolen. I could find nothing octagonal, so the Plate is round and 12" in diameter, the largest size of presentation plate that trophy stores stock and carry. Despite visiting lots of stores, I could find nothing in jewellery stores (even Birks) or department stores (Bay) that was silver or silver plate, except for obvious "serving tray" style plates, which weren't good for this trophy. I wish the Plate was a few inches bigger, but nothing I could find is; proportionally it looks good on the size of base I am making. I’m biased, but I think this is going to turn heads from fans and players, because it is most definitely not a generic cheap cup-style trophy. The cost of the Plate (and base) is pretty much covered.
7 - And then . . . Shawnster suggested making a game day banner for this cup - like how CONCACAF, FIFA, etc have either banners or advertising boards at centre field during games, saying the venue name, or the event. That's a brilliant idea, and if we want this to be a big deal, a necessary item. I have priced out vinyl printed banners, and am going to get a good quality one made one up in the same font as the Plate is engraved with. 2' x 30' (or 3’ x 20’) is $350 (grommets, etc). Stakes and zap-straps will cost another $10 or so, and up she goes on game day, at centre field (with the permission of the clubs, of course), so the fans in the main cannot help but know that have attended a Juan de Fuca Plate” game.
8 - And then . . . I realised that we should have ribbons in the colours of the winning team on the base of the Plate (like the Voyageurs Cup), since that always looks great. I haven't priced those yet, but will. They won’t cost much. They’ll be silk ribbon with metal clips, and they might have to be hand made. I’ll make three sets: black/gold/white for VHFC, white/navy/sky for VWFC, red/white for FVM.
9 - So, to answer Brettness37, I'd like to raise about $900. That would pay for the Plate, base, and team ribbons (the small stuff); and it would pay for 2 x game day banners, one based in Victoria, one based in Vancouver (we can’t realistically expect to ferry one back and forth). We could pay for the Plate, base, ribbons, and 1 x game day banner with $550 or so. If we raise more, we can do more. Firstly getting a second game day banner, but once that’s paid for, we should consider a carrying case to protect the trophy. How much is raised so far? I’m putting in $50, and have another $50 in cash from khoehne and Shawnster. I have $100, and need another $450 or so. Everyone who donates $25 will get engraved on the base (and I can add more names at any time). Anyone who donates in the future can have his donation go towards the game day banners, then potentially a carrying case for the trohphy.
Blue and White Army said: So will this trophy be held by supporters (rather than clubs), like the Cascadia Cup?
10 - Absolutely. This trophy will be owned and presented by supporters. The PDL might disappear or change, teams will come and go. Like the Voyageurs Cup has changed, so too we need to retain control of this so that we call the shots, not someone else.
I stated early in this discussion that I would like to see two people be trustees for this award - one on the Island, one on the Mainland. I’m going to put myself forward as the Island-based trustee. I would like someone to volunteer to be the Mainland-based trustee. The trustees would: control, maintain, and bring to games the trophy and the banners associated with the competition; be responsible every year for making sure the web site is renewed; be responsible for keeping the web site updated (or having someone do so); and provide a public record (on the JdF Plate website?) of funds received, names of donors, and costs for the Plate and its associated equipment. So far I haven’t spent a penny, but once I do I’ll post that here.
Beautiful.
Are people collecting on Sunday or is an electronic transfer the best bet?
Hey Adam - I don't mind either way. Whatever works. Whoever collects just needs to provide me with the proper names of all donors. I'll post on this site so people can double check name spellings before I get the "donor plate" engraved.
One other point - any funds collected now, but not spent immediately, will be saved up by the trustees with the funding priorities being (1) a second game day banner, (2) a protective carrying case, (3) anything else we think would add to the occasion (3' x 5' JdFP flags, to be flown beside the Canadian and BC flag on the field?).

UPDATE
1 - The base for the trophy is now cut out, and an evening of sandpapering awaits. Note that the plate supports are not attached yet (ie they're not perfectly positioned in this photo). The wood we used has a bit of character, which is visible in the photo.

2 - $160 received from Devon Rowcliffe, Chris Withers, John Humphries, Paul Sabourin-Hertzog, Bryan Freitag on 9 June via Devon Rowcliffe.
Any way we can pay you electronically, seathanaich?

Yes, Rovers Adam (clever chap) emailed his donation. He sent it to drew.shaw@sunlife.com. Solar threatened to do something similar, but I haven't seen his.
Danimal has volunteered / been anointed co-trustee of the JdF Plate. All donations can go to him, and I'll collect them from him when I attend the JdF Plate game in Richmond on 8 July.

Cool. You'll get mine this week.
I've updated the website standings and am trying to get some ideas together for the proper layout. Has anyone got any action pictures of the Fraser Valley/Abbotsford Mariners, as well as a shot of the Lake Side Buoys, which could be used for the site's header?
At the last game, I was handed a donation by someone wishing to remain anonymous. I have the cash and was hoping to pass it along. Who should I look to pass it along to? I'm hoping this Saturday's game would be alright for that person.

I can take your donation Kris.

