Matchday Info
TV: Sportsnet ONE

Vancouver Whitecaps FC (7W-5D-4L, 26 pts, 3rd place MLS West)
Colorado Rapids (7W-1D-8L, 22 pts, 5th place MLS West)
6:30 pm Kickoff - Away match viewing at Doolin's
Should be a good game especially after the catastrophe of the last one. If we win, we'll have the same amount of points at the halfway mark as we did all of last season. 2011 seems so nonexistent now.
Also Ryan (YaBeauty) will be there, as he's home from Australia for a vacation
I think he's coming to Doolins?
He's coming to Doolins:

Yes, he'll be at Doolins, sorry if I didn't make that clear.
So feel free to introduce yourselves to him
To be fair to Dave Gantar, he usually only ruins Montreal - Vancouver matches. He can't really ruin a Colorado Rapids match because those come pre-ruined for our convenience.
Wooooow, Rochat is moved up to midfield, Harvey fills in, Robson and Hassli in...who saw that coming?
Edit: and Le Toux is on the bench...
WhitecapsFC Starting XI: 4-2-3-1 right-to-left:Cannon; Lee, Bonjour, DeMerit, Harvey; Koffie, Rochat; Robson, Mattocks, Chiumiento; Hassli
WhitecapsFC Substitutes: Knighton, Le Toux, Nanchoff, Mitchell, 31.Russell Teibert, Klazura, Camilo
robson with a long crack....wow
Gantar... distracted? Holy hell he's letting a lot go.
Can we change the drinking game to drink everytime security hassles #CapsonTour? We'd be plastered by kickoff!
Who wears short shorts?
Joe Cannon wears short shorts...
AND wears the same colour jersey as Colorado!

IT'S OVER!
Good professional display on an away game at altitude - the sort of performance you need in places like Denver and Mexico City.
Decent debut for our new DP. Of course he was going to start with Davidson suspended and both Thorrington and Watson injured. Robson seemed to whine a bit about getting tackled, and he did give up some possession. Hopefully that improves with his game fitness.
MOTM to Joe Cannon for all those saves in a shutout. How the hell is he allowed to wear all-burgundy when the opponents are wearing maroon? Bizarre.
I liked Alain Rochat better in CM than I ever do at CB.
Our back line was very fortunate that Conor Casey didn't score from several chances (and what could have been a PK called on Bonjour).
Martin Rennie's hair didn't look as dishevelled as usual. Altitude?
Very tough place to play for visiting teams, historically. Brutal heat. Wacky lineup. That's an outstanding win.
Okay I honestly don't know if we deserved 3 points but I sure as hell will take them. Oh yea Mr Robson welcome to MLS officiating. Absolute crap reffing tonight. At least it was about 50-50 bad none calls.
Great bunker job after Mattocks scored. Quite the calm poacher. Hassli had his best game in a long time. I really like him paired with Darren. Mattocks can finish but can't pass to save his life. Hassli not only completed a lot of passes but held the ball up great.
The whole team played a really great road game with 3 of our defenders getting my votes for MOTM. Harvey, Bonjour, JD along with both Rochat and Gersh in front of them to really clear a lot.
One thing I've noticed about Rennie's formations is that no matter what they are on offence they collapse back to a 4-5-1 on defence. Only twice tonight did I see a 4-4-2 and that was because both forwards had run their bag off.
In the end our keeper came up big when he had to and theirs didn't. Our forwards scored on our single chance and theirs didn't on multiple chances. Our defenders can handle the ball eons better than theirs!

Horrific game to watch. Passing was atrocious. Ref was not calling anything (which can sometimes be good but missed a lot tonight). Steal of a 3 points. And yes, that was Nanchoff on the pitch.
Am I the only one who thought Gantar wasn't completely shite today? Let an awful lot go, but seemed consistent in what he allowed and what he called.

Yea like I said above at least it was 50-50 in the bad non-calls department. Still crap reffing but at least it was even crap. I guess that is the best we can hope for with the USSF/CSA appointed refs.

