I've been drinking a lot of Northwest style IPA lately - spending way more than I'd like on Fat Tug, Red Racer and Double Amnesiac, etc. I thought I might go the cheapskate/U Brew route and give that a go. Wondering if any of you know of any U Brew places in the Burnaby area where I could make some IPA - and not some crap version of Alexander Keith's mislabeled nonsense.

So far my experiences with U-brews is that every beer has the same blandish flavour to it, regardless of how it's made.
learn to home brew, there's a great scene here in the lower mainland. save some money and make some friends: vanbrewers.ca/
I second that. Learn to brew it is well worth it! Me and a friend of mine brew our own and are currently sipping on one hoppy well made IPA. Takes about 6 weeks from start to drink but you get 5 Gallons out of a standard batch (you can make as much as you want, just need to equipment )
Quality u brew. You can only have two of those words in the same sentence. Pick which two you will
There's no chance any u brew would make you an IPA that tastes anything like those beers. Avoid. Their only purpose is to make barely palatable beers to get drunk on cheap. For some people, that's fine, but not for someone who actually likes the taste of beer. go down to Dan's home brew shop on Hastings and pick up a starter kit. You will be making tasty IPAs in no time.
While I agree with most of the above comments, I was pleased with the bitter that I bottled at West Coast U brew on clarke. The nice thing about brewing at home is that you can do smaller batches, so if you don't like it you don't have to drink 12 cases of the stuff. and you'll save even more doing it at home.
The bitter at Westcoast is a good drinker.

Or better yet, go to Bosagrape in Burnaby for better service and selection.
I home brew in Australia and we have a massive selection of types of to brew. My personal favourite is a Pale Ale but there's also one called Canadian Blonde that is really nice and tasty

Been hearing good things about Bosa, will have to check it out.
Much better selection of grains (50+ as opposed to ~20) and their hops tasted and smelled much fresher. My friend and I are very excited about the batch we just brewed last night because of this.
bosagrape is pretty bad ass, if you're near Royal oak it's a must. Dan's used to be the only game in town but it's pretty grungy by comparison.

I believe you can get that here at Save-on-foods!
you can get a pretty good can/extract set up at Save-on and the stuff will pay for itself in a couple of brews. Start saving howe sound bottles!
It's been about 2 years since I've done a home-brew, so I figured I might as well do one tonigh. Making a Dunkelweizen. Got a pale ale modeled after Sierra Nevada's to do next week.
