Made one of these for pre-match. Used to have them when I lived at UBC for public drinking, worked all the time. Security let me through with it after I was done too!!

We have been handing out plastic cups which helped us pass two police officers on Wednesday without problem.

I had a copper point at me on Wednesday with my bright red cup in hand. I felt I would have been much more discreet with the can in my hand. But at the end of the day he didnt fine me or ask me to pour it out.
  • ...because you demonstrated respect by using a cup and "going through the motions" of TRYING to be discreet. I don't honestly think that anyone (Cops/Seniors/kids) think you are drinking anything OTHER than Beer in it, but you are showing responsibility by doing so.

I don't think many (if any) cops WANT to be the heavy and say you can't drink that here, pour it out or I'll cite/arrest you.

They do, however, have a job to do, which means if they saw someone walking with a Holstein tallboy they'd have to ask him to pour it out...

Cups = classy etiquette in a critical mass situation, and the cops won't be d-bags if you use cups and don't act like a drunken arse that they'd be better off dealing with than the rent-a-cops at the stadium.

Transparent plastic cup filled with vodka looks like water. Of course, drain that thing on the march and you won't make it into the stadium.

Happy to have a raucus in the north end also !!!!!   That way we can abuse the opposing team from both ends of the stadium during corners and throw ins,  and oh, yes, abuse the ref for bad calls; especially that Senior CRAP unholy Toledo !!!

  • HI guys , Im the one that wrote the comment on mls.com

North Gate Ultra's is NOT a hooligan group,

we call our selves ULTRAS because many of us are from the balkans (serbia, croatia, bosnia, macedonia, greece)

Any group that peacefully brings together croatians, serbs, bosnians, and macedonians is most definitely not a hooligan group.  In fact they should win some kind of peace prize.

IMO the ultras are so important in representing the caps and displaying how good the atmosphere is at empire, especially to the tv audience, seeing as the cameras never cut to the southside during the game (goal celebrations).

come on southside, come ultras, come on la doce
  • maybe we will consider joining you guys at oscar's soon enough even though were probly more suited for the plastic cup idea, were hoping to get about 100 ultras to the next game so you will definatly hear us:), any advice on how I can get my megaphone in?

Megaphones aren't allowed or the Southsiders would be using them. They're not allowed.  Bring it and it could be confiscated, or you could be tossed. An excerpt from the caps Match Day section:

I suggest talking to the club just say "we are a supporters group and want to use a megaphone to keep us organized can we get a special amendment to the rule" try that maybe can't hurt asking I would also let them know lots of supporter groups use them around the world, I think they're banned just because they don't want everyone bringing them.

Yes I did assume, but how much was it pursued? because I still think with the right arguments that they could be swayed to say yes, if you want I can email who ever needs to be emailed and ask them and show them examples why it would be benefiting the group and how it can be used in a positive way.

I sat on the north side for the New England game, they do a moderate amount of chanting, nothing too impressive. I heard them chant "We can't hear you Southsiders." Likely it was the other way around though. Also when the opposing goal keeper kicked the ball they'd shout "PUTA!" (Spanish: Whore) But hey, the more the merrier in my opinion.

I was in 218 and I could hear the "we can't hear you southsiders chant". It wasn't crystal clear, but it was certainly loud enough to hear across the pitch.
  • I'm one of the reps for the NGU. Namely, my job is to make sure everyone in our group is cheering and to call them out if they're not.

Come help us cheer if you don't think we're loud enough. :)
It's 100 of us versus the whole stadium and our 3rd game as a fan group. Help us grow. Less thinking and more cheering will get the stadium louder.

We shout PUTO. Again, us versus the whole stadium. For the New England game we had 35 people show up as most of us are either at school or at work during the week. If you're basing your opinion on that, you should realize for that particular game we had a less than average showing. So, your opinion is biased because you're not taking all the games into account. What did you think of the Chivas game?

They probably can't hear you either, I can hear you guys because I'm closer to you. You guys need a little more variety because every time you say "Southsiders we can't hear you," it's like you're running out of ideas.

I think your "I believe that we will win!" chant is really good, and somewhat refreshing.

