Looks like a solid pick-up that should add some needed depth to our back line.

Andy O'Brien. Anyone have him?

Andy O'Brien. Anyone have him?
He's pretty good. Good in the air. Demerit and him should pair up. then we will have the tightest defense in mls.
Maybe our Leeds fans could tell us what slowed him down last year? He played 30 times for Leeds in 2010/11.
Looks like some good CB depth now.
A Yorkshireman. Escape from Leeds - he should be eternally grateful to WCFC :P
Championship is a tough league - very physical. Will fit in nicely in MLS.
Welcome to Vancouver Andy - your gonna like it here (just in case you are reading this board).
2011–12 season
After picking up a hip injury during the 2011–12 pre-season he missed all the pre-season games, to return against his former club Newcastle United.[28] Then stepped up his recovery against Leicester City in a behind closed doors friendly.[29] The summer also saw O'Brien take the number 5 shirt after previously occupying the number 40 shirt.[30] O'Brien started for Leeds the opening day of the season as they crashed to a 3–1 defeat against Southampton, with O'Brien at fault for the second goal when his backwards header was converted by Adam Lallana.[31] He was given a torrid time against his former club Bradford City and was substituted to loud jeers in the second half with Leeds 2–1 down.[32] Leeds went onto win the game 3–2.[33][34] O'Brien dropped out of the Leeds squad for the following game on 13 August against Middlesbrough in a match Leeds lost 1–0.[35]
After nearly three months out of the side, O'Brien returned to the Leeds team due to the suspension and injury of Tom Lees and Darren O'Dea and helped Leeds keep a clean sheet against Leicester City on 6 November.[36] O'Brien was linked with a loan move to West Ham during November, however manager Simon Grayson revealed he wasn't looking to send O'Brien out on loan.[37]
After Leeds 2–1 win against Burnley on 19 November, manager Simon Grayson revealed post match, that O'Brien had come to him the day before the game and refused to play for Leeds ever again. Grayson subsequently stated that O'Brien's career at Leeds was now over due to his refusal to play, however, it later emerged O'Brien's refusal to play was down to the fact he was at time suffering from depression and was "not in the right state of mind" when he stated he would no longer play for Leeds.[38][39][40][41] After manager Simon Grayson was sacked, O'Brien played his first game for Leeds as a substitute against Coventry City.[42]
He was transfer listed by Neil Warnock at the end of the 2011–12 season and told to find a new club. [43] On May 4 2012, O'Brien lost his squad number, when the number 5 shirt previously occupied by him was given to new signing Jason Pearce.[44]
O’Brien, 33, comes to Whitecaps FC ...
Another aging player? Our 18 man squad is looking a little long in the tooth
im assuming this guy will be coming off the bench for us if so solid pick up and upgrade from mitchell...
Not a DP right?
JP82 said: nope not a DP...
k cheers - good player but certainly not DP value
I'm going to have to take back ALOT of abuse I've thrown at this guy over the years, especially when he dressed in green :(
No chance he's a DP. I'd make wagers on it. Sounds like good cover/competition for CB as he's a player who has played at the top levels. On the downside of his career, but still championship calibre. A solid player for when Bonjour eventually gets his 5th yellow and has to miss a game.
The best part of this, no more Rochat as a CB (please).
Once fit, he'll start opposite DeMerit and push Bonjour to the bench.
Fantastic signing, that only helps to strengthen the club and help fortify our chances at a deep playoff run.
I always thought when players are competing for spots it makes you work harder...it'll put demerit n bonjour on their toes cause they know if they start playing shtty u got a guy who now can come in while before they knew they were RM's go to guys and no one on the bench could replace them...i am not fan of his age but he brings alot of experience and the physicality of the championship is a bonus to the team. My only worry is that he seems abit on a downslope on his career and I hope that we picked him up cheap because of that
Just a little history...he was transfer listed by LUFC at the end of last season. Not quite good enough anymore for the championship. Unfortunately he suffers from depression and missed several games due to his illness. But I wish him nothing but good and improved health and hope he proves to be a good aquisition for the Whitecaps. Welcome to Vancouver Mr. O'Brien. :)>-
An Irishman? Already a suspicious signing. Surely we have not yet exhausted the pool of quality Scottish footballers?
The beautiful city and people of Vancouver should have nothing but positive effects on him.
Also, what an awful time to have a week off of MLS action.
What a great time to work with the new signing and get him closer to game shape ...
See? Every cloud has a silver lining.
ETA: I know you were only being tongue in cheek Elisant, but mental illness is about more than just sunshine and beautiful scenery. If O'Brien suffers from clinical depression he'll be dealing with it for the rest of his life.
Great signing by the looks of it. Just what the squad needs, some competition and depth at CB.
From the article it sounds like he's been in Vancouver for a couple days or so already, so I would say it's more than likely he will be there at the open practice tomorrow.
Wish I could attend that.
It'll be nice to see and meet him tomorrow at the open scrimmage.
Credit to the Rennie, Rachel and Bobby for bringing in this quality defender in a year the team has a chance to make a run.
Martin Bonjour will be feeling the heat a bit now.