No, I also thought Gantar was okay and appropriately hands-off for the most part. I also thought Jordan Harvey was man of the match. This was a weird game.
dhawk11 said: Dont know if anyone noticed but didn't Mr Cannon look alittle funny with the really short shorts? hahaha, I think some body shaves or waxes, hahah baby smooth and pale.
Anyways, it was a great game on both sides of the field, and why did mattocks get the yellow card??
Nasty bit of time wasting. Took a "shot" well after the whistle. Well-earned, I thought.
I managed to catch the second half on 1410. Schadd and Norman actually commented on the short shorts. Joe can play in a thong if it helps us win for all I care.
Robson, Chiumiento, Hassli combo will be deadly by seasons end. Hopefully it comes together just in time for playoffs, you can certainly tell Robson's game sense is a little bit elevated but he did take some of the opposing players for granted. I'm sure he'll be even more prepared for the next match.
I'm sorry to say, but once LeToux came on there was a huge drop off on total team pass completions and thats was not very good to begin with. LeToux's passing and creativity stinks, hes only good as a chase dog and a point man on this team.
Hassli's overall performance was a breath of fresh air for me, his link up play and the way he held up the ball were fantastic tonight, deserving of another start for sure.
Interesting and surprisingly effective line-up tonight. I guess Jun M Davidson figures more importantly in this line-up than I gave him credit for. it will be good to see him back in the middle and Rochat back out on the flank.
One thing I didn't like tonight from Hassli was how he watched Mattocks score with his hands in the air, celebrating. He would have looked pretty stupid if Mattocks put the ball wide on the right when he could have hustled and tapped it in. Maybe I'm being overly critical, but when the goal is at your mercy is the worst time to stop running and pull out a bag of popcorn.
Whos the Rapids player in Depends???? oh, its Joe......
I thought we really lacked composure in possession. Lucky 3 points. Hoping we can get 5-6 more points on this road trip, and close out July strong. If we survive this brutal July, soccer not the weather, then we really have a shot at the playoffs!!!!!

I think he was trying to indicate to the ref that it was a fair ball... you know how opposing players always put up their hands when they're "innocent"
The problem is that, and I agree with you about Hassli, you never know what you're gonna get with the big man. He still on many occasions tonight sat on the pitch and cried like a little baby after being taken down.
Okay Eric, we all saw the foul, the ref didn't call it! Get the fuck up man!

This is a bit harsh IMHO.
Nobody goes to Colorado and has a good game, you're sucking wind from the word go. The ball travels differently in the air at a higher altitude and hangs up in the air more.
The passing sucked, but the slick pitch gives the advantage to the home side up there, the CAPS weren't lucky, as much as I thought they managed the game pretty well.
They were never going to keep the Rapids from getting solid looks at goal, in my view it was always going to be that type of game, and I guess Rennie thought so too with the line-up and tactics he had tonight.
where is teibert? i certainly think he has deserved a start over nanchoff after watching the reserve games. but a good team win. hassli did well to hold up the ball and pass off to mattocks. robson had the odd touch what a shot in the first 15 but looked tired with the pace, heat, and altitude. i wish sportsnet showed more or the travelling support, including my bro, but maybe not their feed.

I agree, he was consistent
I loved Bazza's interview after the match.
To the players giving him attention - "bring it on"!
Match Highlights
Darren Mattocks 1-0 Goal
So we've passed last season's point total. Not a bad first half to the season.
Just watch the highlights on Sportsnet...they said middlesbrough was an EPL team, and that Robson is our 3rd DP. wtf.
Technically he is the 3rd Caps DP ever.
MacEwen sank to a new low last night with that six seconds of silence in calling the goal.

That was bad although I think he was waiting to see if the goal counted or not.
I also liked the part where the Rapids player missed the "bike and tripped over the curb." Which actually meant that he missed a bicycle kick and fell over.
haha I thought I was the only one..when Mattocks scored with the silence I thought he was offside so akward--I couldn't even celebrate..TSN has such a more superior soccer broadcasting team...Luke Wileman is golden...next time its on Sportsnet I am muting it and listening to Schaad for the commentary..

Agreed - tough to watch but great result.

I was very impressed with Robson. He gave away possession a couple of times in interesting spots but I think that was a function of over-confidence or timing being off. I like how fast he plays and it seemed to be contagious with the rest of the Caps. He passes and moves ... almost shifts rather than moves... you can tell he knows what he's doing when he'll take a couple of steps backwards (off the ball) to pull his defender into a space that he wants to occupy and he'll move into that space at the right time (ie. when the man on the ball is ready to deliver to him).
MOTM to Joe Cannon for all those saves in a shutout. How the hell is he allowed to wear all-burgundy when the opponents are wearing maroon? Bizarre.
I was thinking the same thing. And the shorts just looked weird on him. I think his issue is he pulls his pants up to his bellybutton - I'll give him a pass as he's old.
I liked Alain Rochat better in CM than I ever do at CB.
Didn't notice.
Our back line was very fortunate that Casey Connor didn't score from several chances (and what could have been a PK called on Bonjour).
Does he play for the Broncos in the offseason - the guy is massive.
Martin Rennie's hair didn't look as dishevelled as usual. Altitude?
He did look weird with a short sleeve dress shirt and slacks.
It was brilliant when ALL the team came over at the end of the match. Their smiles were infectious

I bet it was.
Complete difference from 12 months ago when in Salt Lake not one single player (who played) came over to the 50 or so of us.
