Because the people creating the chants are not completely devoid of creativity and vocabulary that they have to settle for saying 4 syllables at a time? Bar-ry Rob-son? Dar-ren Mat-tocks? Ken-ny Mil-ler? Really?
Yes, it's catchy, but so is Super Ken and Oh Barry Barry...
As for making things easy (really? easy?), you add the word SUPER for Kenny Miller's chant and OH for Barry Robson's chant. One word. Just. One.
Was in 248 today and 90% of the Bar-ry Rob-son chant was from there. I had to turn around to the guys behind me and teach them the Oh Barry Barry chant. It is also really annoying that no one in 248 pays attention to the capos. This in my opinion is why half the time the songs get so out of sinc
well the same can be said for the 'we're blue we're white chant', but that seems to have diminished in use as the season's progressed.
itll just take time and a bit of repetition from the core of the group

Is the goal not to have more people join in? Everyone knows the Eric Hassli chant - there were hundreds of people trying it out with Barry Robson today - why fight it that's all? Are we planning on retiring the Eric Hassli one now that he's gone and never using that chant for another player? I've chanted the Oh insert name here chant, and the Super insert name here chant a thousand times at other football stadiums, and its fine ... but my point is that if people want to sing Barry Robson's name to the same tune we sang Eric Hassli's name then who cares?
With the same reasoning we could just do 'we're blue we're white' because everyone knows that and it will have the most participation...Not everyone will know 'come on Vancouver' :)

btw, whats with the 5 rows of sitters in section 252???
Me and my friend (we are in section 252 row 4) did "South side on your feet" chant. (Instead of "east side on your feet") & they just wouldn't stand up and chant. I don't know what it was but they just wouldn't join the Southsiders and stand up.

Not suggesting that we only do one song ... just suggesting that it is fairly ridiculous for everyone to suggest we force fans never to sing Barry Robson's name the way we sang Eric Hassli's.

Meh. I like diversity.

Sat in north end few nights ago for first time, no atmosphere at ALL. The club desperately needs a support group there. Not a coincidence north end is always the emptiest part of the stadium. Getting to the point where it hurts the team, and franchise it's so quiet there.
They've designated the north end as the Family Section. As such, how much atmosphere would you expect? I don't think it's realistic to say to a family of 4 that you have to spend $200 to see the team play. Then again, there are also those who don't want to have to stand so that they they can see the game.
Tonight's game was my 3rd game of the season and it was for sure the quietest. Way to many long pauses between songs. Maybe invest in two new bull horns? The one that was being used tonight i could barely understand at curtain points of the game because it was crackly.
JP82 said: they really need to move the drum cafe there next year might lively up that area and the families might like it..
Put the drums there as they were last year and it just kills any possibility of getting something going, because you can't hear a thing from the Southside over them.
I thought the drum cafe was absolutely abysmal tonight. Whether it was us being more quiet or what... I don't know. They seemed to pick up some random beat and throw all attempt at synchronization out the window.
Also, for the first time that I remember, we were left hanging on a "White-Caps" chant from the Curva. Usually they pick it up (as we did from them earlier in the game); this time it was Southside --> rest of the stadium, while the Curva did their own thing.
valleywhitecaps said: Not suggesting that we only do one song ... just suggesting that it is fairly ridiculous for everyone to suggest we force fans never to sing Barry Robson's name the way we sang Eric Hassli's.
We don't force anyone to sing anything. If a few hundred (or thousand) people got together and sang this, there's nothing we could do about it. But given the lack of creativity in the general stadium population, it would probably be more efficient to just chant "White-Caps Play-er clap-clap-clapclapclap"
I'm down with the idea of giving the chant to Darren Mattocks, as he doesn't have a chant, we were frankly doing it for him when Hassli was still playing, and Miller and Robson both have chants we can use for them.

