Long showed some good skill and a LOT of confidence for a guy who should have none. I became a big fan 2 minutes into his stint - he reminded me of young Steve Nash sitting on the bench playing mop up minutes and acting like he thought he was Magic Johnson. Long has quiet swagger that makes me think he could actually have impact in this league.

We can only hope that Rennie appreciates Long Tan's natural talents. He's not only a hard-working and skilled player, but could prove a useful marketing tool considering Vancouver's large Chinese population.

I don't particularly like to see "in season" athletes eating fast food.  Unless they are a lineman in throwball (who's goal is to be fat) they should be eating healthy at all times during the season.

Well, it is looking more and more like Tan will get his starting chance tonight.  I hope Tommy gives it a go, what does he have to lose?

Long, this is your time to shine. Bag a goal and you have a much better future with this club.  If you come up blanks, you may see yourself falling back to the bench and reserves.

    Seize the moment!

Long Tan had a wonderful performance today.

He was giving the RSL defense fits; and causing them to be VERY disorganized.

The two hand balls were a direct result of the defense being in such disarray.  I give this result to Long Tan running around them all day.

I wish he scored a goal; as ultimately a striker is measured by his goal production. So on that front Tan did not deliver.  But, I am  very pleased with his performance today.

Does anyone else see it this way?

  • I think he had a decent game, but it was great by our current standards.

It very much looked like he wanted Camilo to let him take the 2nd pk, which is a bit unprofessional, but i understand him wanting to get his 1st caps goal. Hopefully him starting & getting a good cheer when he was subbed will give him & the management confidence & we'll get more of a chance to see what he can do.

Long Tans achilles is his pace. We saw it a couple times tonight where he couldn't get around the last man. His movement off the ball is good, and he has a deft touch, but the lack of pace worries me a little.

If he can work on his timing and our entire team can work on their passing, he'll get goals next season. Good movement, and it's his quickness that messes up defenders, not necessarily his pace.

Good perforamnce last night and one that hopefully will earn him more opportunities. I did think he was at time trying to do too much. There were a few occaisions where he tried to dribble through the entire RSL defense. Aftere taking on one or too defenders and beating them it's time to pass the ball. Continuing to hold on to it allows the defence to collapse around you and ultimately you lose possession.

Still I was pleased with his contribution last night.

Earlier in the seasonKrisaug5 didnt think we'd see much of tan so he was low on the priority list. Since Tan has shown hid true skill, Krisaug5 has been too busy to get it done. Also Since the season is so close to over, krisaug5 doesnt want to waste time making new ones when players fates are undetermined with the approaching off season and coaching switch. If krisaug5 can find 2 hours of free time this week, he'll be making a Long Tan 2-stick

That's a bit scary - the commentators last night were talking about him being our fastest forward and referenced several balls that no other forwards would get to.
Really we aren't a very fast team, so it's good we play on one of the largest pitches in the league - I of course, blame Sohen!

Tan definately created some havoc with RSL. The only issue is due to his small stature, he gets knocked off the ball too often when inside the 18. I think he should think about shooting from distance a bit more (top of the 18), since he does have one hell of a hard shot.

Salgado also gets knocked off the ball easily. Difference is, he's only eighteen years old and will fill out, so strength will be gained once he matures. As for Tan, he's twenty-three or something the last time I checked, he should work on his shielding of the ball and work on balance because if you're going to be challenged, you're going to want to stay on your feet and continue the play.

That's what I said...the fact that his pace isn't better concerns me. He was sent in with some great through balls only to lose them in his feet or get caught from behind. Add some wheels and those turn into shots on goal.

He'll be back, it was just a one match ban for accumulation of yellow cards. I'd like to see all three of them starting against DC United, Long Tan deserves it, he's getting close to getting a goal. His confidence is going up each and every game, it'll only be a matter of time.

But the difference between USL and reserve matches and MLS is pretty big.

And stats do lie, as your stat of 1 assist in 146 minutes makes him instantly as good as Dede is silly. It's one assist. If he had made 1 assist in his first 45 minutes, would you extrapolate that into a 2.00 A/90min and crown him the greatest set up man the MLS has ever seen?

And finally, yes, he had 3 good chances on goal vs Man City. He should have scored on 2 of them and didn't. That's not a positive, in my books.

Either way I'd be happy to see him come in and sub for Jarju one day, or next time one of the other top 2 get injured, see him get a start. I'm just not confident it'll result it anything.

Tan is getting close to your best setup man ever in MLS; he's at 1.12 now. As for your last statement no need to respond facts are facts. Are you becoming a Convert now? Oh by the way how would you like that crow cooked? More time more wins for WFC.