Well, we've already got an English midfielder and a Welsh assistant coach... we're an Ulsterman away from a full house!
I would think it's DeMerit who's feeling the heat. O'Brien is the same age, has better experience, and is likely on less money.
Welcome Andy O'Brien

Demerit is on top form, while O'Brien is rusty, and struggled a bit through last season evidently. Bonjour has seen his play slip a bit lately.
Hopefully Martin bounces back and we can use O'Brien to keep Jay's minutes down a bit down the stretch.
The added depth is important.
Andy will be on TEAM 1040 at 11:30 with Matt Sekeres.
Good signing for the player and team. I really like this for next year if they qualify for champions league. Depth depth depth. think they are done?

Nope.
Now were talking! this team has got a serious, serious chance to go all the way here

He's an Englishman - born in Harrogate, Yorkshire - no matter what silly FIFA rules say otherwise.

If your name is "Andy O'Brien" you're Irish enough for me.
Hopefully this means that Rennie will start actually rotating people a bit at CB. he said knowing damn well that he won't
However, in terms of realistic hopes, hopefully this means the end of moving Rochat into a CB position.
We'll get to hear him speak soon enough. If he sounds like an extra from "All Creatures Great And Small", then I'll be slotting him into the "Yorkshireman" category.

Bah Gum - thart a reit un thee... if tha wonts owt for nowt tha mun do it for thi sen..
Finally a player that will understand my language... :))
Agreed. Rochat is a nightmare at CB, but surprisingly adequate in the the centre midfield holding role. Who knew ?

I’m not sure where this talk of Martin Bonjour's lack of form came from. Against Salt Lake, DeMerit’s arm was bumped upward as he went up for the ball, and conceded a penalty. Tough luck that referee missed something that camera didn’t. Bonjour was fouled on the second goal as the RSL player pushed him forward and down, using a hand on Martin’s shoulder for leverage. Jay DeMerit’s back pass was short, leading to Joe Cannon’s sending off.
Against San Jose, Bonjour easily dealt with Chris Wondolowski, nudging, jabbing, tackling, and such, despite carrying a yellow card for almost the entire match. From what I saw, he was our most important player that game. On the goal, Rochat took a tumble, may have been interfered with, but Wondolowski (still marked by Bonjour) played no part in it.
Against Los Angeles, Bonjour was covering Keane at the far post. Beckham was unmarked and scored on the near post. Villareal beat Koffie and DeMerit for the second goal. Bonjour was marking Keane again, who played no part in the goals.
Against Chicago, Bonjour was covering a man at the far post, the ball went in the near post. There’s not much he could do about a ball going top corner on the opposite post.
Against Toronto, Koffie and DeMerit failed to deal with the ball in the first goal. Bonjour was again covering a man on the opposite post. On the second goal, Bonjour was unable to win the ball from two Toronto players in the corner. They got it to the opposite side of the pitch, and Frings scored when Koffie wasn’t able to deal with the shot. Okay, I’ll give him partial responsibility on that one. The third goal was scored from the far post, Bonjour was covering a man who was past the near post.
Against Chivas and Colorado, we didn’t concede. So, in the past seven matches, he was fouled in the box, the referee didn’t see it, and a goal was scored. He failed to win the ball from two Toronto players at the corner, and it was crossed to another player, who was able to score. I don’t think this constitutes a poor run of form?
I remember him playing for Newcastle and for Bolton last year as well as for Leeds when he had his loan spell before signing permanently, he's a smart pickup by Rennie. Let's just hope that he can gain match fitness soon because I'm sure our defense are knackered out of their minds.

Great post. Bonjour has been rock solid the last few matches. He is excellent value for us.
Bonjour has been great this year and is a fantastic value signing, but I think it's a stretch to try and imply he's been better than DeMerit.
............age of player.........??

If you're talking about O'Brien, he's 33.

I think he's more consistent.
^ Both Bonjour and Demerit are CB in the upper echelon for MLS imo. Which one is better is a point we could agree to disagree on. Having both for less than 300K (thereabouts) is a bargain and an experience player to push (or rest) them is just what was needed. Seems like a good signing.