I agree that there's no need to retire the White-caps play-er chant, but at the same vein we shouldn't use it for every player either.
Let's give some people in the crowd credit here. They'll hear our chants for the players and they'll learn. Just like they learn Tssss... BOOM and YFB... its really not hard to pause, have a listen, and follow along.
I don't really care what others sing as long as we sing in a uniform and united fashion. we don't want the boys hearing a mishmash of noise from our side. we can do better than that.
Thanks guys for all the input. I did feel that there was a bit of a lack of energy in the second half as well. We do our best down on the field, but we can only be as energetic as you guys help us out with. The Cannon "Boom" and "YFB" are taking monumental strides and I can hear a good fraction of the stadium taking part. That being said, we need FULL participation on ALL the other chants. Pat and I are only 2 people, yelling as loud as we can, to help you guys en masse.
I appreciate all the attention you guys are giving us. Especially when people high up were doing the wrong chant for Barry. I gave a signal, you guys quieted down, and listened to the actual chant. Then we were able to get the entire Southside in unison with the correct chant. (I really do genuinely appreciate that people are following Pat and my lead)
I would personally like to work on this for next match:
- More bouncing/jumping
- Continuing the chants for more than 3 rounds
Thanks guys for all your enthusiasm and hard work. Let's keep it up vs RSL on August 11th!!!
also I agree with a poster I've noticed a couple times that when we start a chant and nothing is going on with Curva they will start a whole new chant why not do a couple of chants together? Also since I sit in the Eastside Sec 244 sometimes I get confused as to who's chants I am hearing RCB or SS? As to RCB do they have any specific chants to themselves? Cause if they do I don't notice it...
what happened to the radios we used last year? Would it not be worthwhile to have one in each section ( RCB, CC, SS) for coordination on the bigger songs.

Not to be pedantic, but you're in 244. It's in your signature line if you forget. ;-)
Agree about the banner; looking forward to seeing pictures of it (I can't see the one in your post; at my work computer it just shows up as a red X).

Thanks for posting Kris. I don't need ot really add anything else.
I know it was a Sunday guys and those are the tuffest days to get up for. your efforts are always appreciated and lets bring it even harde for the next match.
Cheers!!!
First of all the atmosphere was good and a bit chaotic.
Ironically, the spaces in 254 between Row H and the front had people mostly standing and singing again where they were mostly casual punters for the LA game so all a bit odd.
Our supporters group(s) are quite distinctive from other MLS teams I think - there is a lot of organic chanting as well as the organized stuff. I like that - but the Drum Cafe were brutal AGAIN.
Loved the CC tifo - didn't see it until I watched the game on PVR.
Our seats are just below the concourse in 248 and the Super Kenny Miller chant was being used but still over-powered by Ken-ny Mil-ler. The Oh Barry Robson chant was inaudible for us.
I think it would really help if we got the RCB on board with the "correct" chants for the new Scots. They start most of the chants/song where we are and could really help to educate the further reaches of the supporters sections.
Frank_Frankerton said: what happened to the radios we used last year? Would it not be worthwhile to have one in each section ( RCB, CC, SS) for coordination on the bigger songs.
Rather see them be distributed to people higher up if we want to go that route.
Curva is mostly ex Southsiders who broke off to do their own thing. RCB also likes to do their own thing. Getting all three groups to co-ordinate is harder than it sounds simply because these other groups have already decided that they don't want to do things the same way as us.
Some people in 251 were singing the "Super Ken" chant wrong, they repeated or extended lyrics a few times and that confused a lot of people. Eventually we'll get it because they're just recently introduced.
Also, we desperately need some sort of speaker or something for the back rows because after a couple of rounds, we always become out of sync with the other half of the Southside.
I thought it was fine on sunday. great job again by pat and kris. most of you complainers were probably not singing so it sounds quiet to you!!
and we have tried radios, flags etc before. they did not work. Just watch the capos!! Kris always moves his arms to the beat to the song so you just need to glance at him every few seconds.
can't wait for the 11th.
why peter has to keep spilling his beer is beyond me... ha ha!
RCB are so annoying. That drummer is a massive problem and they just start drunk chants. I am literally between the main body of VSS and RCB. I wish they were in another part of the stadium. I beg you RCB stop drumming out of time. We end up ahead of the VSS most of the time.

Somewhere with Leathers?

If I get seasons tickets with my wife and daughter, this is probably where we will end up. All three of us sing loud and proud so we will bring the party to the family section. Going to make 2 more flags also so we each have one.
And my daughter ( Almost 4 ) loves Spike, goes nuts whenever she sees him. Cried her hart out all the way from BC Place to our parking spot, so it will be good to be in his territory.

