I really resent the choice of Budweiser as a beer to be served in the stadium especially when the alternatives are also so poor. As a member of the Vancouver Homebrewers Association and CAMRA (Campaign for real ale) I still understand the value that corporate sponsorship holds for the Whitecaps but I deplore the beer selection. I wish there was a way to have Bud for people who want it (note Budweiser is one of those crap "beers' mass produced with loads of adjuncts and corn instead of grain that tastes better cold because it has virtually no taste....a real beer gets better as it warms) like some local Craft brews like the Russell Southsiders Ale that we can get at Doolins....sure it's a marketing strategy but it might be a workable alternative....as for Keiths IPA, a member previously stated it is an IPA in name only. There is virtually no noticeable, natural Hops taste or aroma. For me, the unfortunate side-effect of joining Van Homebrewers and CAMRA is that I find the beer served at BC PLace pretty much intolerable.

Obviously there's limits (I'm not going to get Driftwood Fat Tug IPA) but if you had a choice of something besides Budweiser is there anything you'd prefer?
Look at all the Beers that are in the InBev (Budweiser) family.

Some Alexander Keith's and Stella would be welcome in my cup :)

I don't even bother getting a beer at the game, although apparently they have Leffe which I've enjoyed in the summertime. I'm saving up to afford one next time.
If you had a choice of a different Budweiser owned beer is there any you'd want? Bearing in mind the option is Budweiser.

Any response yet?
A couple of years ago, before the Caps moved to BCPlace, Pavco had a contract with Russell. They sold both Russell and Bud. They had one kiosk that we knew of that sold a variety of Russell products, which are pretty nice. It's not quite a mono-culture now, but pretty close. Stanley Park is there, so is Keiths. Empire had Sleemans for a while. Clearly there is opportunity. I would like to see Russell's, they have a nice selection.

You expect a response this quick? You have better chances of getting that stout sometime this season. ;)
Would a person chose the 30 min line up for a alternative beer or front of the line for a bud?
They could still sell lots of Bud, just make it the house brand for something like $6 a piece, $7 for Keiths and say $8 for a Stella or a Driftwood Fat Pig or whatever.

Variety is gonna be tough enough to get but I wouldn't hold my breath for a drop in price.
Unless people just stop buying beer altogether I can see a shot glass for $10 within the decade.
I try to avoid stadium prices; but if I was desperate for a beer, I would drink a Leffe (especially a triple or a brown), and possibly a Hoegaarden on a very hot day.

At Swanguard you could go front of the line and get Guiness.
If you haven't already watched it, watch a documentary film called "Beer Wars" and you will see why Bud is sold so close to the southsiders. Most likely they either have dibs on placement location being a sponsor or they pay for it.

we all know why Budweiser is - almost - the only beer sold in the stadium, dumping that much money in the club gives you some say on how and what to sell http://www.sportspromedia.com/news/budweiser_partners_with_whitecaps_in_seven-figure_deal/
I've not seen Leffe sold there, what section is near? Might be worth the extra $ :((
piltdownman said: ... Or falling :)
The sky is always falling on these boards... I blame Tom Soehn.
Didn't know they sold Leffe...I would drink that if I could find it. Other plausible and drinkable alternatives would be (in descending order of probability (support local) Granville Island (even if they are owned by Sleeman's) Russell's, Driftwood would be awesome but a stretch, or a brewery that is about to be launched in East Van "Parallel 49" Obviously sponsorship money is the issue but it'd be a magnanimous gesture of Whitecaps/Bud if they'd allow more palatable alternatives. And to the person who asked if comparatively it'd be worth standing longer in a line to get a craft beer vs a quick run through to get Bud....It's seriously not worth the saved time to drink the cornwater flavoured garbage Budweiser produces.
I can't help drawing parallels between this thread and the "fan activism" I'm seeing unfold on my twitter feed.
Fans at SWFC (led by the 6ft Owl mascot "Ozzie Owl") have just been successful in getting local delicacy Hendersons relish provided at the conscession at Hillsborough stadium.
Reasons for success?
- Use of humour.
- Local pride in a local product.
- Easy-to-back Twitter campaign.
I can't see that Spike mascot leading a beer campaign on twitter but a catchy hashtag might help.

Granville Island is owned by Molson Coors. Sleeman's is owned by Sapporo.
It's your lucky day...my manager has asked me to ask you what type of beer that you'd like to have (as long as it meets the terms of the contract). He says that if I can make a case he'll try and get it in.

