Banner and Flags

    Hello All.

Due to the increase in advertising at Empire Stadium the fan banner space is somewhat limited.  We as fans are restricted to the 29-30" rail in front of row J.  I should warn that banners with swearing, racist, xenophobic cause, charity or ideological concern related materials will be taken down by security and might see you ejected from the stadium.   The club also wants everything hung up early so if you get your banner or flag on the rail please let me know and if you can get it to me I will then ensure that it is stored and put up before the match.  The one condition is that your banner does not break any of the rules, if it does then I'm the one responsible and I don't want that.

I do ask on a personal note that you do not cover other peoples or other group's banners. This would only lead to hurt feeling among each other, which I believe is counterproductive.

Below in Red,Yellow and Pink is pretty much the space we have to work with.

    Cheers,
    Brett

This might be ok to manage within our group but the football supporter culture is to bring flags of al shapes and sizes. I can see problems ahead with security.

The Club have asked for a supporters pledge but don't seem to want to give the general fan a place to hang their stuff.

What's the chances of getting to put banners on the turf behind the net at pitch level?

Any suggestions? Or does anyone have a collapsible flag pole they won't be using?

During the Cascadia Summit, I heard (2nd hand) that one of our members  yelled "F _ _K   U.S.A.", to either Portland or Seattle to the surprised look of half the players.
It is incompreshesible how anyone in our group could have done that !!

It was me that was yelling bout yanks not singing their anthem. I never said f--k USA at least I don't remember doing so. Funny how last year no one would give two tosses but now people do? Back on topic though are we allowed to store two sticks/ flags with the team since they're on the banned list.

You are allowed to bring in a flag pole but you will need to fill out a form making you responsible for whatever happens to it, regardless of who is waving it.

What is the relationship with St. Pauli?
I have seen a ton about them on this forum but nothing about the history of the relationship between the Southsiders and them (if there is one).

St Pauli was the first team I ever supported and their fans are world famous for their diehard support and chants. "We love you" is taken from them and they turn the Millerntor, their stadium into hell for away squads coming in. I would really like a "WELCOME TO HELL" banner in the southside, but that might be too close of a rip off.

Max "Footy" is also a big St. Pauli fan and has two friends from hamburg coming out tonight.

Let me speak personally and not as a BOD, and at the risk of saying something unpopular ...

Someone can correct me if I am wrong but I don't think there has there ever been an official 'partnership' with St Pauli.  I know many Southsiders are also fans of St Pauli, and some of their fans have visited here. But that same can be said about many Clubs. In fact I'm sure there are alot more Liverpool and Manchester United supporters in the Southside than St Pauli. Even just German clubs I know of Southsiders that support 1860, Bayern Munich, Schalke 04 and Berlin.   I know St Pauli has the whole sub culture thing as well, but do those views reflect the Southsiders as a whole?

So while I wouldn't discourage anyone hanging banners in the stadium, I think adding any 'official' recognition would require a board vote, or better a referendum.

218 1xx or 218 xx?  And Size? I ask because I'm having some very large banners made which fill most of the space directly behind the net.

  • Remember that banners/flags/etc. that are to be hung on the railings in front of row J can only be 30 inches tall, and have to be installed during the morning (8:45-11:00am) of the match at the stadium.  If you can't be there to help set up, you will need to give your stuff to piltdownman prior to matchday - tonight at the Southsiders party would be the perfect opportunity.

If it's large, and you plan to give it to piltdownman tonight, get in touch with him and make sure he has the ability to take it with him.

I can briefly comment on the fan tie in with the Southsiders it all started back in 2006 when a St. Pauli supporter named Klaus posted on our old fan forum we asisted him with info about the club music scene etc. then R2 and I went to Germany in 2006 he invited us to Hamburg he and many other St. Pauli supporters from the supporters group called "Basis" took R2 and I into the Millentor stadium let us walk around gave us a tour we shared many a beer and became good friends since then he has come to Vancouver a few times and another supporter named Holger visited last season and strangley enough we will have 2 more supporters from Hamburg visiting tonight at the Lamplighter ... so I can unoficially say we have become a place of interest for supporters of St. Pauli not so much a partership but as I have been told by many St. Pauli supporters " the southisders are always welcome in Hamburg"  So if you plan on visiting Hamburg let me know I will get you a contact its a great football town ... they live for their club and if your one of those that are tired with modern football clubs then have a look at St. Pauli the classic underdog team.

There is another thread started by me in the World section if you want to ask any other questions ..

If you are hanging anything on the railing it must have a maximum height of 30".  For waving the maximum height last year was 5m by 3.5m; however, I don't know if this has changed ... I do know that there is new rules involving flag poles in that they must be preapproved and you must sign a waver to bring them in.  You will NOT be able to bring them through the gate, as it sounds like the rules will require it to be brought to the stadium ahead of time.

I would be interested in waiving the St. Pauli flag, not hanging it, it's only 1m X 2m
  • Ours is almost done! It's 12 ft by 30" and I think it looks pretty good for a homemade banner! You still ok to grab it from 26th and main Brett? I haven't got your cell number any more?

I talked to the club again today.  They want all the banners up long before gates open. I will be at the stadium at 8am, but all the helpers will be there at 9am if you want something hung up you can drop it off to us.

As for flags, the poles need to be preapproved. Look for details on this on the Caps Website 'soon'. The Caps are working on a solution that is fun and safe for everyone.

  • I don't know if it was the club, or one of the southsiders, but I suspect it was us, as the banner was in place when we came into the stadium at 2pm, but before the game started our banner was apparently flipped over behind the boards for some reason.

I'll give you the history of that banner.
I went out and bought all the fabric, paints, and then spent an evening planning it out. I then spent two evenings painting the banner, then three evenings sewing the thing, all in all, it probably cost us a hundred bucks to make.

We then drove from the okanagan at 6am to make sure we could get our banner into the ground before the cut off time. And some fucking prick flips it over behind the boards so no one can actually see it? Go fuck yourself you selfish prick.

That is all. I've vented enough.

Too bad. I was wondering where your banner was.

On a separate note, after seeing the advertising that was put up along the wall, I really don't think it is going to be an issue to have banners that are taller than 30". I'm going to bring mine next game.
  • Yup, let's get more banners up, we should be taking over that end of the ground

  • Hey Brett, if ours can go in front of 216, somewhere where it isn't in the way of people banging on the boards (I'm guessing that's why it got flipped over) that would be great. People should respect the banners though.
