How is it that we have a roster of 26 (I think that is correct) and we have only Harvey and Miller to come off the bench. If we have absolutely no faith in others, why do we carry them. Are they developing? Are we moving towards using them?
If Rennie chooses to follow this current route, I predict the squad burning out OR falling apart due to an injury.
I hate to say it, but thank goodness we did not make CCL, we do not have the squad depth (or refuse to use it) for the extended schedule.
Fingers crossed, but I am worried.
GoF said: I didn't want to mention the name as a courtesy to my source who asked me not to just yet, as what I don't know for sure is whether the deal is dead or not.
Brilliant, thanks for the clarification. I was confused as to reason for withholding the name, vis a vis the potential for them reopening talks....but if your source specifically asked you to not divulge it that's obviously a worthy reason in and of itself.
On that same note, can you speak to the choice to not divulge the name of the Brazilian player?......is it again because the source asked you to not release it, or is it out of respect for the club and allowing them to make the announcement?
Tartar?

Caps were trying to get a striker, midfielder and centreback.
I mixed up the nationality of the CM and CB, which caused the initial confusion.
Deals fell through as they simply couldn't be done in time before the transfer window closed. Not quite sure how that affected the Carew deal as he is a free agent, so I'm guessing that had more to do with personal terms.
Rico said: If we sign him, Peter Schaad will be pretty excited, former Villa man.
I think both Pete and myself don't want that lazy player (John Carew) anywhere near the Whitecaps. Thank god talks broke down.
Carew is a useless waste of space - petulant and unreliable.

Are you suggesting a Norwegian is lazy? Those sir, are fighting words. Lutefisk at 50 paces.
(_The only reason I follow Carew at all is because he's Norwegian. Know nothing at all about his abilities or apparent lack thereof_)
I rather like John Carew, but where exactly does he fit in? Isn't that the same spot Mattocks and Miller both already play?
Rico said: Holy shit my bad, haven't followed this guy's career much, other than knew he was a flop at Roma sorry to offend lol
I think he was good about a decade ago.

Marginally really, on the brink mostly but always falling short for some reason or another.
To be quite honest, it would be like signing an Eric Hassli type player that falls desperately short of the charismatic and lovable dude Eric was.

... but being Norwegian makes up for all of that! Right? Right? Anyone ... ?
Rico said: I hear this Brazilian Midfielder is looking for a new team, lol. Hmmnn AC Milan? Redbulls? Whitecaps? Where is Vancouver?
Ah KAKA, such a mercenary... I remember when Man City tried to sign him.
He was saying shit like "I would never leave Milan, for any amount of money" he basically hijacked the negotiations with City because he didn't want to go to a relegation threatened club, AC Milan bowed to Kaka a missed a huge pay day.
Then he fucked of to Real for half the price City offered Milan in the next 1 0r 2 seasons I believe.
Man City has now won the EPL and probably will do really well in Champions league. Kaka, can't even find the pitch at Real. Ha!
Still, if he signed here I'd love it. Love it! Love it! :p :p

He's a lot better with head than Eric.
I think Carew would be a good addition in MLS for some team.
We need someone that can score regularly with his head. Mattocks has skills there, but Carew can bury them more often and we miss that in the team right now.
I think his best days may be behind him but he is the type of player that could thrive over here.
Just not sure how he could fit in with the current formation.
As for the new Brazilian midfielder, my source doesn't want the name out there until it's all ratified by MLS. All I can is that he's 23, has a bit of dig about him and some nice pace.
Even if I could name, I don't know if I would have put it out there out of respect for the Club, who must be getting pretty pissed off that they're announcements keep getting spoiled.
That's probably why Hassli got his phone call!
This guy is 23, Brazilian, a free agent, and mf:

can't say I've ever heard of him...
From Goal.com today:
"Carlos Bocanegra: Newly promoted Eintracht Frankfurt has shown interest in Carlos Bocanegra. The Rangers defender was recommended to the club by U.S. national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann. Bocanegra has expressed that he would consider playing in the German Bundesliga so this rumor may have some weight to it. "
Fingers crossed for Robbie Savage. (the new McWangus).

Anything really. Even, "oops we tried but there really aren't 2 or 3 new signings like we teased."
The international transfer window closed, but the Caps can still trade within MLS (I think) as well as pick up players out of contract. That would include players that are under contract but who work out something with their club to cancel a contract by mutual assent. Still lots of potential for new players.
Rummor - Paul Scharner - Versatile defender and can cover midfield
I just watched in real-time a RUMMOR get started on the twitter. Brutal.
For the record: James McFadden will not join the Whitecaps.

was looking at him too as a possible candidate....
I believe he is out of cantract after failing to have enough league appearances to trigger his contract extension. If true he is a free agent and could be signed anytime up to roster freeze date.

Is the international window different in the MLS to everywhere else in the world? Transfer deadline day is Aug 31 in Europe.

This is our mid-season window, similar to the month long January window in the UK.

Different from most of the world, yes, but leagues that play in the summer have a different set of windows. Our long window is at the start of the calendar year.
Elisant said: Seeing a lot of stuff popping up about James McFadden today.
If you have anything specific, it would be appreciated if you could elaborate - the best I could find was that as of nine days ago, he was training with Motherwell, would love Celtic to pick him up....
Not sure any of the sources (ie. Twitter) are reputable, but I've seen it in a handful of places...
"Transfer Market Feed @Signings_TDD James McFadden could be on his way to the MLS with the Vancouver Whitecaps #efc"
"Liam Grainger @LiamGrainger_ @hullcity_pfa On his way to Vancouver Whitecaps in America apparently."
A number of similar postings are saying he's talking with Hull City as well though, so...
Also, a BBC article suggests he's not open to a move to MLS yet: bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18939357

Bumping this for those who don't read more than a few prior posts.
As a true believer in the rise of MLS, I say screw him.

While fellow Scotland internationals Barry Robson and Kenny Miller are playing on Canada's west coast with Vancouver Whitecaps in MLS, McFadden feels it is too early to cross the Atlantic to continue his career. "I'm only 29, I'm still young and I want to play at as high a level as I can," he said. "It's not something that I'd be too keen on at this stage of my career."
Im an Everton fan, and McFadden's not even that good.

Got it, I've been had. Thanks.
Though to be fair to @craigwest7, he says he has it from someone who knows David Moyes' brother who happens to be a scout in Scotland.
