Based on recent performance, Darren Mattocks has climbed from "not ranked" to no.2 in the MLS Rookie Rankings.
Some will say Mattocks' jump from honorable mention to No. 2 is a bit much. Fair enough, but you can't deny you lean forward in anticipation when the Jamaican gets on the ball. Yes, his ejection against the Rapids was as foolish as they come. Still, the Vancouver starlet could very well run away with the rookie scoring title if given the chance.
Mattocks previously dropped to no.3, but climbed back up to no.2 for the Week 18 Rookie Rankings
His most recent goal may not have been pretty – Drew Moor is still kicking himself about that failed clearance – but it was a winner. That's all Mattocks and Vancouver should care about at this point in the year. With four goals already, Mattocks is just one behind C.J. Sapong's total from a year ago. He still has to find a way to stay on the field, however, as the cards just continue to pile up.
I imagine he'll be number one when they factor in his two goals against Toronto, especially the second, which may be the goal of the season.
Mattocks to the top for week 19.
There has been change aplenty in Mattocks' neck of the woods. Sébastien Le Toux is gone, replaced by speedster Dane Richards. Kenny Miller joined Barry Robson as a Designated Player, meanwhile the Whitecaps' third DP, Eric Hassli, seems rooted to the bench. Mattocks just keeps scoring, though, giving him the honor of replacing Ryan Meara atop the Rookie Rankings.
Mattocks stays at #1 after week 21
For most of 50 minutes against Real Salt Lake, Mattocks found opportunities few and far between. But it only takes a sliver of space for the young Jamaican to punish you, and Nick Rimando found that out the hard way. The veteran goalkeeper came out to smother a ball over the top, but Mattocks won the race, scored his seventh goal of the season and cemented his place at No. 1.
Mattocks slips to #2 after Week 23
Mattocks helped the 'Caps an important 2-1 victory at Real Salt Lake a week ago before leaving for his first taste of international duty with Jamaica, playing 36 minutes as a substitute. Although his production has dropped a bit recently, one goal and one assist in Vancouver's last six, Rennie will certainly lean on the 21-year-old down the stretch.
Chicago Fire's Austin Berry is now at the top.
