With his nose for goal, he should do well here. Would love to see him play.

This is one thing that MLS provides me that no other sport does.....the enjoyment I get from seeing the league as a whole get better.

The transformation from 2006 to now is astounding.

On the main I agree with this comment. However, I would be much happier if this player was moving to Portland or Columbus or somewhere else other than NY and LA and to a lesser extend more recently ... to Vancouver.

I agree with Lefty. It's good to see big names come in but untill all the clubs in the MLS can obtain them, the legue as a whole will still be second tier.

Ok, what's the deal here? When I made a post about signing European players, someone ripped me stating, The MLS does not pay transfer fees! The report here is that NYRB is paying 1 million pounds for the transfer. Well, what is it then?

  • I'm guessing the league doesn't but I'm sure the owners do. And that's why it affects the cap hit as well.

Same deal everywhere - ManU, Chelsea and now man City get all the good players in BPL.

    Barca and Real in Spain.

AC, Inter and Juve in Italy.

I think in that thread I posted how MLS deals with transfer fees. The fees count towards the dalary cap, so they only really so it with DPs

  • The thing that annoys me is that Tim stated that "he wanted to give something back to the game in Australia"

Then goes and signs for NYRB not in the A-League and he's not exactly getting any younger.

It's awesome for the MLS and I hope he does well of course but I'd love to see him back here in his hometown of Sydney

Did I read something about him trying to negotiate a deal with A-League a few months ago where he was trying to get a percentage of the gate for all games he played (or was I imagining it)?

I guess he was too greedy & that fell through?

  • That was Harry Kewell as far I know. But he pissed off back to England after on season.

Cahill was rumored to be off to the Middle East but made a better choice in coming to the MLS

  • Ah my mistake.

Harry Kewell pulled that stunt as well (pretending he cared for the A-League).

In fairness though, it seems the A-League is in real straights, whereas MLS seems fairly healthy.

  • Yea the A-League is on struggle street, clubs closing down after two seasons, new ones popping up. I really envy the MLS at times.

My brother-in law - who is a Bombers/Heart man - said that the AFL really doesn't like the soccer market at all and want them dead basically - even if they play mostly 'out of season' and that they have been trying to sabotage the teams/stadiums and WC bids....dunno if it's true

There's probably a degree of truth in that. In the run-up to the WC bidding process, there was a huge row, because there were allegations that FIFA wanted all other major sports shut down during the World Cup, and would want AFL teams out of their stadiums close to a month before games began.

I know there's a lot of bitterness between the two sides, no doubt about that.

And, lest I miss the chance ... Cairn the Bombers!

To be fair, the A-League isn't all that far behind where MLS was at a similar stage. That 2000-2003 period was a pretty dire one for MLS.

Yea there is some truth to it and with the NRL also don't like the soccer market. Nobody but soccer people in Australia like soccer. Football Federation Australia wanted to have a month off of AFL and NRL so they could host the world cup but, the other codes weren't to happy about it because NRL has their showpiece event on at the same time as the world cup. Both codes wanted compensation from soccer for this.

But in the end it didn't matter because we only got one vote :(

  • Can't say I'm surprised with Cahill's name being mentioned. He was linked to Asia not too long ago but played down the talks. He should do well at New York if they were to sign him, he's good wee player still.

That's the tri-fecta, a baseball player, a hockey player, and a football player to New York in the same day.

Considering what has happened the last year, PSG are the ones buying the best Serie A players. ;)
