Fuck.
Friends I know who don't follow the Caps much love Hassli and Chiumiento. Now, say what you will about real fans knowing more, blah blah blah, but this guy created buzz in the community, brought fans to the games, and brought those fans back. He produced on the field and sold tickets. We'll miss him.

HAHA :P I don't quite agree, but there is a grain of truth to that.
I'd recommend watching this video of Davide and Eric on the road:
guess we'll lose tonight against toronto. either that or tie 0-0 cause we have no offensive output at all..
According to Weber he wanted to leave:
@ProvinceWeber Davide apparently wanted to be closer to his family. Caps open up international spot & free up cap space. Reporters will miss the best quote
If he wanted the transfer then there wasn't much we could do to stop him. Really unfortunate for us but I wish him the best in the future.
Damn I bet his mom asked him to come home when she came to visit.
Should we start a pool as to how much weight he puts back on once he's getting momma's pasta dinners on a regular basis again?
If you ask the U-14 players who they want to emulate, Chiumiento is the only name that comes up. This is the biggest loss, imo. Canadians are great at defending, with the ball -not so much.
Very strange interview with Solkowski. Sounds like Rennie pushed him out.

Lot of those players idolize Leo Messi, but the Whitecaps haven't acquired him so we're fucked.
Gaining lots of respect for Davide from that interview with Solkowski. Perry was a little awkward with his questions, but good interview.
All the best in the future, Davide. You'll be fondly remembered and missed. Hopefully you'll still follow the Whitecaps in Switzerland.
DannyBoy predicted this would happen.

But seriously bummed now that he turned his game up by so much this year. I didn't think he and Robson could coexist in the midfield as the both seem to want the ball at their feet all the time.
I hope we get to see Teibert tonight as his family might be in the stands...

Sort of. He said he wanted to leave to be close to his family, but maybe would have stayed if the money and contract guarantee was there.
If Chiumiento wanted to stay, he could have not accepted Zürich's offer.
Well, he did take Zürich's offer so obviously as much as he enjoyed playing in Vancouver there were obviously other things he was willing to prioritize over that. No doubt the Whitecaps felt the same way: as much as they might have enjoyed having Chiumiento (and he sure got enough minutes that if Rennie was trying to "force him out" he was going about it in a weird way) they presumably enjoy making this move more.

I'll walk that back, with an apology....I actually checked your archives at SB Nation - it was our first road match against Philly last year and while gutted by the perhaps undeserved loss, I remember being over-joyed with the play/ that the Caps had signed Rochat. When I later read that you assigned him the most disappointing player for that match,I wondered if we had been watching the same game. I thought your wording had been stronger- apologizes.

My mind is actually blown you could remember that far back at all. But I was wondering if it might have been something like that; no apologies necessary.

Interesting they want to emulate the one of the laziest players on the squad. They should want to emulate Le Toux.
Work ethic can be learned at any age. Technique, not so much. See LeToux.
Sad to see Davide go but frankly I'm glad the Caps didn't match the 3 year offer from Zurich. It would have been an error to extend him that long IMO.
I will miss his panache on the field..the guy was absolutely an entertainer on and off the field.
Classy interview today with Solkowski. All the best Davide!
PS I still miss Knight and Akloul so I may well be too damn soft.
Add Nolly and we have the making of a supporters support group.
I have real concerns on how this is going to be covered by the local media and in particular, idiots like Squire Barnes at global (who still introduces the TFC/Vancouver game by showing the Jun's legitimate reaction to being poked in the eye).
Let's face facts: the average casual fan of the Whitecaps gets their news from the tele - not the Southsiders board. Media in this town - who have built careers covering NA sports like football and hockey - simply don't understand that soccer is an INTERNATIONAL game, and yes people actually move to Europe to ply their trade.
I'm worried that the collective media lines will be that a "star" Whitecap is fleeing the city and then ask who's next. WFC better be prepared to spin this in a positive light.

It would help the narrative if they got some money ( I bet they didn't) or if the roster spot and dollars are used for something exciting.
When TFC sold ADU to Rangers for $5million, the way it broke down - I believe- is that MLS and TFC split the transfer fee, but TFC couldn't use it for player acquisition, cap, and I believe it went to putting a artificial turf at Lampart stadium and towards the grass pitch at BMO. If a team transfers a player, they no longer hold the MLS rights to that player.
He played his ass off for us this year and really made a big difference. I wish him well and good luck back in the Swiss league.
I hope we got a bucket of transfer fee for this. I can see the Caps not being able to match an offer from FC Zurich. We're already pushing the salary cap.

