American Bitters are certainly hoppy, a British style bitter can be and often are more balanced. British hops are more mellow than their 'merican cousins
Lighthouse dark chocolate porter is out. Not sure if it will make it out to many Vancouver shops.
Not a big fan of Lighthouse (their stout is watery shite, IMHO), but I might give this a try.
Red Racer or anything by Driftwood.
Okay, so despite our reputation, apparently we don't, as a group, love drinking beer. Who would have thought? It means that we still have a few tickets to the March 25 beer-tasting session ($20 gets you beer-tasting plus a $20 gift card).

Very excited about this. Speaking of new breweries has anyone tried Coal Harbours Rye Ale?

Nice. Are they only on tap, or do they do bottles as well?
Devon, Is that anything to do with the 49th Parallel Coffee folk?
ETA: Never mind. It doesn't. Rather, St. Augustine's is involved.

My mate did the label designs for that brewery and did up that 'Coming Soon' poster, I'm pretty excited about getting the chance to taste.

Right now I beleive it is only on tap, but apparetly they've got a huge capacity and all going well bottles or cans soon.

not quick enough!
I'm confused. I thought our liquor laws prevented breweries from owning pubs unless they are classed as 'brew pubs'?
Another new one: Townsite Brewing (Powell River), who do a porter:

St Augustines is a restaurant, so maybe a difference there? also it 49th operates on a different site, under a different name. i just know st augustines can't sell 49th P beer.

Really excited about trying their beers too! they just started brewing this/last week so shouldn't have to wait too long.
While not quite my favourite Canadian beer, Philips Amnesiac Double IPA is growing on me. It's tasty and its 8.5% alcohol volume is one of its many endearing qualities.
I am not looking forward to the Watermelon Wit. Ugh.
Brenton said: I am not looking forward to the Watermelon Wit. Ugh.
No but hopefully the Classic Ale will be good. From my understanding they are going to have one or two standards but then producing mainly seasonal and specialty beers so always something new to try.
Yah, looking forward to the Classic and Red Ale.
There's also a brewery opening at 6th and Scotia, right by the Whip, in the big yellow building. I've only seen zoning notices so far, no other info.

Looking farther ahead, the owners of the Cascade Room and Habit who also own the Main Street Pilsner brand (currently brewed under contract for them by Russell) have plans to open Main Street Brewing in the heritage Brewery Garage building at East 7th and Scotia in the heart of the historic Brewery Creek neighbourhood.
A good article about all that's happening here in Vancouver http://vancouver.openfile.ca/vancouver/text/its-going-be-big-year-craft-beer
Ah, thanks. That is a great article. Of note as well, the old Lido store/weird space on Broadway between Fraser and Main is trying to open as a pub featuring craft beers.
Great to hear about all the new breweries/craft brew pubs. The Vancouver beer scene has improved by orders of magnitude in the last few years and it seems to be just getting started.
Also, for you malt heads out there, I had the Mt Begbie Dunkel the other night, it may satisfy your cravings.
It's on the sweet side, a big 8% malty beer will be though. I liked it, went well with my shepherd's pie (for pi day) last nite.
Really enjoying the Propeller Bitter, from Halifax. I'm a big fan of Propeller, and wish we could get more of their product here.
Sean Heather (of Irish Heather, Shebeen, Salt, and Judas Goat) has opened Bitter at 16 West Hastings (across the street from Pigeon Park). Lots of bottles and eight rotating taps, including the R&B milk stout, which is brewed exclusively for Bitter.
And they told me they actually have a bitter on tap now.
I know it's not Canadian but picked up six Rogue Dead Man Ale. Really, really nice. and suprisingly for a NW brew not at all hoppy. Really well balanced.
I've been meaning to get out to Bitter for quite awhile now. I've never tried a milk stout before and Im really interested in seeing what its all about.
The milk stout is very good. Thicker (texture-wise) than Guinness, a tad sweet while remaining quite balanced, slightly nutty flavour.
I have a bottle of the Driftwood Crooked Coast Altbier in the fridge. Sounds intriguing, and I'm surprised I haven't had it yet:
Inspired by the original Alt-style beer of Dusseldorf, Crooked Coast brings together the aromas of German noble hops and Munich malt. Delicate malt-hop balance is the defining trait of this quintessential session beer!
EDIT: Initial reports are very favourable. Nicely hopped, still well balanced, though I find myself wishing it were a tad lighter or heavier.
I might of missed it, but I haven't seen Russell's Nectar of the Gods discussed here. Just picked one up this evening...
^Hopefully Milk Stout gets a following in the west. I miss it and I'm going to keep mentioning until it happens. :-P

I've got one waiting in the fridge as well.

I was pretty impressed. The whiskey aging made it taste a bit like a sour to me.
I like most of the Okanagan Spring stuff, especially the Porter and the Brewmasters. The latter of which is a very dark lager; the taste of a stout, but with the lightness of a lager. Well worth a look, and one of my favourite beers. There's not many places that sell it on draft, but I know the Greedy Pig in Gastown had it on last time I went (in January).
Another one to look out for is the Herminator (sp?). Its a seasonal beer thats usually released around Christmas time. Its 9.5%, and a very dark beer. Absolutely superb. Vancouver Island Brewery I believe.
VIB has The Merminator in their tasting pack that is still in BCLs.

I'm not a big Okanagan Spring fan, but I do enjoy their porter. A great "session porter".
Tried the Skagit Bitter at St. Augustine's yesterday, excellent stuff. 90% of their barrel left when I ordered it, should be some there for a while.
have any of you guys tried hoyne brewing's (Victoria) stuff? i had their pale ale and their pilsner, top notch.
This thread has legs!!

Never heard of them. Do they just do local? Kegs only?
Hoyne's is a new brewery just set up in Victoria, I believe Hoyne was involved in setting up Swans and another Victoria brewery. http://hoynebrewing.ca/
It's reading stuff like this that makes my recent diagnosis of Celiac disease all the more painful. You bastards. Enjoy your gluten-rific beer. :((

Shitty, dude. I used to work at a store that specialized in GF foods, and a few people in my family have celiac. Let me know if you need any tips.
There are two gluten-free beers available in BC. I've tried one, and it was okay. Too bad, yo. I had a friend that was well into a career as a baker, and she was diagnosed. Talk about enforced career change.

I think there's a gluten-free shop on Arbutus, around West 14th Avenue. Walked by it a few times.
Hoyne himself set up swans AND was the brewmaster at Canoe, but now he's off doing his own thing in the newly-christened brewery district. kegs have just been released to a few places in the victoria (the beagle, for one) and i just spotted 650 ml bottles at my local private store here in van