Somebody else did a bit of the way up. Sorry, I'm typing on my blackberry and that would be very difficult.

This one. Also, our current beers are: stella, bud, bud light, keith's ipa, keith's red, kokanee, stanley park pilsner, and stanly park amber.

Is that the full list of available beers? Or is there a list of other beers your manager could get?

Leffe and Hoegaarden.
Please pass along our thanks, and here's hoping it works out.

Are you saying he can bring in a beer that isn't in BC Place at this time or move an existing beer to the Soutsiders end?
Both

What outside beers fall within the the contractual guidelines?
Hoegaarden in the summer please! And BECKS, LowenBrau and Franziskaner but you already have Stella, so that's not happening.
Could you bring in St. Pauli girl just for the label? ;)

So Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Stout is a go? It's on the list and would be a great addition. See if you can get that one.

The big problem Wendy, is they are not sold at all the locations. Unless you walk the entire circle of the concourse you have no idea where this stuff is. For example, I might want a Keith's IPA but no clue where it is. Can you guys make a food and beverage "map" that can be posted throughout the concourse? I would like to have an instant reference on where to go for the various food and beer choices
From that list, my personal interests would be Hoegaarden, Franziskaner, and Leffe. I doubt your boss would get Goose Island beer though. But if it's available, how about a 2011 King Henry to go with the Bourbon Coffee Stout, lol?
Goose Island would be tremendous. Hoegaarden would be good but Bass, Becks, Boddingtons, Leffe, St. Pauli Girl for the label and the St Pauli tie might be fun, & Staropramen. I think any of these would be an improvement over the current overings. I think that's wonderful news they are willing to look at other options for us. Thanks Wendy.

I will bring it up, but just for future reference, Keith's IPA is available at the pizza stand at 220, and the beer stands (not portables) at 234, 240, 219 (there are others but I don't have them memorized). It is also currently available in draft form at the hotdog stands (but won't be for the entire season). Keith's Red Amber will be moving into all food service permanent stands. In the foodcourt the hotdog stand has everything.
I just wanted to vote for Leffe, Hoegarden, Stanley Park Amber being more widely available. I also think a map would be good!
Leffe and Hoegaarden.
I'd like to vote for Bass, Leffe, Hoegaarden. I suppose there's no chance of having the option of at least one local craft beer available, oustide what's available from inBev?
My vote would be Hoegaarden, Leffe, and Spaten Oktoberfestbier.
Leffe, Hoegaarden, Bass, Boddingtons would be fan-freaking-tastic. The option of a stout would wipes up drool make me soooo happy wipes up drool
Yeah, didn't see Boddingtons at first - that would be great, too.
Honestly, the beer selection is actually pretty good. The availability of the wider selection of beers around the concourse is what is needing most improvement.
wow - this entire conversation re: beer? Sometimes ignorance is bliss - I drink what is available and don't complain.

Yay, someone to drink the Bud and leave the good stuff to those of us with taste buds! LOL... ;) In all seriousness, I complain when I have to pay $8.00 for a sippy cup of goat piss.

It's not like this is new information.
I don't drink bud... I had the Stanley Park one and it tasted like beer. No complaints. Agreed that they could make them a tiny bit bigger

Just having a laff with you, hope you didn't take it the wrong way. And we just wouldn't be card-carrying Canadians if we didn't go on and on and on about beer.

They have an exclusive contract with the stadium. The contract was previously held by Russell and before that Molson
While having more choices would be great I can't see any pressure from us, other fans or protesters-for-hire having any effect. Budweiser payed big money to be the beer vendor for the stadium. I know that Labatts distributes Bud (at least they did when I went to beer school...it's an actual thing, honest), and Leffe, Becks, etc, etc but I don't see them wanting to reduce Bud taps to make way for other product under the Labatts umbrella...if they did then Labatts would be the beer partner and NOT Budweiser.
I also believe that BC Place servers are part of a union. Their union contract may limit the number of serving staff on match days and may dictate how many taps/stations are operational at one time. Has anyone looked into that???
Money trumps fan opinion. See Uniglobe and other recent examples for proof. While I agree that the beer choice are crap at BC Place, I can't see how it is going to change. Your energies would be better spent on other things than bashing your head against this corporate brick wall.
