The Eternal Optimist
  • To counter-balance some of the more negative comments on here, I'd like to offer a different view of things.

    1. I believe we will win wednesday, spurred on by a glorious goal by Hassli.

    2. I feel the Whitecaps will slowly get better as the season progesses. The playoffs are a long-shot now but not impossible.

    3. Tommy Soehn will finally get it right and we will get our first away win at San Joe, (which i will witness in person.)

    4. We will get a big signing soon, possibly Shevchenko.

    5. Whitecaps will see a slight dip in season ticket sales next year, but still stay strong overall.

Here is my cheery outlook on things, thank you for reading.

And I thought my optimism was delusional .... You make me feel so normal. Remind me to buy you a beer if we ever meet  :)

#3 ) Tommy Soehn will trip and break a leg. An interim coach to the interim coach will take over and the team will rally to take full points from all home games and 50% of all road games while Tommy is not coaching.

You know the Whitecaps situation is not at all similar but in many ways very similar to the enforced European hiatus that English clubs suffered in 1985.

When they came back from the enforced break it took them years to catch up.  I can remember watching Norwich City V Inter Milan.  Worlds apart.  Top English clubs were a country mile away from any kind or cup or performance.  It took seasons to get back.

Its all about expectation.  We have to catch up to teams that have been competing at this level for years.  It will take time.  Ups and downs of a football fan.  Ask any of your Man Utd fans if they have experienced any of what we are feeling now.

Its easy to support Man Utd/Barca/Inter, but it aint easy to be a Whitecaps fan.

But its what makes us great as well........because there will be great days and they will be all the sweeter for this, I promise you that.
  • We've been mostly competitive all year. The results have been extremely tough to achieve.

Sometimes it's a lack of offense, other times it's been dodgy defending. Of course we've had questionable managerial decisions too. Goalkeeping has let us down a few times. We get results when we're good in at least 3 of these areas but cannot blame the season so far on any one .

Only twice have we lost by more than a goal and never by more than 2. They just have to keep working hard and not give up on each other. Hard to do given the results but they are more than capable of winning the next 2. It's amazing what can happen to a team with a win or 2. New life, new confidence, new found strength.

Hopefully they can look to the South end of Empire for inspiration. We have to do our part to give them the lift they need to get it going on Wednesday.

The "doom and gloom" is also 500+ passionate supporters standing behind the net yelling and singing for a full 90. I'm in my 40's; when I get home my knees are sore from bouncing, my shirt is drenched in sweat, my throat is sore from singing so loud, my shoulder is sore from waving a flag, I usually have a pounding headache from yelling, and my heart is either aching or full of joy. An opinion that varies from yours isn't wrong nor doom and gloom. I'm pretty sure if I played Keeper for the Caps people would have a pretty negative opinion of my skill. Just because you ignore the shit on your shoe, others can still smell it.

Buddy was one of the biggest Tietur Haters, he has a position to defend having told all that would read endless rants culminating how Tommy Soehn would just tweak the lineup and formation and all would be well.

so many doom and gloom threads right now i thought i would keep the positives in here.

we have 9 league games left at home, looking at the opposition i reckon we should be able to get a few more wins.
in no particular order we have still have home games against

    columbus
    chicago
    houston
    d.c. utd
    colorado
    portland
    seattle
    real salt lake
    l.a. galaxy

reckon we could get 10 to 12 points from those first 6 on the list.
just 1 away win and a draw and we could end up with close to 30 pts.
i' m sure most would consider that acceptable in our first season

Knew it was too good to be true......so he's just an "Eternal (since Soehn took over) optimist"?

    Hello

With the crumbling of team chemistry under Soehn; I would not expect to see more than one or two wins for  the rest of the year. Sad, but this is what we are faced with.

    Hello

If you wish to support Soehn and call anyone who posts the truth about him to be "shite"; that is something you have to live with.

I support the whitecaps mate, not individuals, like a proper fan. However, Soehn isn't as bad as you make him out.

Gotta be optimistic for the future of the club, despite current form and results.

In MLS now, which is as high as you can play in NA. Got decent TV coverage, a bigger budget, and a growing fan base (yes I think it is growing since people outside of Vancouver can now closely follow the team).

This season has not been great results-wise, but I'm so glad to have a local, top tier professional soccer team to support. And we can only get better.

Besides, being pessimistic and negative is bad for your health and makes people dislike you.

Soehn may not be as bad as I think he is but he is no where near as good as he thought he was!

Lets hope for some wins to get us through the season and if they put TS back in the FO I'm fine with that, but I don't want him back as coach.

Doubt he'll be coach next year regardless. And certainly not if things don't improve drastically on the field.

There is the rumour that he has lost the dressing room, not sure if there is any truth in that, but it did look like a lot of players simply gave up on Saturday.

I think there's reason to be optimistic.

We've been competitive in all but two or three matches.

I'm not a big fan of Tommy Soehn but I think the gameplan of attacking with a more possession, short passing game is a much better approach than long ball hoof and chase.

Highlights have been Hassli, Camilo (punching above his weight but I think he may improve) Chiumiento (should get even better with time and chemistry) Rochat, Koffie (the most consistent, solid player we have)

On the other hand Dunfield and salinas have been big disappointments. i wouldn't give up on them but they need to be coached on ball control/possession and how to hang onto the ball. Both give the ball away a lot.
Another concern related to injuries is the lack of consistent defensive lineup. It seems Demerit's injury is affecting him even when he plays. If he could get fit and a consistent, solid performed could be founf to patner him, we might not leak as many goals when we have leads.

One question....what;s this talk of a Shevchenko rumour? any substance to it?

    Speaking optimistically...

Our best winger is eighteen years old. Our best central midfielder is nineteen. Our most expensive player is one of the league's best all-round forwards. Our captain is an ace central defender who could start for any team he wanted. Every one of those four players I just listed puts in a consistent effort and is never willing to let the team lose.

The city is filled with fans like us who care enough about the Whitecaps to be angry instead of writing them off. Attendance will go down in 2012. There won't be sell-outs in BC Place. But there'll be sustainable excitement. There'll be atmosphere. There'll be the Whitecaps realizing what a core of die-hard fans and supporters means to a team.

Tom Soehn will probably be out of harm's way by 2012.
