From being up at the back of 215 we have a number of STH who are joining in and getting chants going However from looking down and across 216/217 most of the chants are coming from the very front of those sections and they end up getting lost in the middle often around the stairwells. So by the time it gets to us or we can make it out, you guys at the front are almost finished or a good way through the song.

IMO it would be better to have more SSers higher up the stands to help the chants and to project the noise forward, making it easier for new SSers/ non STH's /casuals to hear the chants and join in, rather than the words being projected forward from the very front of the stand.

Anyways thats my two cents for this, things are getting better and more cohesive and happy to do what I can to help at the back of 215

Holte, for the Dallas game ask if any of these STH (any 2 of them) if they'd consider swapping seats down closer to the "action". I'm willing to move up top and help you out for the game getting more of your section inline with our chants. (and know Sslamo has suggested he wouldn't be adverse to moving but he may be tied up in chant leader duties on the rail *chuckles* )
Think this kind of swapping can really help benefit getting people educated in our section (and for that matter other sections). Move folks who are eager to learn our songs into sections with good chanters while moving more vocal Southsiders into their seats on a one game basis (more if their keen).
Problem of course may be we weaken our current location, so this may
have to wait till we have things completely sorted down below. But keep this in mind and see what their reaction to this idea is for future reference...

^Thats is somewhat untrue. You do get a say.  But that 'say' is only 1 out of what is now 550.  Your membership does get you a vote in the AGM, and allows you to run for one of the board positions.  While we don't hold a referendum on every topic, at the AGM we had two last year and at the Lamplighter we held a opinion poll. I, and I hope the other board members, try to listen to members.  Does that mean I follow everything people suggest?  Not at all ... But I try to get the will of the mass and openly adopt ideas that I think are good. For example the walkie talkies which are on order, the 'V's and the upcoming Colour Cards.

Where did I mention, that someone didn't get a say?  Nothing I said was untrue, "somewhat" or otherwise.  You just added more info. Thank you for that.

Grandstander, I could be wrong here, but Brett types really slow. I think he was actually responding to a post a couple above yours but took a while to write out his thoughts. I think that it's aimed at the $30 comment.

  • how about using our scarves as a signal? have three or four chants with different actions, so we have visual cues?

Boundary Rd - Scarves up, like usual.

St Pauli Chant - swing scarves in the air in one hand

We're Blue, We're White- punch the air with one hand

    etc....

concentrate on three or four each match and teach them to the guys in the bar, with appropriate scarf or hand actions as well.

I think Vindaloo is one to use, as its basically one word over and over.

Looks like we are assigning chant leaders for the next game. I'm not sure if we'll have the colored cards ready by that time but just to let everyone know I will be bringing my tom drum again and I will try to introduce new short chants that involve the drum, clapping and maybe a word or two like Vancouver or Whitecaps by the end of the chant. Maybe practice those at Oscars.
  • United Supporters do sing that song, 'United Roads' is a staple in
the Stretford End, and at the Trafford Pub before the game. I think its
good to have a 'song' as well as all the chants. If people are
embarrassed about holding a tune, they should probably realize there are
thousands of people around them singing.

I was being harsh to be honest, its not criticism as any chanting is
good. BUT! and here's were I get bombed off the forum....Boundary Rd!
It's an Awful, awful football song, its not a dig at you guys and I know
for sure I'm in the minority on it. But there is a huge, massive
difference between singing and chanting. Football fans want to chant,
not sing something like boundary rd. You've seen the tape from the
Lamplighter, it sounds fuckin awful! Even Man Utd fans don't sing it and
    it's 'their song'!

For now print your own and a few extra for friends.  If this improves things we will do a full rollout for the next match.

The official stance is that we should be getting the clubs approval to hand out forms.

    FYI EVERYBODY!
I have printed 100 copies of the chant/song color card sheet that Brett has so nicely put together. I'll be printing at least 100 more by Friday and will be at Oscar's to hand them out.
If anyone has any questions or if any chant leaders want to get in touch with me then please PM me.

They were there (and working) in the first half, and we sounded great by all accounts. Then they were inexplicably (so far) not there in the second half, and we couldn't be heard again. Anyone know why?

I had the cards in the second half and I was trying. I did not like having them myself. Digging out cards  to wave up and down. It was irritating for me and I will not do it again.  I have to say I did not think the card thing worked very well. No one in my section wanted to slow down or stop watching the game to figure out what song was being sung. IMO we were just as good with or with out the cards.  A whole bunch of times I would pick a tune alert the other section they would try and figure out what I had chosen and by then another chant had started. Basically very confusing. So at times I just stopped worrying as no one else was following anyways.

We have also had complaints regarding the drums. Many people like the drums when they lead the whole group but many times yesterday, according to a few on the eastern edge of 217, the drums seemed to overpower chants that were starting in other sections. We may need to allow times when the drums are not pounding away so everyone can hear the chants and learn the words. By the way, no offense meant to the drummers, but if we can not hear the words its impossible to sing.

Yeah I was east in 216 and it was pretty regular that we'd get drowned out by St Pauli and the drums because nobody could hear us.

Try sitting in section 207 and competing with the club's Drum Cafe.  I'll be sending another letter to the FO.  Completely ridiculous that we have to endure them EVERY game.  They don't seem to be moving anymore (so remember that Southside next time you say the FO doesn't listen to you) and they drown out any chance we have to start any chanting/singin.

^ But for the few moments we weren't being forced to listen to the drums in the first half, we could hear you much better than in previous games.  Could tell that a lot more people were taking part and it looked much more cohesive.

@Hammer: Possibly a combination of walkie-talkies and megaphones will work better than the cards in the future?

I think the cards worked well Hammer. In all honesty when we saw them in the first half we had to figure it out quickly but we got it going. When it stopped it became less cohesive. If we keep at it everyone will learn the signals better and it will only improve. Yesterday was a good start, but it was just a start.
