DP Rumours
  • Doesn't look like it will be Robbie Keane, according to the BBC website, Spurs have just accepted Birmingham's £6,000,000 bid

I'd would have loved to get Keane up front, i think he's a perfect fit. It's still not 100% that he'll go to Birmingham, but i'm pretty sure we don't have £6,000,000 to spend either.

MLS transfer window opens tomorrow, and i do hope we've a DP striker on the way.
  • Who else is likely?

I had thought Roque Santa-Cruz, but it looks like he's gone back to Blackburn on loan

  • MLS is a tough sell on players that still have something to give in England, Spain, Italy, Germany, France,...this list just keeps going the more I think of it.  MLS is perceived "very poorly" in Europe.  Don Garber tries to spin this fact into anything other that what it truly is.  Until the MLS fixes the fundamentals that are wrong it will be hard for clubs to attract quality talent that aren't past their sell-by-dates IMO.
"If you're a burglar, it's no good poncing about outside somebody's house, looking good with your swag bag ready. Just get in there, burgle them and come out. I don't advocate that obviously, it's just an analogy." - Gas legend Ian Holloway.
  • Two players out of contract this summer that could make a difference are Owen Hargraeves and Michael Owen.  Both are made of glass but I'd love to see either of them wearing a Caps kit.  OH especially.

Neither of them are fit enough, Hargreaves has barely played for three years!!!!! He wont last two minutes on plastic pitches. Owen won't come either, would miss his horses too much

At what point do we hit the "FFS sakes, we have no strikers" button and start freaking out a bit? When does the transfer window close officially?

^ I believe its not for a couple more months at least? We've got time, but sooner the better. training starts in a couple of days, better see some strikers joining up soon. Caps are really leaving this a bit late.

  • MLS primary window closes April 15...that's the relevant one for incoming players to MLS.  The European window is relevant in that a player must be released by Jan 31 (or whatever it is this year) for him to be eligible to join on as a free agent after the MLS window closes, i.e., not a transfer per se.

After the Euro window closes, any player whose certificate is held by a Euro club would pretty much have to be acquired on a free (since MLS is unlikely to pay a fee for anyone) before April 15.  The secondary window opens July 15ish.

Trades within the league possible up to roster freeze, sept 15.

looks like keane's still in limbo on this one... nice to see the endorsement from trap!

So Seattle is not pursing Atlético Madrid and Uruguay striker Diego Forlán.  He is now rumored with
Tottenham for £9 million, with a £100k/w wage demand. His 0.6 strike rate in La Liga is crazy.  He could score dozens of goals for us this season.   I know its unlikely, but seeing he was linked with the Sounders I don't think its impossible.

Listening to the Score's Footy Show yesterday, Eidur Gudjohnsen is apparently being shopped to TFC.  There's a guy I wouldn't mind the Caps picking up, and I think could do well in MLS.  Plus, I doubt his wage demands would break the bank.

Eidur & Teitur, nice Icelandic connection.  Guy that sat behind me at Swangard has been speculating that one since last spring.
  • ^^He indicated in the UK media that he had offers from "America" but wants to join Ajax.

Does "breaking the bank" really matter? We've got wealthy owners, lots of sponsorship money and DPs all cost the same cap-wise.

Anyone notice that Jozy Altidore was loaned to Bursaspor in Turkey today from Villarreal?  I would have thought that would be the level of player we would have been targeting.  I guess not.

  • Does the question now turn to: Who did they try to get and why did it fall through?

I'm not necessarily saying that they won't bring in anyone but you have to think that somewhere there was a 'plan A' that envisioned DP on our team by the start of training

    new to mls question:
with the european transfer window closed how do the whitecaps sign anyone from overseas? is it free transfer only or would we have to wait until the european season is over? tried to search for all the info but...

MLS doesn't have the same 'transfer window' as the main European leagues. The MLS windows are 15 January - 15 April and 15 July - 14 August.  The important thing to note is that transfer windows are for incoming players only.  So a player can be sold by a European club while their window is closed, as long at the window is open where that player is being sold to.

So for us the whitecaps can still buy players up until April 15. Although loans are slightly more complicated. Because if a team from Europe loans us a player they don't get them back until our window opens again.

Thanks to piltdownman for the answer on twitter earlier. The European window is for inbound transfers only. We could sign someone away from a Euro club right up until the MLS window closes in April.

Edit: beat to the punch, and with a much more complete answer.

  • Forlan! Oh shit, Folan. Hopefully not a DP, but a striker nontheless:

  • Folan is actually a very good player. He's played for the Ireland national team in the past and is a lightning quick. Good player. Let us hope it's Vancouver that are looking at him.

  • Forlan scored 12 goals in 58 matches for hull and hasn't played in 16 months. Sounds like he would fit in with last years team

If we're sticking with Irish strikers, I think Doyle has more potential than folan...of course any republic player on our squad is a bonus for me!
    Post edited by Taylor23 at 2011-02-03 13:46:42
  • I second that Taylor, but Doyle is playing Premier League footy. He's not going to move away from that. Lee Carsley wouldn't be bad. He's in the Championship at Coventry I think. Shane Long is a decent striker. I could see us getting these guys if we went after them. Like you said any Irish player is a bonus.

At the moment Alessandro Del Piero is in talks with Juventus for a contract extension, and it seems that the club  is stalling.
I read today in the Corriere dello Sport, that Del Piero's camp is trying to pressure a resolution soon, because if he doesn't get the new contract he wishes to consider other proposals, and the article specifically mentions ones from America.

Wonder if he's on Steve Nash's friend list?

Report: New York Red Bulls Tracking Bayern Munich Striker Miroslav Klose
Bayern Munich striker Miroslav Klose has been linked with a possible move to Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls.

The team is reportedly looking to add a third Designated Player to their squad list after former River Plate and Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel's contract expired with the club and the Colombian subsequently moved to rivals Los Angeles Galaxy

As a Germany fan I'd love Klose here. Too bad he's old now.

  • oh no, not McCarthy, he was god-awful for Blackburn Rovers. Slow, Lazy, uninspired - and that was 3 years ago and it seems like he's spent the last 3 years eating. A fast league like the MLS would eat him alive.
