It's anthem singer Marie Hui's birthday today. I propose we sing her happy birthday. I've checked with the club and they can make it work, immediately after she sings the anthems. I want to genuinely know what everyone thinks.
Here is one thought that probably is shared by a good portion of people:

Singing Happy Birthday in public places is silly and overwrought. There will be 19,000 people there and only 365 days in the year. Are you going to sing it for everybody? There are probably 2 or 3 Southsiders with birthdays today, too.
Leave singing Happy Birthday to close family and friends. And tell restaurants to knock it off, too.
Okay, silly rant over. Resume your happiness.
I generally agree. I don't even like the song. But no one is suggesting we sing it to everybody, every Southsider or every fan in the building every single game. That would be silly and overwrought. But Marie sings to us and everyone else every game. Singing back to her seems like a nice thing to do.
Additionally, it would stand out from our normal singing.
On the downside, see above, plus: We may just get drowned out by the cheering after the anthems. Most people wouldn't know why we were singing, unless the club announces something and we get it out there via twitter etc, which would then alert Marie that we're doing it.
Thoughts?
I can't put my finger on why, but I just cringed at the thought of the announcement, Sue, where previously I thought singing to her was a good idea.

Same.
I don't know, I think Sue's idea is a good one. It's something and the whole stadium can join us in. If they only hear us without the announcement by the time they figure out what is going on the song will be over. Or did we just want it to be our little exclusive thang?

Yeah, I was wondering if it was a little too "rah rah," Jumbotron-ish but thought I'd throw it out there. I'm not going to be there anyway so I'm not bothered either way. :-P
Wasn't able to go to the game, curious if this happened?
We did, but not in large enough numbers for her to hear us. I later rani other on the concourse and tried to buy her a beer. She was a bit creeped out at first until she recognized me.
it happened... heard a faint noise that sounded vaguely like the Happy Birthday song, but not one that can be heard from the benches where she went after she sang...
I'm sure she appreciates the sentiment though. It's the thought that counts.
I messaged her and tweeted her, and she appreciated it tons.
You guys are creepy.
Because wishing happy birthday to someone you appreciate is creepy? What are family holidays like for you?
Brenton said: Because wishing happy birthday to someone you appreciate is creepy? What are family holidays like for you?
Yeah, because someone you tweet and see (from a distance) once a week singing and anthem at a professional sporting event is the same as "family".
I believe the qualification was "someone you appreciate", not family.
Brenton said: What are family holidays like for you?
You drew the comparison, not I.
Family is an example of someone you may appreciate. I could as easily have said "your co-workers" or "some random person in a bar who looked like they were having a fun time so you joined in signing for them" or even "that player on the pitch who you see (from a distance) once a week so you sing some chant at them".
Singing happy birthday to Ms. Hui can't be that much different than chanting for a player.
I'd sing happy birthday to her, but it would be all breathless and sexy like M.Monroe did for JFK. Not creepy at all.

I'd pay to see that... But just don't dress like Marylin
I'm dragging this back up simply because it's the best Marie Hui thread, and my comment doesn't quite rise to having thread status on its own.
I'm often critical of people singing the US anthem. I think the song is a bit rubbish to begin with, and gets made worse by people who think they have to "interpret" it. But Marie Hui nails it - no muss, no fuss, just a straightforward, top-notch performance of the song. A bit more impressed by it every week, and wish everybody sang it to her standard.
She did the same on Wednesday.

Agreed, and same for Oh Canada. Too many warblers, singing like a southern-US black baptist choir, warbling and stretching vowels into three or four sylablles until it sounds like garbage, and singing too slowly to be sung along to. These anthems are marches, and should be sung like that, so that the average person can join in. Hui is not as bad as some, but she still warbles.
Totally with SAFC Yank. Marie is no fuss no muss, just gets on with it, gets the songs sung and we can all get on with enjoying the match.
You wanna hear painful anthem singing. Take in a Vancouver Giants game where the gal (Natasha something or other) they bring in for at least half the home games sounds like she is on American Idol - the Nashville Edition. Fake twang, fake eye lashes, fake hair, but she stands on a pretty fair pair of pins.
Marie is top class.
No one should complain about her, she is simply the best
Ja vol! Zer is to be no dissenting opinions!
Wer nicht einverstanden ist sollte erschossen werden
I should have known there was trouble when Chris asked me to call him "Southsideführer".

One of my all-time faves. Enjoy.
If only that's all it took to get rid of anthem singers . . . :)
I make a joke post, and it gets a negative four. Detailed explanation, short quip - there's no pleasing the haters. At least Chris Deal, Ben, Brenton and Slamo have a sense of humour.

The secret, I find, is to pretend you don't care whether you're + or -. (Even though of course you totally do; everyone does.)

Yeah, I have to remember to login the laptop once in a while to plus post - sometimes Im plusing post that are months old - then I feel like quoting it and making a comment so the OP knows I liked it only to realize I'm on their ignore list. Man it's a complicated world.

If you scroll to the bottom of the mobile page, there is a tiny icon for full site. I hit it by accident once and thought my operating system magically upgraded itself. This is on a Samsung Galaxy so if it doesn't work on yours, feel free to minus away.

Best laugh I've had all day - and a good example of why I can't bring myself to "Ignore" anyone.