I'm not sure what you mean by "versus the whole stadium." Chanting North Gate Ultras on the way out of the stadium is a bit over the top, but whatever floats your boat.

On the whole a good job and keep it up.
    =D>
  • All I'm referring to is that we're 100 members in a stadium of over 20,000 people. We realize that the whole stadium will not hear us all the time. So, we try to cheer when things quiet down at Empire Field since it is more effective.

We have a couple of songs. We came up with 2 more since the New England game and are constantly working to create something original.

It might be a bit over the top but it gets us noticed. Right now, we need exposure so that we can swell our numbers. Everyone who wants to cheer on the Whitecaps is welcome to join us in section 202 at Empire Field.

There aren't enough Japanese / Asian players in MLS.. Would like to see more.

That's because the J.League and K-League have better players and pay higher salaries.

Not to mention better match atmosphere with lots of away travelling support (although Japan and South Korea are helped by the fact that both are small, densely populated countries with excellent transport systems so it's easy for fans to follow their clubs).  I would also say the poor officiating in MLS would be another disincentive for Asian (as well as from elswhere) players from joining if Garber and Co. don't fix that issue soon instead of just sweeping it under the rug.
  • Well, Garber's recent excuse - that referees are appointed by the USSF, not by MLS - is technically correct.

He may be right about that, but with the clout/influence that he and the rest of the league have, I (and probably other footie fans) highly doubt it's too hard for the league to press (or at least work with) the USSF to improve the quality of officiating if both the league and USSF are serious about promoting the sport in North America.  Then again, as long as the season ticket/sponsorship/expansion fee $$$$ keeps coming in, it's just easier for the league to wash their hands clean of the whole issue than do anything about it :-S

"La Doce, in the southwest corner, are mostly Latino.  Pretty small group, though."

Small....yet immensely irritating. A buddy spotted me a ticket for the Chivas game next to this group. I noticed that a lot of people are rightly annoyed at the constant incongruous drumming and frankly irritating chanting ('supporting to you toniiiiiiiight'' we're gonna win') - it's enough to give you an aneurism.

I know its meant to replicate the South American experience, but crappy drum-driven beats ALL THE FUCKING TIME is a major headache.

We left at half-time and went to the Southside.

    "('supporting to you toniiiiiiiight''

This is actually a very good song, when sung with a lot of people and with a little more cohesion. It worked well for us last season when it was introduced, and quickly became a Southsider staple. Some songs are very wordy and don't translate well, but effort is effort.

Your complaint is very similar to that of last season.  Everyone liked it, but not next to them.  It's the same with the Caps drum group, which they have said will be moved around the stadium on a game to game basis (Thanks Arne).
    :-c
  • Ideally the drums should be located on a capo stand in front of the section, not right next to people.

But our club's front office won't even let us use a megaphone, let alone build capo stands.

This is going to take years (sigh).

  • ^ And I agree with Grandstander. "Supporting you toniiiiiiight" is actually called "Come on Vancouver", and it's a fantastic chant when done with critical mass.  It's based upon "Vamos Chilenos", and was sung in the Southside this past Saturday.  It's one of our staples, and will continue to be.

I don't mean to be difficult. And I think you're right that it needs a critical mass to work properly. But when the drums basically outweigh the vocal input then its really tough on the brain!

BTW was thinking again about this capo vs. watching game thing.

If some of the key chant initiators stood higher  in the stands(very common in Europe....) they would be able to initiate chants and see the game much better.

It's easier for a chant to be heard from above than that it has to travel upwards from below. Less effort from the vocal cords as well.

I reckon way more people will pick up the songs that way as well.

Just a thought but worth a go IMO.

Agree 100%.  IMO I believe we seriously need to consider this strategy.  I can easily here things from many rows behind me, but struggle to hear things that are only 2 in front.  Perhaps those who wanted to act as capos could stand in the aisles between 215 / 216 and 216/217 at about row dd.  The bonus is that they could have their eyes on the match at all times.

Your not being difficult.  In the home opener, Bad Gones and myself tried a couple times to start songs in our section only to be drowned out by the Caps drum group.  This was an issue before this year.  Drums are great, but placement and timing are the keys.
  • Could someone from the southsiders organizers message me please. I have something to discuss. Cheers.
