The 'caps traded their returning player allocation spot to the Union so they could grab old Chicago star and Mali international Bakary Soumare. I believe the 'caps now lose that top allocation spot and will be last in line to claim Bocanegra if he re-enters the league. I actually wish they would have just signed Soumare, who was very good in this league and is still young-ish. They got allocation money so maybe they have somebody else in mind.

Jonathan Leathers?
Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today that they have acquired Philadelphia Union's first-round selection in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft, allocation money, as well as the Union's 12th position in the league’s allocation ranking, in exchange for Vancouver's second-round pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft and the 'Caps first position in the MLS allocation ranking. Per league and club policy, the amount of allocation money was not disclosed.
"There were a number of factors involved in this trade, including our current and future needs, the players available through allocation ranking, as well as the strength of next year's MLS SuperDraft," said Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie. "In the end, we are very pleased with the assets we've acquired, as allocation money is an important asset in our league, and we have seen the value that a first-round pick can bring in either a quality player or something that can be turned into assets down the road."
I think that's a pretty good piece of business given it's the #2 pick if the season ended today. There's usually a pretty good player there.
Oh man it's so refreshing to see an organization that knows what they are doing! I can see us being a contender for a long time if we keep making these types of decisions.
If the season were to end today, we would have dealt the 1st selection in the Allocation Ranking (U.S. National Team players and former MLS players) for the 12th selection; the 35th selection in the MLS SuperDraft for the 2nd selection; and allocation money (allows you to exceed the salary cap). Not a bad bit of business I’d say. If we want Bocanegra or any other current U.S. National Team player or former MLS player, we can make a deal with New England the way Seattle did with Montreal earlier in the season.
So are we using the allocation on Hargreaves? :)

For the record, in order from most recent: Darren Mattocks, Darlington Nagbe, Tony Tchani, Sam Cronin, Brek Shea, Bakary Sumare (!), Medhi Ballouchy, Brad Guzan, Chad Marshall, Ricardo Clark.
That's 10 years, every guy on there, with the partial exception of Tchani, is either a full-time starter in MLS, or was before moving overseas.
I wouldn't say a high draft pick is "very" valuable. I'd say it's more valuable than the sort of mediocre washed-up player you usually get with a good allocation placement.
Looks like a decent asset move.
Solid move, as mentioned we could swing a deal with NE to reagin the top allocation position - I assume a deal would involve one of or many forwards?

Please please please have another Chad Marshall available for us next year's draft.
Of course, we could then just trade that acquired spot to get back up the allocation rankings.
Could be good trade bait.
If Bocanegra comes back this year, this will look like a bad idea.
If he doesn't, then we're getting something for nothing.
Hopefully the Caps know something about Bocanegra's plans that the rest of us don't know.
The lower the Union end up, the higher Super Draft pick we'll get.

No, it just effects the draft pick
I wouldn't think it would make a difference to the allocation money, however the draft order is reverse order of league position. So if the Union somehow fall behind TFC and come in last we would get first pick; however, if TFC (and everyone else) stays on current form and ends up last and the Union come in 18th the Whitecaps would get second pick.

If we really wanted another central defender, Soumare might have been just as good a choice. He's six years younger than Bocanegra, would probably be cheaper, and was one of the top three or four central defender in MLS when he left for France in 2009 ... right after getting in a fight with then-Chicago coach Dennis Hamlett.
It makes me wonder if we really never have been interested in Boca, and would end up trading his rights if he did want to come back.
Should we go after this keeper? not saying cannon and knighton are bad, but this guy is talented. http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2012/08/07/us-goalkeeper-robles-signs-mls-deal-awaits-destination