Yeah, Tan had a good game. But I hope your 'close to best set up man ever in MLS' is tongue in cheek. He has 2 assists. I'm more than willing to give the guy some time with the first team, but he's behind Hassli, Jarju, and Camilo on the depth chart.

My crow sandwich will be eaten when he can consistently make an impact on the game greater than the three mentioned above.

I believe it is time to ask how you would like that sandwich? The only problem is I will need to get OldFan to deliver it for me since there might be some customs issues sending it from the States.

Well everyone.  There were many nay-sayers when I first created this thread.

When I saw Tan in the pre season and in reserve/residency I really felt this guy had the potential to be something.

I only felt he needed some playing time, and then starting to be able to take his time to shine.

Long has taken these two starts as golden opportunities.  He has run with them and performed very well.

He is a guy who could really catch on with the fans and supporters; become a major favorite and a marketing point for the Whitecaps.

I hope they see this as well, and get him locked into a nice new deal for a decent rate.  He will still be  relatively low cost!

Thanks to everyone for finally seeing what he can do.  I was so sad to see him buried for most of the year.

He is exciting; and inspires his team mates.

Did you notice tonight how the offence basically died when he came off the field?  He really does inspire his teammates with his energy and work effort.

And, do you notice his first touch?  This guy can "flick" a ball to another player so well, quickly, and accurately.

He really stretches a defense, giving room for other players.  It is not a coincidence that Camilo has been bagging goals with Long Tan starting.

Hope to hear other people's thoughts.

I'm happy for him, and he's making the most of his opportunity and is earning a look next season. A streak is not consistency though. He's fresh legs relatively speaking, to the rest of the squad. Let's hope he continues his upward trend.

Tan has been great the last two. Let's not crown him lord and savior to the club yet.

However, if he notches another goal this season, I'll buy BillyRay and OldFan a beer before the season opener next year. ;) will that substitue for the crow sammie?

Well I don't know, you have been pretty rough on the kid all year without him even getting a half chance. But you can use the beer to wash down the sandwich :)). I have been saying all along to get some wins put him in the game. Look how much better the whole team plays when he has been in the match for more than 5 minutes. Hell three of the last 4 wins he has been on the pitch for at least 15 minutes. Lets see what happens the next 2 matches.

Yes. But the way Tan plays, he opens up a lot of space for the other guys who are pushing forward. He has a major impact due to this.

  • True enough, but the team as a whole changed once he came off in the DC match. As O/F stated above, "the offence basically died when he came off the field".

It is a far different offence with Hassli up front.  He is great at finding a shot and blowing the ball into the net; but he does not run around and create space for other players.  I would love to see a formation with Tan and Hassli as strikers with Camilo in the midfield and attacking.  Imagine Eric with all that space created by Tan.

It's not correct to say the offense died as a direct result of Tan coming off. I suspect that Hassli and Salinas were brought on to not take risks and kill off the game (somthing that we have failed to do many times in the past). You don't take risks trying to score at the end of a game. You protect the ball. You play safe to ensure the win. I suspect the offense dying was largely as a result of the instructions given to the players coming on and they did exactly what was needed to keep the 3 point.

Hassli arguably opens up more space for others than Tan as he often draws multiple defenders to him. He is a known threat that opposition defenses mark tightly.

Again not a criticism of Tan. He did well but let's not go overboard and make it sound like he was the sole reason we won. I would argue that the left side of Rochat and Harvey was the biggest reason we won on Wedneday.

No I wouldn't say it died but the ball sure stayed in the VWC end of the pitch a lot more in the 2nd halve vs the 1st half.

And Tan dosen't open up space? Did you look at the first goal? He pulled 2 or 3 defenders away from Camelo. Would love to see him and Hassli start up top together for just 1 match.

I agree that the left side was a big reason for the win. Both crosses came from this side for the goals. Now lets get this going on the right. I know you are not criticizing Tan, but he has been on the pitch for the last 3 of the 4 wins, might just be luck but.........

^  I didn't say Tan didn't open up space. I said Hassli opens more.

Tan for me is a good player and definitely should be in the starting rotation with Camilo and Hassli. They each give a differnt look which keeps the opposition guessing. He has definitley moved ahead of DC in the Striker depth chart.

The right side won't improve until we get a proper full back and neither Khalfan or Salgdo can deliver the final ball like the guys on the left.

I think you probably mean Salinas rather than Salgado but, yeah, agree with you. Definitely need a quality right back and right-sided midfielder.

Well, I hope Long Tan didn't take his benching for Jarju in a negative way.  I guess Tommy probably wanted to try again with his big DP guy in desperate hopes something would happen.

There is no excuse to put Tan on the bench in the final game in front of the home fans.

If he doesn't start next week, I may very well walk out in disgust.
