I wouldn't be surprised. I really like Hassli but but it looks like he just doesn't fit in with Rennie's vision for this team. And he's taking up a ton of money to be sitting on the bench. I feel for him because he genuinely seems to love the city, and I'm sure he figured on being here for a while.
I love Hassli and wish the best for him but I wouldn't doubt that Rennie would want to move him.
We sure could have used him for that last 20 minutes tonight.
OldFan said: I would hate to see him moved mid season . We do need that depth in the playoff drive. THe best time to work on him is the off season.
Totally agree.
Not sure, but I really would not take anything Solkowski says as valuable. In my opinion he is an anoying tool. I for one am happy he is going to London for six weeks.
I really want Eric to stay and regain his Magic, my concern is that Rennie is going to be all googly eyed over our new DP's which probably means fin in the off season
He was just outside Gate A as we left, there had to be 30 people around him getting stuff signed, having pics taken, chanting his name. It was really something to see, kind of touching to see how people still love the guy.
But I suspect Perry was right, that as soon as they had an inkling they were getting Miller, they were probably shopping Eric.
So do we think he can get back in and save himself if that is the case? I for one will always back him.

I hope so, and I always will back him, too. But I don't think they brought Miller here to play wide, I don't see Rennie going to a 4-4-2, and I don't think you're going to pay $900,000 a year in MLS for a guy to be an impact sub. A bit worried, to be honest.

This is why he's a fan favourite. He goes out of his way to make himself accessible to the fans and seems like a genuinely nice guy.
If he goes I for one would be sad but I would completely understand the move. With Miller and Mattocks most likely ahead of him I dont see where he's going to fit in. Other than being a super sub. Which to his credit he seems to have adjusted to quite well.
Hassli would/could fit in. Just not as a DP.
Yeah if we could somehow re-negotiate his contract so he's not a DP then it would be great for him to stay and provide depth in quality up front.
Obviously you can give players a raise mid-contract, Camilo as case in point, but I wonder if you can restructure a player's contract down by mutual consent. Would we have to buy him out first?
Didn't they renegotiate Cannon and Thors contract this year, or did they just resign them after their current contracts had expired?
I believe they were on 1 year contracts.
If Hassli's contract is the rumoured 2 years plus a club option then they simple decline to exercise the option and attempt to negotiate an non-DP contract with Eric.
Spur, it has been mooted that it might be a three year contract with a one year option. In that scenario I suppose the Caps would have to wait one more year to renegotiate.
Hassli - DP hit - is $350,000 - above that is on the Caps. Do you see Hassli loving his horse ranch so much that he'd take more than a 50% salary cut with only a few years of prime playing/earning left? I suppose you could pull a De Rosario, use allocation money to boost his wage - but that is a strategy that only makes sense if you're looking to add another DP. 3 DP take 37% of your cap hit - I would suggest that 2-25% ding to the cap - is ideal to keep valued starters around .
I'd prefer to see Hassli star in a 4-4-2, but really, there's only so much playing time to go around, especially with one up top. Rennie has a "description" for each position and he tries to find a player to fit that description. I would suggest that neither Camilo nor Hassli fit Rennie's "description", and will be moved or traded as he finds what he wants.
The three man midfield is now very good. JMD behind Koffie and Robson in an inverted triangle is certainly very good by MLS standards. Thorrington and Watson are both injured, but have shown they can both play at MLS level, so I'd say our midfield is sorted.
Solkowski was exhorting people to call in on the post-game show . . . people here with opinions should do so. After all, if we don't phone in, the station will persist in playing all hockey, all the time (though on 1040 Taylor and MacDonald did talk soccer yesterday). I don't mind Solkowski as much as some here, the guy seems genuinely interested in the sport
No one fully understands the rules of Major League Soccer. Most MLS contracts run four years, two guaranteed and two at the club’s option. That said, at the end of last season, the Whitecaps declined their club options on Thorrington, Cannon, Nolly, Janicki, and Vagenas. There was a window, two weeks or so, I forget exactly how long, during which Vancouver to re-sign these players, providing the players agreed. The club reached agreements with John and Joe, but could not or chose not to with Jay, Greg, and Pete.
Eric Hassli’s about to complete the second year of his contract, which, assuming it was two years guaranteed, and two at the club option, could be exactly what the club wants right now. They could decline his option, and then offer him a new one with lesser terms. Eric seems to love the city and the fans. He’s enjoying his time here. It’ll be interesting to see if they go this route. Accept the option and you have something to trade, but at a higher cost than they probably want to pay. Decline and he may leave for nothing. As there is no upcoming expansion draft, he’d go straight into the re-entry draft.
Eric Hassli is a fan favourite. He’s their number one shirt seller (Lee Young-Pyo is number two). And more than that, he appears to love the city and the fans. I’d love to see him back here, but maybe in the 2-3 hundred thousand dollar range. He has a place in Rennie’s system (he's even exapanded his skillset under Rennie), it’s just not as important as it was in Thordarson’s and Soehn’s systems.

I have to admit that JMD restored my faith that he is a valuable addition to the team - I really thought he had a poor performance in Chicago....Watson was on the bench yesterday. Solkowski is knowledgeable , but spends too much time schticking - I don't want to hear "chicken wings " again - Green is too languid to host the post - game show - it will be interesting to see who will be in charge. I'll echo those who have an issue with it being at Doolins -,noisy, and I know the guy is just trying to make a living, but please go to commercial break when he starts to warble " Peaceful Easy Feeling.">

Hassli might want to stay because his new wife wants to stay. Unless another North American team would give us something worthwhile for him. Isn't his wife from Vegas? Maybe Chivas would want him :D
I like Eric, wish him the best, but I hope that perhaps the Caps loan him to FC Zurich, some European team where he can make some solid bucks, come back to us in say 3 years, close out his playing career - and enjoy his life here - at an affordable 6 fiqure salary.
Agreed about Tyler Green. He seems like a good guy, but being a radio personality isn't something everyone can do.
I don't know if there's space for Hassli in a one-forward system:
1 - Miller
2 - Mattocks
3A - Hassli
3B - Camilo
Once Salgado is back, you have to think he and Richards will be preferred on the wings, which leaves 4 guys fighting over one centre forward position. Yikes.
Stubbs said: His new wife might also realize they could buy a horse ranch in the swiss alps. Not to shabby...
Assuming a swiss team would offer a 30 year old player a large contract.

I can't see Rennie putting Mattocks on the bench.
Probably put Miller and Mattocks in, with one of them playing withdrawn.
I can see Renning trying Miller between Richards and Mattocks in the front 3.

I am already getting sad about that (and Koffie and Salgado too).
There is a lot of good talent on th Caps. I don''t want to think how different the roster will look in a few years.
Hassli to TFC? Or is my source bs'ing me?
Asked and answered.
Say it isn't so.... anyone but TFC o.O... I know we are in a playoff position atm, but having lost the Canadian Nutralite championship, losing to TFC last week, and now a fan fav moved to TFC (even though it was likely he wasn't fitting with Rennie's plans) this just feels liek a kick to the groin... two turns in a row o.O (I might have even accepted to the Impact... but this?).
Only saving grace is with TFC at least it will be a high draft pick and some roster room...
