Chicken and waffles aka "put a bird on it" at Portland craft on main.

    Superb.

Also: am pleased that there's proper shepherd's pie; it always pains me to see it on menus made with beef.

Couldn't agree more. What is even more lame, is the Vancouver chapter of the timbers army meets there on thursday nights to discuss all things related to fixies and LEED certification.

My comments were tongue n cheek. Just think the name is weak.....and therefore why not adopt all things Portland. However, may still catch drinks here at some point in the near future.

Had the Shepherds today. it was delicious. Would've liked some more vegetables on the side, but it was very good. and it's made with lamb, not beef! I recommend it.

It's a bad name choice for sure. It will annoy some people (like us), and others who are not that beer savvy will not get the reference. shit choice.

I'd suggest that the only people who are bothered by the name "Portland" post on this forum. The average Vancouverite is either not bothered by Portland, or in fact really likes the city and doesn't get sucked into sports-related rivalries.

I fall into the latter group. The only time Portland bugs me is when the Whitecaps are involved. Otherwise I can't think of a better place to eat, drink and shop that's within a day's drive of home.

I was not suggesting that it had anything to do with soccer. More like a slightly embarrassing fascination with a nearby city, like Seattle's Best Coffee when we have great coffee here.

    A tad. Hypercriticalofeveryoneelsescommentsist much?

I just think it's odd for one demographic in this city to be so enamoured with another demographic of a similar city. For some reason I don't feel the same way about most other examples of this, though I do think the recent spate of "English" pubs opening is also embarrassing.

I guess it's a two-way street ... unless one disagrees with you. You call me hypercritical for believing you're hypercritical? Where does it end?

There are WAY too many Irish pubs in the world too. So what? Don't visit them. Just not sure why it's such a big deal that someone wants to honour Portland. If that makes me hypercritical, then so be it.

It's a Canada-wide problem. "Montana's" and "Boston Pizza" were both formed in Alberta, and Canadian bands gratuitously mention American geography in their songs as much or more than the average American band does. Canadians generally have a sycophantic / insecure need to name things after American things, as if Americans themselves can't be counted on to do this without our toadying. Anything in Vancouver needing to call itself "Seattle" or even "Portland" is truly indicative of a massive inferiority complex.

I agree about too many faux-Irish and faux-English pubs. They're Canadian pubs, and that's nothing to feel embarassed or inferior about. Being called "Bard and Banker" or "Ceilidh's" is great. Adding "Irish Pub" afterwards is fawning and embarrassing. If you have to say "Irish Pub" in your name, then you obviously aren't.

The only thing that indicates an inferiority complex is the need the bring this up in the first place. I can guarantee you nobody gives a rat's ass about having "Boston Pizza" in Bellingham, or "Seattle's Best" in Toronto.

There's a restaurant in my neighbourhood call "Bombay Behl". Do you honestly believe it's so named because the owners feel our Indian food is inferior to that in Bombay?

Just found out I know one if the owners of Portland craft. He also helps organize Vancouver craft beer week. I would call it more of an homage than an inferiority complex.

I'll try to check the place out soon and have a full report

i love portland craft, it's a thousand times better than the coppertank grill that was there before, the name doesn't bother me as Portland is (to me) synonymous with quality craft beer. Frankly with beer that good, it could be called anything and I wouldn't care

thanks to jon Stewart for this one.

I don't understand "Boston Pizza" name. It's not like Boston is known for great pizzas. Funny thing is, there is actually a restaurant called "Boston Market" which was founded in Massachusetts near Boston. When they opened restaurants in Canada, they got sued by Boston Pizza for using word "Boston."

Boston Pizza's original owner was a greek immigrant in Edmonton who was a big Bruins and Red Sox fan, during the original 6 era. I'm sure it had absolutely nothing to do with Canada's inferiority complex.
