I'll check with a couple of Seattle STHs I know down here, to see if a) there is anything on their tickets indicating you could be removed, and b) whether there are actually away fans in colors on a regular basis in 'normal' sections.

  • ^ Yeah, in the "home" sections. Away fans there risk getting the punt.  That's a long way to travel and a lot of money to spend to risk getting ejected...

I never did my away section tickets from the 500 allocated (waited too late!), but I still intend on going and sitting in the "home" section. I understand I risk getting kicked out, but I'm curious on how they're mandating that. Will they eject me if they see me wearing a Whitecaps shirt/scarf? What if I'm not wearing any Whitecaps gear, but I stand up and clap when the Caps score?

I'm not stupid; I don't plan to start any cheers or sing any Whitecaps songs in the Sounders sections. I just want to sit quietly and cheer when my team scores. I wonder if anyone knows how stringent security will be with this.

And I'm sure there are hundreds of people who will be taking this same risk.

I am going with same intentions as you.  Cant see there being any problems.
  • Seattle away tickets are to be picked up at the May 11 or May 28 Whitecaps matches at Empire:

    Dear Whitecaps Season Ticket Holders,

Thank you for purchasing tickets to the Whitecaps FC at Seattle Sounders match on Saturday June 11, 2011. We are currently working with Whitecaps FC on the distribution process for tickets, and our goal is to have them ready for pick up at one of the Whitecaps home matches at Empire Field - either on May 11 or 28. Once we have finalized the location and pick up time, we will send you specific details via email. If you are not attending either of these matches, we will make alternate arrangements to ensure you receive your tickets.

As a reminder, everyone crossing the border into the U.S. must have a valid passport.

The only away fans I've seen in normal sections have been families/friends of players on the away team.  George John's family sits a few rows back from me, for example.  And the only time I hear anything from them is when he's introduced and when Dallas scores.

Here's the legalese on the back of the ticket (I highlighted the relevant section):

Mind, according to that, unless you're disorderly, they have to give you a refund. I doubt they'd be quick to pull the trigger on that.

The one response I've received said that nearly every game there's a couple people nearby with opposition shirts on, and there's never really been any incident. One of them was, like you mention, families - it was the Gjertsen lot - apparently it was the only time there's been much banter back-and-forth, and even that was pretty good natured.  I seem to recall some problems with them in Montreal games at Swangard.

I'm kinda in the same boat.  Will need 2 seats on the bus, maybe 4, but nothing 100% due to work/personal commitments.  Hope to have it sorted once I wave hard tickets in their faces and by this weekend.

Same question.  not all who buy a seat on the bus need to be SS?

In case anyone's worried about getting kicked out while sitting outside of the away supporters section, I sent an email somewhat recently to someone in the ticketing office at Seattle. The reply stated that there's no chance we would be removed unless we gave them reason to remove us.
  • For those who picked up their Seattle away tickets at the Uniglobe tent tonight, did you read the accompanying letter from the Whitecaps?  No inflatables allowed at Qwest!

Did people who picked up their tickets from Uniglobe read the 'instructions" from the club?

"All visiting supporters must meet at the North East access ramp of Qwest Field no later than 5.30pm"

"escorted by security to our sections"

"....supporters arriving later than 5.30pm may be denied entry into the stadium"

"have to remain for 20 mins after the end of the game...and then escorted out"

Wow.....do they think we are Millwall?

The would be fools to not serve 500 visitors.  I don't know about you guys, but I easily down 6 beers per match.  Say the average will drink 4 beers, and at 500 fans, were talking 2000 beers at the minimum.  And if we have to be there two hours ahead of time, I'm guessing we'll be talking 4000 to 6000 beers consumed.

Most of the precautions are because the Seattle FO is VERY nervous about the TA visit on Saturday.

While I doubt I'm going to chance it, I wouldn't be at all surprised if some of the enforcement for us is a little more lax, especially if their fears about Portland aren't realized.

The Sounders FO were pretty adamant that away supporters have to enter the stadium before gates open. We were told that anyone that shows up late will NOT be allowed into the stadium.  When asked about border delay's their response was that we better factor that in to our departure time because that is not their problem.  I would strongly urge everyone to show up when told to otherwise it is extremely likely you will be watching the match from the bar across the street.

they are not going to have a few hundred pissed off vancouver fans wondering around the stadium because they didn't turn up two hours before! If safety is REALLY their concern they'd let those fans in to avoid any confrontation anyway

My guess is the Seattle FO are already slightly pissed off that some Vancouver fans are ignoring the 'Must arrive via bus" rule.  I personally wouldn't want to test them.