That's fucking ridiculous.
Thought he was really good this year and worked hard too. hopefully we got some decent money in return.
Has to be someone offensive coming in, no? Davide was our assist leader, we can't go without replacing that, we hardly score enough as is.
So after moving Davide, are the Caps going to make a move for an offensive type player? All the hype of our powerhouse forward lineup has not lived up, as we are not exactly filling up the net, 21 goals so far, 1.1 GPG avg. The Caps' forwards need better service. Now with Davide gone, is Robson the guy, maybe but does he have the flair to open up space for himself to make the killer pass?
I would have thought we were defensively solid, but after tonight's debacle maybe Bocanegra is back in the cards....

I thought a team only surrenders the MLS rights for a player if they take the allocation money. In TFC's case since they used the money on I pitch I believe they will retain the rights to Edu.
From http://www.mlssoccer.com/2012-mls-roster-rules
V. RIGHT OF FIRST REFUSAL Right of first refusal grants one MLS club the first opportunity to add a player to its roster in the event that the player signs with MLS. Holding a right of first refusal applies only within MLS and does not indicate holding of the player’s International Transfer Certificate.
PLAYER TRANSFERRED OUTSIDE MLS: If a team receives allocation money as a result of a player’s transfer, the team does not retain a right of first refusal.
Given how snug we are to the cap I'm sure we'll take the allocation money. Not that Davide would ever come back to MLS anyways.
bili said: Did anybody think that Davide was playing hard this year trying to win some interest from Europe? He clearly wanted to go back so try hard for 4 monthss and get a contract offer the caps can't match.
Nope, I don't think so. He's overrated remember. Those "idiots" in Switzerland heven't a clue.
I think that Koffie, Canon, Rochat, Mattocks and YP Lee, may want to leave too, they've been trying hard for the last 4 months.

That could be said for EVERY player in this league. You continue to have no clue about this game.
Unfortunate that Davide left, whether Rennie "forced" him out, or whether he wanted to leave. And I hope that the 'Caps have someone coming in. They haven't done anything so far during this transfer window. 1.1 GPG just doesn't cut it, and tonight's loss against TFC - well, what's more to say. we need more offensive help. Or at least a player that can be more consistent with putting the ball in the net.
I would hope that Rennie has already got someone lined up to come in.
I'm expecting it to be by the end of July and hopefully even next week.
We need someone who can create, as it's badly missing out there at the moment.
Well i dont know the ins and outs of this but i do know that Chiumiento has been superb for us this year and very few players in the MLS have his level of skill. I'm personally doing to miss watching him play and i'm pretty sure the team is going to miss what he brings as well.
It's been a great season so far, i fear the loss of Chiumiento is going to have a negative impact and may drop us out of the top three as the season goes on. I'm pretty gutted about this :(
I hope we can sign a proper high quality DP for next year, Park Ji Sung just signed with QPR for £5m i dont know if we have that kind of money or if it would be possible to do a transfer like that, maybe the wages would be too high, i may be dreaming but i'd like to see someone at that level brought in asap.
I'm off to cry in my vodka.
limmeister said: Unfortunate that Davide left, whether Rennie "forced" him out, or whether he wanted to leave.
Has anyone suggested anywhere that Rennie forced him out?
Q: What are your thoughts on Davide Chiumiento?
"He has family back in Switzerland and he does miss them. He has the opportunity to go to a big club in FC Zurich who compete in the Champions League and win the Swiss league and it is very hard to stand in someone’s way when they get that chance to play there."
Think that pretty much sums it up. Good luck to him he should be playing at a higher level anyway so i suppose it was bound to happen.
Koslod said: sad to see him go
Agreed he was a quality player
I was over in Leavenworth today and went on internet blackout so I could watch the match when I returned at 11 p.m. So, I first heard this in TSN's pre-match on MLS Live.
I'm not panicked about this, but I am gutted. I absolutely loved watching the little guy, he did create much of what we did this year, and he'd picked up the effort level defensively - against Colorado in particular he was good in that respect.
Now, the phrase. "They didn't want to match ...," I doubt that means we tried to push him out, but rather that Zurich came in with a big salary offer and we had no possible way short of making him a DP to match it. He gets a shot at the Champions League, maybe a better crack at the Swiss national team.
We do have, once everybody is healthy, a surplus of players in the front three. Once Salgado comes back, he's likely to play down the left. He's different from Chiumiento, but he was doing quite well there. And you have to think we got a reasonably healthy transfer fee out of this and can convert our share to allocation money that might allow us to do some strengthening.
Still, despite all the logic, I remain stunned, and at least in the short-term, saddened.