There are photos of the Lake Side Buoys on the Highlanders website (Bravehearts' Songs), and on the LSB Facebook page, including our recent one supporting Cardiff City.
You can make the colours of the web site white and blue, with yellow and red details.
Kris, if you get it to Danimal, he'll get it to me. Cheers.

Perhaps I should put it more clearly: pictures to which we clearly have either the copyright or permission to use. No, I don't really believe the Victoria Highlanders would sue me for just ganking pictures off their website, but surely better that they don't think even for a second "those guys are dicks".
(Also, from an artistic perspective, it would be nice to use pictures that aren't in wide circulation elsewhere.)

I'll try to remember to bring a camera to a game, but everything on the LSB Facebook site that has been taken and posted by a member is probably in the 'knock yourself out' category.
EDIT: and I'll add "and anonymous donors" to the end of the list of donors!

OPINIONS ON JdF PLATE LOGO
Please let me know which of these logos you prefer for the JdF Plate. All opinions and votes welcome. These are (poor) sketches, and once I get some feedback I'll ask someone with talent to turn the most popular into the logo of the Plate.
The colours of the competition are blue and white, with red and yellow (ie the colours of British Columbia). 2, 5, and 6 utilise the outline of the base of the actual trophy. 6 is my favourite.
Full pages, for quick comparison. Sorry, they're sideways.

I'm a little confused by options 2 and 6 being in the shape of the wooden base.
How exactly do the base and the plate interact with each other?
Although I'm confused, options 3, 5, and 6 jump out at me. And we probably don't want to write "PDL" on the trophy, in case the league (name) changes.
I think they are for the website and banner, but I'm not 100% on that.
3 is my preference if I'm not mistaken on the intent of the logo.
Either 3 or the crest for 6 without the outline.
And I agree: avoid actually carving or engraving the name of the league (or, indeed, the name of any of the teams or cities! This is an unstable business.)
Yes, I was just tossing around ideas, and agree that "PDL" shouldn't be in the logo for the Plate. If you like number 5, don't worry, we wouldn't have "PDL" in a final version. Thanks for the opinions so far, looking forward to more. Also "From the Fans - For the Game": good, or cheesy? Acceptable if I translate it into Latin?
Oh, and to clarify: the Logo will be on the game day banner, on the website, and hopefully used by the clubs involved to promote the competition.>

The Plate itself rests on the base, much like sheet music on a piano. Using the silhouette of BC in 2 and 6 isn't to replicate the base, it's just the outline of the province, trying to find what looks best for the logo.
Thanks Ted! It's narrowing down to 3 (Dogwood), 2 (flag on Province), or 6 (Plate on Province). Any other votes / opinions?
Who voted for #2? You, Drew?
Blue_and_White_Army said: Who voted for #2? You, Drew?
LOL - you're right. See, this is why I need feedback (and proofreading) from others.
AJAX79 said: #3 tweeked a bit though, no PDL
Don't worry, they all need to be tweaked - these are just design concepts. Imagine them after being re-done by an expert, not as is in felt pen sketches. The "PDL" is already nixed, I was just trying things out. And with Pat's vote and Devon's comment, it looks like a two-horse race between 3 and 6.
Not to be a knob, but #3 kind of reminds me of these:

:(|)
When someone says "not to be a knob" you can generally take it to the bank that person is about to be a knob.
Not to not be a knob, but I also have a $25 donation. B_a_W_A...if you're at Doolins pregame or the match itself I'd like to give you the cash on Saturday.
Edit : Or is Danimal the proper person to pass on my donation to..?

Danimal is now the go-to guy for JdFP donations, as he is present at more events than I am.
Thanks for the votes, and Devon there is nothing wrong with saying you don't like one of the possibilities, and why you don't like it.
Oh, and Solar - your donation has been received and noted! Cheers.
I like #3, or as has been mentioned by others #6 without the province outline behind it.
What about adding rings outside and inside the text on #3 to make it more of a badge like #6? Then the question would be between the crown from the flag or the dogwood, both great provincial emblems, and final wording.
UPDATE
Thank you to Rovers Adam, Lord Bob, Bled For Days, and Central Richmond (nice passwords you guys are using for those money transfers, by the way!). Lord Bob, any chance you could change the colours on the website from white on black to either white on blue or blue on white?
Based on opinions expressed here, I'll be going with a re-worked version of 3 for the logo (sadly it got more votes and commentary than my preferred number 6), which will be printed on the banner and forwarded to Lord Bob for the website, and to the three PDL teams involved for their use (especially Mike Lazar in his Whitecaps articles).
Financials: We now have the trophy, base, and a huge game day banner costs covered. Further donations will go towards a second game day banner (so there's one at all games in Victoria and Vancouver, and we don't have to shuffle it back and forth). With Highlanders unable to even win the games they are dominating (last week versus Crossfire), the trophy looks destined for Vancouver this year.

A proper website, which will incorporate blue as its primary background colour, is in the ridiculously early stages at the moment. I'm going to try and really bury it on the weekend.
Sounds great - logo will be forwarded in jpg format once I have it back.
