Aside from our obvious shared love for the Whitecaps, what teams in other leagues across the globe do you follow?
St Etienne in France's Ligue 1 is one I will mention to get the ball rolling. Any other ASSE fans out there looking forward to Aug 11 against Lille?! Allez les verts!
Try not to be too horrified; but none.
I have a hard time imagining myself rooting for an overseas club that I have zero ties to. My ancestry has no ties to any decent footballing cities, so that's out the window. I bear an Irish surname, but neither my father nor his father were soccer fans. My mother was from Berlin, but I had to google if there was even a Bundesliga team in the city - there isn't.
Rooting for a foreign club is something that has always confused me. I have nothing against it, and I know there are many Europeans among us, but for those who have no connections to the clubs it seems a little arbitrary.

I'm in the same boat as Steve. But that doesn't stop me from picking up a bunch of shirts, hats, and jackets from other non-MLS teams. I just love the kits and colours of so many different teams, even if they are rivals. I must admit I do root for underdogs almost always, even if it's the richest club in the world (Real Madrid) vs a team like Barcelona.
Norwich City (and Simeon Jackson) caught my eye when they were still in the championship en route to their second straight promotion. I followed them fairly closely last year.
Wow, I follow a bunch for different reasons.
Newcastle United since '92-'93. Liked their jerseys, didn't know much about Newcastle itself but as the years went by I learned about the Geordies and the few that I've met have been quality. Plus it has never been boring to follow the Toon.
Barcelona since I can remember because one of Peru's best footballers Hugo "Cholo" Sotil played for them in '73. It helps that my gf and I really love the city as well.
Fortuna Dusseldorf since the 80s. It was the first Bundesliga team I learned about. I also wanted to follow a German club in order not to forget how to speak German. Family's from there. But they're not Fortuna fans.
Alianza Lima from Peru since I can remember. I do have a soft spot for my hometown team Sport Boys. Unfortunately Peruvian Primera Division is a joke.
Apart from the Vancouver Whitecaps, I also cheer for the Vancouver Whitecaps Residency.
(And Charlton, in Europe, but not with anything like the same passion. They're more a team I follow the fortunes of and wish well than a team I support.)
Chester FC, Manchester United. Manchester United I started supporting cos my dad supports them and he took me to my first game when I was 9, and Chester I support cos I'm from Chester.
I'm a proud supporter of amateur level football in Scotland, so I cheer for Rangers. :p
Arsenal. The way the NA and european schedules overlap means I'm in football year round. Top that off with a subscription to 442 and you've got it made.
Arsenal of London, and the German National Team.
Would there be anyone else to support?
The only other team that I love as much as the Whitecaps is Red Star Belgrade. And I'd also consider myself a Man U supporter.
Guangzhou Evergrande from the Chinese Super League, and Manchester United. I like Everton as well..
Should I be an ass and close this thread, seeing as there already is one? Nah. :-*
I'm mostly into supporter-owned clubs. Victoria Highlanders (30%). Fujieda MyFC in Japan (100%). Lewes FC in England (100%).
Oh, and Mipo Dockyard in South Korea, although they're owned by a massive, corporate behemoth!
Like Bobbo, I only keep an eye on clubs other than local ones (Vancouver and Victoria). Can't really claim to be a "supporter" if I can't attend matches in the flesh.
Lord_Bob said: Apart from the Vancouver Whitecaps, I also cheer for the Vancouver Whitecaps Residency.
Aren't they one and the same? If the former is a club, why should we assume it's only the top team?
parental background is dutch so I support Ajax, in England I'm an Arsenal supporter for the free flowing game of football. Nothing like watching crisp passing from one end to the other.
I got into Liverpool in the 80s following Grobellaar (I am sure I spelled this wrong) and then Beardsley. I followed and watched them quite closely for a long time. However, in recent years I have found their supporters becoming increasingly unbearable as they still try to say they are the most successful club in England and play the whole "everyone is against us" card too often. They do have a case for still saying they are the most successful when you add everything up in history, but it seems to be coming from a place of insecurity more than confidence. So, I have found my interest in them drift away the last few years.
Other than that, I support my local team for over 30 years and am happy with that.

Hajduk Split is my #1.

Given that the other thread was started in January 2011 and hasn't been posted on in over a year, no need to apologize.
And I might as well say it as I did in the other one ...
Sunderland. No connections there, just somehow got hooked in the Quinn/Phillips days and will be hooked for life. Worse still, I've passed it on to my boys.
Mild interest in Werder, because Bremen is the ancestral home, and FC Luzern, because I saw a match there in 1996.

