The Victoria Highlanders are team in the PDL.  If you haven't been out to any games they are really inexpensive and a great time. They even have a supporters group called the Lake Side Buoys.  The last two years they have had a great package. For only $200 you get a jersey, a scarf, tickets to every match, and a lanyard which gets you a FREE beer at every match.  Also they have a great beer service where some sexy ladies bring the beer to you.  It sure beats the queue.  Also Langford might seem like a long way away, but they have a game day bus from downtown on matchdays. For $20 you get a burger and a pint at the Bard and Banker which includes a bus ticket to and from the stadium. Normally the Lakeside Buoys pile up on the bus with a few 'pops; for the trip and sing their hearts out.

  • The missus and I should be up for this, especially as there won't be an FC Edmonton semi-final in the Voyageurs Cup.

I was about to ask for Monday, May 23rd off from work... then realized it's a stat holiday.  Brilliant!

Yes, I was bitching about the late sunday start too before I realized the monday is a holiday.

Should be a fan trip although I might sleep in my boat instead of a hotel.

I will be at as many Vic High games this year as possible. I'm making up a Black & Gold flag and a banner for the Lake Side Bouys end, though I do have small kids. And bagpipes.

I found a place that sells black and gold flags (half & half or chequered). I will be putting in an order for some and they should be around $20.

I thought I posted them on the Lake Side Buoys Facebook page? Was going to do another order to combine shipping but if you wanna go alone: http://www.theflagshop.co.uk/kilkenny-blackgold-flag-295-p.asp

One small problem. The description says "sleeve" but what I got has grommets so some adjustment will have to be made when I find an appropriate pole.

Ah, that looks like an inexpensive and good idea. Thanks for the link.

I'm making a square, large chequered flag. It's all good!

Typical, I move to Vancouver and they move the team four blocks from where I use to live.

    Great news though

The intimate facility at Langford is excellent, but I can't say I'm sad to see a move to RAP - a place where I've watched the Vistas, 86ers, Winnipeg Fury, Dundee United, Chelsea (yes, Chelsea FC from London), and numerous international teams.

Due to scheduling conflicts, the Highlanders will be stuck at a much much much better venue for half the year? Well that's a shame.

  • So, game one of the Highlanders season and the beat the Timbers U-23 in Portland 1-0

The Highlanders goal tender even stopped a penalty kick!

Yup great start for the Highlanders.  Got season tickets, looking forward to the games!

  • Though they lost to Kitsap today, apparently the Pumas made a late charge and won 2-1
  • I have a funny feeling that Kitsap is going to be the team to beat in the division this year

It sounds like the Clan had two good games on the weekend. Jordie Hughes - what a player. I wonder why he hasn't played professionally. Could he crack the FC Edmonton line up? This keeper has saved two penalties already. And who's this Czech import?

    Love the Kitsap supporters!

BTW, despite what Ben Massey wrote in his 86ers Forever column, the home opener vs your lot is this SATURDAY MAY 21st not Sunday.

I have enjoyed some of Massey's writing, but I was pretty disappointed with his lame apology for gay-bashing (he compared it to the "you fat bastard" taunt) in a recent column on the CSN.

I love singing, dancing, flags and football, but in 2011 there is no defence for violence, sexism, racism, or anti-gay comments in soccer culture. I will continue to argue that swearing also has no place, but I know that's not one I will win until we stamp out the four more harmful things in the previous sentence.

I hope I'm not explaining a joke you already got, so forgive me if so, but I am Ben Massey. (Not that I'm saying I mind your expressing your opinion! Just hoping you weren't thinking that you speaking in safety from an author's prying eyes.)

No, you weren't explaining a joke I already got (linear thinkers like me miss most internet jokes unless they are explained), so thanks for letting me know who you are on this site. I don't think I have any internet anonymity here, considering I sign in here from my Facebook account and try to keep my internet pseudonym consistent on all internet sites. I'm still reading your posts, but I obviously disagreed with your opinon on the comments on that post (by Pierce? Pearce?). Cheers.

Good on them for having supporters. If any of us lived there, this would be our team. It takes dedication to support the PDL! Not only that, I can respect any team in hoops.

They got a mask on. They'll never get into Empire.

  • As the Kitsap Pumas and Portland Timbers U23s have identical records (and drew against each other), there will be a coin toss this morning to determine which club will qualify for the US Open Cup.

6 VHFC supporters made the trip to Bremerton to the VHFC / Kitsap Pumas game on Sunday, 24 June. The game was a 3-0 demolition of the PDL-leading home team by Victoria Highlanders. Pubs in Port Angeles and Bremerton, burger bbq hosted by Kitsap fans, great weather, great football - it was a great day all around. We outchanted the Kitsap fans, though having bagpipes does help in that regard.

For those looking for the chance to have fun with a smaller group of fans, supporting your PDL team is the way to go.

  • The PDL round-of-16 playoff match between Ventura County Fusion and Portland Timbers U23s on Saturday at 5:00pm will have a live stream.

Ventura are the favourites: they had the best record in the Western Conference, and did well in the US Open Cup this year (knocking out LA Blues of D3, and giving Chivas USA a scare in a 1-0 loss).

  • After extra time: Ventura County Fusion 1-0 Portland Timbers U-23s.

Seattle Sounders U-23s vs. FC Tucson up next (~8:30pm), with Seattle being the last remaining Cascadian PDL club. Seattle are favoured to win today; and if they meet Ventura tomorrow in the conference final, the extra 30 minutes that Ventura had to play today could prove decisive.

    Live video stream is here.

  • LOL... Seattle's former MLS striker, Nate Jaqua, starting again today for the U-23s. Unless I'm mistaken, he didn't play a single match during the regular PDL season, but was brought in for the playoffs. Me thinks the USL need to tighten up the squad rules for 2013.

They're standing, and they've got flags, scarves, and club shirts. Families tend to be sitters/clappers/vocally silent/visually unassuming, so good on this lot.
