Robbie Savage  has been linked with Vancouver for a couple months now.

Thye media would love him, but would he really help the club?

  • He is 8 months older than Beckham, and more of a midfield engine than Beckham is.

Would his knees last on the shitty surfaces he would have to play on over here?

I could see him become a media darling over here...maybe that's his plan?

Personally, i think that, in vancouver and the MLS in general, media coverage is as important to success as on-pitch performance. So i like the idea of a media personality who also happens to be a smart-yet-rough player.

I think he'd do well in the MLS for a year or two, he's got character and now that zee is gone we need _someone_ capable of brutalizing the opposition.

From the BBC link Brett posted, it sounds as if he's very excited at the thought of coming here. I like the enthusiasm, we need more of that!

  • He has been given Derby's blessing and I for one can't wait to see him play. He's a very good footballer and he's still well able to play. Age becomes a factor if you haven't looked after yourself. Teddy Sheringham and Gary McAllister were the two best premier league players a few years back for Man Utd. and Liverpool and they were 39 and 37 respectively.

Savage still has enough to offer for a couple of years at least and is one of the few good characters left in the game. Looking forward to seeing him.

don't think this would be a good signing personally, 37 years old, legs have gone as anyone at Derby will testify and is more interested in his up and coming career in the media. Would be coming for his pension.

Bringing him here would be a great move. He will be able to contirbute at the MLS level for a couple more seasons, but most importantly he will be an ambassador for the game/team while he is here...he will immediately be the most outspoken and media savvy sports personality in town...he will sell the game. CAN'T WAIT to see him here! =D>

  • I'm 50/50 on this one.

    I'd like to see Keane.

I'd especially like Ricky Lambert as a squad player (non-DP).  Ask me why over a pint sometime and I'll talk your ear off....proven goal scorer and he's looking for a move to something "bigger".

He's currently at Southampton for those who don't know.

Never been a fan of Robbie Savage.  I find him as a player to be over-hyped and dirty.  Good with the press though, so if he generates interest in the media then that's the only upside to him that I see.

I would prefer Keane if it had to be one or the other.

^ of course Keane is the best choice, no question. Savage will be brought over largely to bring attention to the Caps from outside their current fanbase  - its an exercise in legitimizing the game for the "soccer sucks" folk. Fair enough.

Keane would be a decent signing, Savage wouldn't I dont think. Lambert would be a crackin signing but wont leave England

Just watching the Derby-Notts Forest game I recorded this morning.

    Anyone see it and Savage?

He was subbed around the 55th minute mark, trooped off in the huff, took off both his boots and threw them petulantly on the ground, then sat looking pissed off on the bench without his tracksuit on for the rest of the time.

He had a poor game and was lucky not to be sent off.

Interestingly, as he left the pitch he did the usual applause to the fans but then a little wave. A goodbye wave?

If he does come, let's hope he makes a better impact during the game than he did today.

I watched it this morning before the van Persie show! =D>

I noticed the wave too...maybe he knows something we don't yet? Was it a cheeky wave to the Notts supporters? If that was his swan song for Derby, I would think that Savage being an emotional guy was likely just pissed at going out after a game that was not his best. He did allude to it all being in the heat of the moment on twitter...just about as fast as they were in the locker room after the match. I dunno...emotion in your game is good I think. The hissy fit might have been misplaced, but  w/e. To me it showed he cared, for whatever it is worth.

Oh I agree Dutchman. I would much rather have players that gave 100% and wore their emotions on their sleeve than someone who is just with the Caps or in the MLS for the money.

Robbie has that with Derby. Not so sure he's going to have that with us - at least not right away.

I played the wave back and it was defo to the Derby fans.

He's a great guy and two years ago I'd have had him here in a heartbeat. What will be great is what he can bring to the Club OFF the pitch and in the media and the more I get used to the idea of him coming here, the more I get excited about that part of it all.

    Hopefully that's completely accurate!

It wouldn't surprise me if the Whitecaps frowned upon Savage's blabbing his potential signing to the media, for that matter.

I also think the whole saga has raised more question than it answers:

    http://aftncanada.blogspot.com/2011/01/robbie-savage-turns-down-move-to.html

He would have been great off the field but with limited opportunites. Right decision all round I feel, but his high praise of the Caps in the UK media may have some other players there interested. It would still most likely be the ones more at the end of their careers though

time ,lovely people a great chance for someone good luck vancouver

  • I'm a big Savage fan from his Blackburn days and i would have loved him to come, but we can do a whole lot better and he always has an eye on his post football career - plus his stupid mouth would allow a whole new continent to appreciate his arrogance and ignorance; also the incessant diving and shenanigans would immediately get us the wrong rep in the MLS.

bullet dodged bigtime. Those saying he'd have been great off the pitch may have been right. But if you build a team that wins the city will start to take interest anyway. 33+ year olds arent the answer to that!