Heh, I was just joking. The original thread wasn't clearly titled (like yours is), so you probably wouldn't have been able to find it anyway. I was only able to find it because I knew it already existed, and tried searching for the names of a few clubs that likely wouldn't be found in other threads.
I now see that I could have made an "ASSE" pun in my earlier post. How clueless of me.
Whitecaps and Werder Bremen are all I cheer for right now
Liverpool, Red Star Belgrade (both teams my dad supported), Bayern Munich, Sevilla (I enjoy how both teams play, although I haven't watched very many Sevilla games recently), and Chivas a little in Mexico.
Celtic for me.
My mother was born 1932 and raised in tough as nails Parkhead. Her father Francis Coyle was an Irish immigrant who had moved to Glasgow in his youth in one of the Irish invasions in at the turn of the 19th century of the poor looking for industrial work. Parkhead was poor, Irish and Catholic. They were all fodder for age old hatreds and brutal work. He forced her out though, to North America after the war. She was more or less indentured and had to work off her fare on arrival in Canada.
Francis only had one child and would bring her to many a game to stand with him in the terrace watching football and all kinds of indignities of the men swaying to the match, pissing down a newspaper so not to wet on a mates leg.
In England I follow three Clubs. In order Liverpool, AFC Wimbldon and Newcastle becasue I loved Beardsley and Kegan. In London I like Hammers, Palace and QPR mostly because Loftus Road is a ground every football fan should try and catch a game if they are passing through London. Craven Cottage is also fabulous. Usually you can actually get a ticket for most of the teams I've mentioned.
Liverpool is a special city. Fabulous working class traditions. A wonderful rivalry between to very old and established clubs. Its arguably the birthplace of modern rock and roll. Being a seafaring city its young men would come back from America with blues and R&B records and these would filter out into the city creating a vibrant music culture and business.
During the Thatcher years most all of the big trade unions in the UK were largely stripped of power and influence. Thatcher and her crony's went after pressmen, miners, teachers, seamen and dockworkers. Virtually all of these workers had there work re-organised or shut down.
But the Liverpool dockers don't not buckle to Thatcher or the new dock labour scheme and held on to their hard won gains for an extra decade or so. Until about 1995 and the Liverpool Dockers dispute which I became deeply involved in.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liverpool_dockers'_strike
I spent a fair bit of time in Liverpool working on maritime issues before and after that dispute. My time and connections with the city and her workers and people have brought me such an education in life, humor, warmth and even cunning.
LFC is but one of her teams and the one that I support, though I'd never cast an aspersion toward a Bluenoser. A lot of those are mates too.
Victoria Highlanders FC and Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
Other than that, I don't really "follow" or "support" any other team. I do, however, have one or more teams in most European and a few South American leagues that I "follow" in the standings. For what it's worth, your other team is one of the four French teams that I like and have jerseys for (the others being FC Nantes, Racing Club de Lens, and FC Girondins de Bordeaux). Here is (most) of my jersey collection:

