Well there is about 1.5 months until the Transfer window opens, and 1 month until draft season.
Many options have already been declined for players around the league, and with trades for draft position always a possibility there are some interesting times ahead.

No word yet on particulars, just rumblings. RBNY could deal Kenny Cooper, RSL need cap relief, Houston looking defense, Chivas USA=who knows
I would take Kenny Cooper for sure. Wonder what it would cost to get him in Blue and White?
From twitter: BREAKING: Olave & Espindola head to RBNY, W. Johnson to Portland as RSL shake up roster
Courtesy of Soccer by Ives, that last one. If Portland nabbed Johnson... Fuck.
I wonder if we were in the conversation for Johnson.
Chris said: Courtesy of Soccer by Ives, that last one. If Portland nabbed Johnson... Fuck.
I echo this sentiment...
Ouch that's good for Portland and bad for us
Details on Olave, Espindola, and Johnson:
RSL is set to trade centerback Jamison Olave and forward Fabian Espindola to the New York Red Bulls for a large amount of allocation money, pending league approval, multiple sources confirmed to Soccer By Ives on Sunday.
RSL are also set to trade Canadian midfielder Will Johnson to the Portland Timbers for allocation money, sources confirmed to SBI. The Canadian national teamer has, along with Olave and Espindola, been a regular starter for RSL for years.
By trading away Olave, Espindola and Johnson, RSL are set to save $1 million in salary, while generating more than $500,000 in allocation money, sources with knowledge of the deals confirmed to SBI.
Also...
Several MLS teams have agreed to trades in recent days, but a league-wide moratorium on trades until after MLS Cup has kept those deals from being approved.
Could our Whitecaps be involved in some of those already-agreed-upon moves?
Another player leaving RSL:
jonny steele @jonnysteele22
Goodbye RSLfamily pleasure to be at an organization like this and play wit top player! All the best mls2013
RSL has been a contender almost every year. Could this be the year they screw things up? I find it pretty improbable that they can replace those players with ones that can make the same impact for the same amount of money.
Bring back Steele!
Thierry Henry rumoured to be in discussions for a move to Corinithians:
Kosuke Kimura may be on the move from Portland to join the Red Bulls:

Michael Harrington could be heading to Portland from Sporting KC:

Rafa Marquez could be joining Columbus Crew:

BREAKING NEWS...El defensa Mexicano Rafa Marquez deja NYRB y pasa al ColumbusCrew. MLS
Just saw Juninho could be headed to NYRB? Or is my Portuguese worse than I think?
Friday, Dave Martinez writing at Soccer by Ives reported that Gerard Houllier, Red Bull's director of global soccer last mentioned as the man leading the day-after firing squad, flew south to Rio de Janiero to meet with Juninho Pernambucano, a 37-year-old midfielder who will be 38 by the time the 2013 season kicks off.
Another Juninho, who is 37 years old and plays for Vasco de Gama.
Elisant said: Another Juninho, who is 37 years old and plays for Vasco de Gama.
And used to play for Lyon :-) I soooo wanted him in the caps lineup for the inaugural season but thought he was old even then. Could we just sub him in for free kicks?

I wonder if MLS would institute an old-man rule like that.
I know nothing about the guy, other than I've read repeatedly that he's a "dead-ball specialist".
Heh, I was thinking that whatever hanky-panky is going on behind the scenes to get Juninho (the younger) for a song in LA wouldn't fly in a transfer, so there you go.
Also on the Rafa front: https://twitter.com/EmpireOfSoccer/status/275423702957580288
HATS OFF TO @MASSIVECITYFFC! Starting an INTERNATIONAL rumor with one nonsensical tweet! Rafa isn't going anywhere #RBNY fans #Sorry haha
Do a YouTube search. Some of his free kicks were phenomenal.

The talk all season has been about how this was RSL's last go-round with the current batch of players. Cap, age, etc all working against them.
Could we have had Johnson for allocation money? Man, missed that boat.
Please steal Will from Portland. It would be good for us and sticking it to them would just make getting a quality player that much sweeter.
So I guess all of these will be announced tomorrow? or sometime this week. Kenny Cooper would be a good pick up only if we can get him service.
The trouble with allocation money is we don't know the amounts, therefore we don't know anything. Because the Timbers finished so shittily in the standings, they'd have a lot more allocation coming in 2013 than the Whitecaps. We may have just been outpriced.