For comparison Portland is following the rules and everyone will arrive at the stadium via bus.  Even people who are local to Seattle are required to meet up at a secret location on the outskirts of town to be bused to the stadium. This was all part of the rules that the Seattle FO had demanded, but Uniglobe has somewhat ignored.

I cannot stress enough to you guys how seriously you need to take these rules that Seattle is insisting on.

Brett and I have sat down in a face to face meeting with staff from the FO's in Seattle and Portland.

There is absolutely no wiggle room here. Seattle's FO is not fucking around.  They are absolutely convinced there is a high risk for a violent incident in the works by allowing us in

They never wanted us in there to begin with, remember? Originally they were only willing to sell 150 seats.

If the instructions from Seattle says "be there at X o'clock" you had damn well better be where you are supposed to be because they will have no problem telling you to take a hike.

Is Drew Carey still actively involved? Maybe some of his ideas were goofy, but Carey's schtick was all about fan involvement and passion.  If he is, then AFTER this has passed, and after we've demonstrated we know how to act and aren't a threat, somebody, perhaps the board, should direct something to Carey, and point out that there's really no solid reason to treat away fans like diseased cattle.  It isn't going to strike a cord with Roth or Hannauer, but it might with Carey.

    @MooseManiac

What has changed is, quite simply, a bad case of hooligan hysteria by people who do not truly understand supporters generally, and Cascadia supporters specifically.

Case in point:  Seattle owner Joe Roth insisting that Vancouver & Portland's away seats at Qwest must be capped at 150 maximum or else (paraphrasing here) "I don't want America's first soccer riot to breakout in the streets of Seattle."

Another: MLS commisioner Don Garber met with the Timbers Army in the preseason for a Q&A session and was quite open about the fact that he doesn't understand why we would want to travel. He questioned why we would all complain about 150 seats, and whether they thought 300 would be sufficient. He was nearly laughed off the stage - Portland was already sending 800 up the I-5 for US Open Cup matches as a USL club.

Another Garber gem from that Portland Q&A (paraphrasing again): "My two biggest fears are 1) violence in the stands and 2) a terrorist attack in our stadiums."

The TA are doing everything by the book, we are not.

The "secret" location Brett is referring to that Portland fans are meeting in Seattle to be picked up by bus is actually Tukwila, Yes...a destination 15 mins away from Qwest. Why?, because as I said they are following the rules....we are not. They have a total of 10 buses, and absolutely no one from Portland is travelling independently.

If, we fuck it up, by some people being late who have travelled independently, ie not in one of the organised buses, and we upset Seattle, you can bet that we will not get 500 tickets for Seattle again.

That may also mean that we set the precedent for Cascadia Cup matches and Seattle may look at our lack of following protocol and decide not to give Portland 500 tickets in the future as well, as they are looking at any excuse not to.

Do we want to upset the TA as well?

My strongest advise to everyone, is to abandon any ideas or plans you have to travel independently and let's do this properly and everyone travel to the match on buses as Seattle have requested.

If people want to travel independently over the border, fine, but meet at somewhere like Lynnwood or Seattle Premium Outlets, and we will arrange for a local bus to take you in and out of Qwest.

problem with that chris is we are staying overnite and have booked hotel.i wonder how many others have done the same. how many bus seats have the southsiders sold?
that will give an indication of how many are travelling independently. personally know of quite a few that are going with tickets bought in seattle sections also

Chris, in my gut I have problems with that idea, but setting that aside ... I don't see how you can even get word out for that concept given the tickets were offered to all season-ticket holders, not just Southsiders. (If the board has contact info for everyone who bought - I stand corrected.)

I'm sure that is what is happening with the TA fans being picked up at Tukwila, There must be many fans staying in Seattle for the weekend.

Although I feel like this is my problem, it isn't really, its our FO who has created the problem by ignoring the rules and selling the tickets to one of their sponsors (Uniglobe) to distribute.

If it all goes "tits up" and we don't get tickets for  future Cascadia matches, please remember that this isn't my fault but Roberto Cabrones'