Barca & Spain because they put the beautiful in the game. Just amazing to watch Xavi Hernandez work. Just sheer touch and control. While other teams just try to receive and then look to see who is open Spain and Barca know where the ball is going before it gets to them. Plan A, B & C all ready before the ball gets to them.
Then the real magic. When they don't have the ball they are constantly judging where they should be in position so when the person about to get the ball goes for plan A, B or C. What am I, and where do I have to be to be open for pass A, B or C. They play like chess grandmasters against wood pushers.
Just amazing to watch. Just sheer amazing. For 3 or 4 players capable of that most teams would sell their souls. Barca and Spain field 11, game in and game out.
Whitecaps since 1982 (I was about 7 when I discovered the Caps).
Started following the Manchesters in 1993. I remember being happy when United started winning titles, and very sad when the Citizens went down. My love for City grew when I saw the film "There's Only One Jimmy Grimble" - I love an underdog. I supported both Mans until Fergie started sounding like an arrogant prick everytime the subject of Citeh came up. In the last year especially, I grew sick of Fergie and have sworn off ManU.
But here's the interesting one: I just found out a month ago that my family is from Ipplepen and Torbryan, Devon, England. Closest club...(wait for it...wait for it...)
TORQUAY.
Yes my friends, Torquay. You have amongst you a one-month along Torquay supporter. I already need your moral support.
Besides the Caps I follow FC St. Pauli hence my avatar great club always listening to its supporters and the atmosphere at the Millentor Stadium rivals that of many large clubs. Also we have had a few supporters from Hamburg join us in the Southside for a few games in previous years and few us have been gone over to Hamburg to watch matches and as supporters go we have a great relantionship with their supporters.
Leeds United since 1964! I also have an interest in, Leewich.....sorry, I mean Norwich City, as my Dad followed them and their present midfield is made up of ex Leeds players. And of course the Whitecaps.
I lived with 2 guys from England in 98' and knowing absolutely nothing about international football I picked one team that I would follow. I wanted a team in blue and I picked Chelsea because it was from London and had a "cool" name. Later that year I was lucky enough to travel to England with them and they took me to a Chelsea game at Stamford Bridge. This was an epic event for me and I had never been exposed to chanting, singing and atmosphere like this and I was instantly hooked.
The other team I follow, but really loosely is Eastbourne Borough FC. Even though they are in the 9th division,I absolutely love the town of Eastbourne and I would move there if I had the money when I retire.
I used to play hockey in Hamburg, so I became a fan of the mighty HSV. Other than that, the whitecaps are the only team I really care about

I'm an expatriated Nottingham lad of the cloughy era. I was 8 when they brought home two back to back European Champions titles.

Are you getting your Eastbourne clubs mixed up? Eastbourne Borough are the big boys who play in the Conference South (level 6). Eastborough Town play in the Ryman South (level 8). The latter's ground itself is nothing special, but it's smack in the middle of town (near the train station) and surrounded by some fabulous architecture.

If you really want to slum it, there's even Eastbourne United AFC in the Sussex League Second Division (level 10).

My family's originally from Tiverton, so I tried to give Tiverton Town a go. Even went to one of their (away) matches, but just couldn't get into it. Realized once I saw them live that they weren't really my club.
Just be happy you're not from near Plymouth.
Manchester City.
One of the best video compilations I've seen in a while.
Juventus, hence the first part of my username (Bianconero). I've supported them since I was 4 when my Italian family introduced me to football, they showed me Juve matches because that's who my family supports.
I also occasionally watch my hometown team Reggina who are in Serie B and have been in Serie A a few times, but since I've lived in Vancouver longer than I did in Calabria, Whitecaps are my 2nd team behind Juve.

Yeah mixed up the divisions, though I keep a little eye on all the teams :)
This week? The women's Japanese national team.
Man Utd - I distinctly remember being around 8 and waking up early on Saturdays before my own matches to catch them on tv, back when there was really only one televised EPL game a week. The epic CL win and treble in 99 made me realize that they were the club for me...I still get goosebumps watching highlights from that final.
Benfica, ancestral ties, and they've moved some great players through their club.
I follow a lot of other teams in various leagues, primarily because I've visited the city/stadium. I also collect soccer scarves wherever I go, so one glance at the collection shows which teams I would like to see do well. I'd just like to note that I've been following the fortunes of PSG for about 6 years now, not a bandwagoner! Not that I'll be cheering them on, just generally rooting for them
Sheffield Wedneday. A family tradition since 1867. Come on you Blue and White Wizards...
Been an Arsenal fan since Anfield 89.
Oh and of course Edmonton FC - my other "hometown". They now play at Clarke Stadium instead of by the University. Need to get a bit more marketing though. Met some of the fans at the game earlier this season - they are a small group but love their soccer. Stopped in to their FO last summer and had a nice conversation with their staff - even bought a couple of shirts and scarves.. (wore the shirt to the Nutrilite game this season along with a caps scarf and hat).
Blackburn Rovers - Premiership Champions 1994-5. The only team to have won the FA cup in 3 consecutive years.
I was born at half time during a league cup match (in a hospital round the corner, not on the concourse) I went with my dad through the dark days of the old second. Then we came up and won the title when i was 18.

Always loved it too - Forest brought that out in early 70's - has stood the test of time for sure. Same with my team's logo (SWFC) came out around same time - both logos simple but recognisable without having the club name on the basic logo...

No shame in supporting Torquay. Nice to see someone not jumping a bandwagon because they are just about to win the league or FA Cup. There are some great lower league clubs that unfortunately (or maybe not) will always languish in the lower reaches of the FA. I have seen them a couple of times in the 70's.