Has allocation money for next season already been distributed? Or do they tell them how much they get after the regular season to set the wheels in motion? This allocation money business is such bullshit.
Man that is complicated

:O
He's the only Juninho worth knowing about. But at 37 I don't really know how much of an impact he will make. If they get him for anything less than DP money he should be ok.
Back in the day he was an awesome player. Unfortunately he was one of those players who had all the tools to be great but didn't apply himself consistently enough.
Rennie has lots of time to bring in players, but I'd prefer if he finished transfers before February.

Real Salt Lake has officially declined options on four players, gutting two 2012 signings in Jonny Steele and Emiliano Bonfigli. Also released were second-choice goalkeeper Kyle Reynish and young Brazilian striker Paulo Jr.

Interesting tidbit in there:

(It should be noted Cooper’s deal is NOT a Designated Player deal, with the figure being a total that can be reached by buying down the number with allocation money to get it to the max non-DP salary limit of $400,000.)
Did I miss this number jumping to 400k for next season?
I didn't notice that at first, good question. Let me see what I can find out.
Ives Galarcep @SoccerByIves
RSL @ElisantX 350K is what counts vs. cap. max-non DP salary has been more than that for a while.
I'm not sure that helped explain it or just made the issue more confusing. Unless this is meant prior to allocation funds being used to lower salary...?

You're confusing yourself by thinking that the max cap hit is the same as non-DP max salary. Totally different things. There are many players in MLS that make more than 350k and are not DP's. The DP is a mechanism by which you can sign a player to any size contract and have only 350k of it apply to the salary cap. If you want to pay Shalrie Joseph 450k and not be a DP you can do that. You would have to be able to pay the cap hit down to 350k with allocation.

Ah, you're right - thanks.
Columbus joins the cut brigade, deciding to go with young players and shed salary. It is obvious that a lot of teams in this league are losing money right now. In one way, it's good that teams are going to build this way but it also speaks to the lack of success of many teams, but also the league in failing to secure a lucrative television deal that would paper over the cracks.
Will Johnson at $250k, no thanks. Vancouver has been quiet so far. Need to hear from Lee soon.
Will Johnson had a choice to come to Vancouver but picked Portland instead it seems
I'm not sure we have the caproom for Johnson. Then again we did receive a fair amount of allocation money this year.

Pilts is always the guy who seems to have the answer on this, but I believe most of the non-DP salary costs are paid by the league.
The west is getting stronger and the east is getting weaker. Sucks for us.

Kimura to NYRB is official:

The New York Red Bulls announced today that they acquired defender Kosuke Kimura and a natural second round 2013 MLS SuperDraft pick from the Portland Timbers in exchange for allocation money and the MLS Homegrown rights for defender Bryan Gallego.

Which is precisely why we who support a healthy team need to temper our enthusiasm about just how much expansion and improvement is possible over the short term. It's great that MLS average attendances are 3,000 more than they were pre-2007, but on the other hand, they're ONLY 3,000 more than they were pre-2007.
The dream of a national broadcasting partner in the US has proved elusive for the NHL, as well as MLS. Unlike Canada where the two national sports channels are NOT full, in the US the sports channels seem to be saturated already, what with baseball, NFL football, college sports, and the NBA.
How numerous are these people that tune in and watch random teams? I watch Whitecaps, and although I have started watching other MLS games I'm never going to watch many of them. The Lions are must-see for me, but I don't watch many other CFL games. I watch no NHL games that don't include the Canucks, even in the playoffs. I'll watch entire Aston Villa games, but for any other English game, the highlights package is all I have time for in the week. Are people like me really outnumbered by people who watch television all day, and will watch every team in a particular league they follow? I don't see how that can be the case. Surely building regional broadcast partnerships must, overall, give you much larger viewership than a "Game of the Week" ever will for for MLS within the 'North American' sports marketplace. The only sport I see where people will watch every game broadcast is the NFL (spit). MLS has to compete with televised games from England, Spain, and Italy if it's going to play the "watch the game of the week" game, and I don't think they can compete with those leagues for the type of fan who watches players and leagues rather than one specific team.
Portland ships off defender Eric Brunner to Houston for Allocation money:
Ives Galarcep @SoccerByIves
With Andre Hainault leaving Houston (He's out of contract and not-resigning) Dynamo add some solid defensive depth in Brunner.
Any ideas where Hainault ends up?
Looks like RSL/Portland will be the big buyers/sellers this year. I dont expect much out of the Whitecaps to be honest. I think if anything we will be getting a player from outside the league.
@MLS: TRADE: This is big. @NewYorkRedBulls acquire @RealSaltLake duo Fabian Espindola + Jamison Olave for allocation money. http://t.co/bwSy9KxP
