One of the true legends of Vancouver soccer turns 53 today.
I still remember when I was a little kid and first saw Carl Valentine play (I think it was for an exhibition match at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria). He was so much better than anyone else on the field, every time he put his foot on the ball was pure magic to my young eyes.
It's great to see him still involved with the 'Caps organization, and I hope they always have a place for him.
Happy Birthday to Carl Valentine!
Hells yes, cheers Carl, wishing you all the best.
Little bit of Carl story here.
When I interned at the Whitecaps in their 2nd last season at Swangard, one of the first games I worked I had the chance to meet and chat with Carl Valentine, great guy, super friendly, etc etc.
When I returned home (to my very anti-soccer family) I mentioned this to my parents and my mom (who really hates the sport) instantly perked up with a "oh you met Carl Valentine". From there she went on to describe how he was a total heartthrob back in the day describing how good looking he was and how she loved his accent. Kinda funny to see how back in the day Carl was pretty much the most eligible bachelor in Van City
Was out of town camping some, without access. Must be doing something right as the only campfire songs my boys could come up with were southsiders staples, including Oh my Darling Valentine. So a very belated Happy Birthday Carl. You are one of the true gents of the game and pure class!