Is there anyway we could get a third Capo, or have either Kris or Pat move a bit towards 248?
I think the majority of the section (and the lower chunk of 249) is on board, but I think a little more direction would be helpful in the short-term.
It becomes more and more difficult each game with the RCB chanting/drumming off time or in complete contradiction to what is going on one section over. It wouldnt be so bad if they werent so close - it just turns 248-9 into a clusterfuck of conflicting, out-of-time chants.

I remember reading somewhere that they were a bunch of exchange students from UBC and SFU. Once the spring semester ended they seemed to get smaller numbers. They also got a hard time from security.
Some of them ended up joining the southside, so hopefully someone can provide a more accurate account.
I think Lenarduzzi said that they are with Leathers but he won't comment on rumours.
Didn't the majority of them just move back to where they came from when summer started?

I know you guys well (Curva) and I know you read this forum, so seriously, what gives, I get it, you want to be distinct, all power to you, I think it's great to have another area of devoted fans in the stadium, but FFS, sometimes unity is needed on chants like this!
You need to start going along with what the Curva starts up then you'll sound better on tv.

The second we do that, Curva stops their chant. It's true. The only one they do with us is the WHITE-CAPS chant really.

The curva doesn't react to the match and are tiny compared to the Southside. Why should this group follow them?
The Curva doesn't react to the match? It seems you have no idea what you're talking about.
Is it just me or does this "different groups different chants" thing seem to be very North American.
Anytime people post videos of groups from other leagues in the world there is a strong united chanting between everyone, in the section/stadium and the result has impressive visuals and audio. Where as in Vancouver and some of the other MLS teams have all these different groups who each have their own style etc. I'd imagine some of this just comes from the cultural mosaic we have here. As all the groups get bigger they will get louder and I can imagine it will make it more difficult to get chants/actions well coordinated with all the different chants happening at once (along with the bloody drum cafe)
While i understand everyone wanting to have their own experience, I hope one day the chanting can be something that unites the whole south end of the stadium.
rodderzzz said: Honestly lads, you need to stop going all nazi on what others can and cant do in the ground, they want to do something different and you trying to dictate to them is probably going to make them try even harder to change their chants!
Absolutely. There's a reason these groups aren't in ours. There's nothing wrong with that of course.

I hope so. It would be one more way that we improved the game of soccer.

I think you'd be surprised in the divergence of what the supporter experience can be like in Europe. In the UK its very common for sets of different fans to Start spontaneous unscripted chants - tifos are uncommon and designated capos unheard of. In Spain there is relatively little large scale singing. Etc. Etc. All these countries have so many variants.
By and large, the south side don't sing. There are a lot of people who love the "atmosphere", but don't contribute to it. I don't know if there's anything we can do but just keep singing and singing, and slowly, maybe in 5-10 years, people will join in with us.

I think you're spot on about people wanting to experience the "atmosphere."
I haven't been a SS member for long enough to know the answer to this, so hopefully someone can clarify things for me. Is there any way that the FO would make it so that anyone in say the lower parts of 248-252/3/4 must be SS members to have their season tickets there? Not GA, but just a modified set up?
Further to that, I can't remember what happened last year, but didn't someone on here organize a mass reorganization of the season ticket renewals in the SS, which sort of helped group everyone together? We were able to squeeze into the SS with our tickets last year, but are quite a ways up. Judging by the number of randoms showing up each game in the 5-8 rows ahead of us with Ticketmaster tickets, there should be some way to move us down. I'm fairly certain that we're not the only ones experiencing this either.

The change has already happened.
During the first game at BC Place, in 245, even joining in "Were Blue, Were White" got me some people turning around and staring at me funny.
Now, I sing Boundary Road every game and have many join in with me. And lots of non SS members join in or even start chants (like referee chants.)
We are getting there. Just gotta be patient.

We worked with the FO to concentrate our members for this season, and we'll likely do it again this year.
i for one have become quite frustrated with the lack of participation in the middle of the SS. If youre going to stand in the Southside at least TRY some of the songs... yeeesh
i take it the FO will not allow an aisle CAPO.
