So the Jokers on Team 1040 think that one of our two best players is on the block, I personally would be dismayed if we do this and have players like Barbara around who have not contributed. What do you guys think?
it's just you. the guy works hard and had a rough go with the 2 yellows. he's young and full of confidence at the moment.
As for Hassli and Camilo: It would appear that Rennie likes to play attacking combinations rather than just individuals in form. This might mean that when Mattocks or Davide slow down, we'll see Camilo and Hassli back in...although Hassli-Davide doesn't seem too bad either
Ok it's just me I guess I don't really care for him, but as long as he has our shirt on his back I will cheer him on, I hope he truly learned a lession today because from where I was sitting he earned those two yellows.
On current form DC with anyone seems to be good. Dede is working his ass off game in and game out. Great to see. I call it the "Letoux effect".
I would hate to see either go. Right now we have a lot of attacking options and I don't see anything wrong with that. The fact that several of our forwards are playing wing effectively is a great thing and shows their versatility. Mattocks & Hassli are the 2 odd men out who seem to only play forward.
I think Team 1040 is on crack.
Yep, those guys figure in addition to Robson joining the team its imminent we will land another top notch defender.
The team has allocation money, an international spot once Boxall is dropped.
So if they can trade Hassli and Camillo this gives them loads of financial flexibly to land Bocanegra who is in Vancouver in less then two eeks to pick up a piece of DeMerit art. Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives

Moved to Whitecaps MLS. Please post new threads in the correct section.
I have been "off" on Eric since last fall; I think that is well known on this board. I would have no problem with him being traded. With him on the roster he has value as a 2nd half sub, but at this point he is a 5 minute player with Rennie and it is not looking good for him. I do think he has plenty of value as a sub if he can bag us a goal from time to time. But, he will not be a 10 goal starter anymore. He had his half season run last year and that is the best we got.
But, for you to rip on Mattocks like that seems wierd. What makes him unlikable? Can you give us more details on how you came to this opinion. Yes, he dove today and gave a really bad tackle. But, your words on him seem way out of touch. Please explain.
Hey Old Fan, I guys it's just me. He just rubs me the wrong way, he come across as cocky and a bit of a glory hound. But in saying that I have been completly wrong about players before and hope he is super for us for many years to come.
Put the idea in context ... the discussion started when Corazzin said he wouldn't start either of them Wednesday with Mattocks out. That led into a discussion of whether or not they were on the block. And while I really like Hassli, and give Camillo full credit for what he's done here, its a fair question. It would be hard to move a DP, but you might be able to move Camillo, and given that Dede and when healthy, Salgado, are in front of him, getting something for him might be a decent shout.
And Solkowski also said something to the effect of Barbara being Rennie's one big mistake since arriving.

Interesting. How can he say he's been a mistake? He hasn't done any good or bad yet, as far as I can tell, other than looking really dangerous for those 10 minutes against FC Edmonton. And by the way Lawman, it's Team 1410, not 1040. The guys on 1040 are probably still too busy talking about David Booth shooting a bear and the Canucks' 28th round draft pick to talk about the Whitecaps.
1040, 1410 my mistake, they all start sounding the same after awhile. The idea is in context, they talked about the possibility. Since this Discussion board is about talking all things Cap's, then it needs to be talked about even though I hate the idea of letting either go.
we will see Hassli or Camillo start next game I think, cause Mattocks will have his suspension.

Wierd comment by Solkowski.... hard to say if Barbara was a mistake since he hasn't played any significant time yet!
HIS BIGGEST mistake was burying Long Tan.. .I swear!!!!!

I know what you are saying about cocky. But the guy is 21 and the last few years he has been surrounded by people praising him to no end. It's understandable when young highly touted players get cocky. It would bother me if he was 24 or 25 moreso than if he is 21 and a rookie.
Whether he is cocky or not, he is performing and will be a major player in the run to the playoffs.
As for your topic, while I would not shed a tear to see Eric traded, I think it would be a poor idea. We need that striker depth; and he still can bag a goal here and there in a crucial late game moment. We would regret it if we don't get a replacement for him.
After thinking about it, I think Camilo is a far better trade option. Throw in Atiba for good measure too.
Why Barbara was a mistake ...
Brought him in even though he was hurt and it was clear we had a ton of options in those positions already.
Gave him a contract at roughly $88,000. That's double the salaries of Tan or Nguyen.
Now that he's here, he can't get into the 18, even though we're missing Salgado and Harris.
Solkowski said it almost tongue-in-cheek, but it probably is Rennie's biggest mistake. That says something about how well Rennie has done. Barbara should have been brought in as a trialist, rather than a signing, although the fact he was injured would have made that difficult.

Camilo is 23, do you really want to give up on this guy so fast?
I'd say Camilo because I think you can get the most in return for him. You have to give up value to get value. The better question is whether we have needs that require it to be done. An experienced depth guy at center back would seem to be the main need. I like Mitchell, but get the sense Rennie doesn't share that opinion.
I would think Harris is the man on the bubble. He's in his second season and the injury bug won't leave him. he's frail. Yeah, last season he scored some right place, right time goals but i find him to slow up any Caps attack. Nice guy...but we're talking football. Barbara fills a depth spot.
As for Salgado, based on his play, his own comments and Rennie's, he's a winger who can play striker if needed. I wouldn't count him as a striker any longer.

A little info on Barbara. He was injured on the first day he was in camp, saw when it happened. He was out of shape when he came in and tried to push hard which may have caused the strain. It was re-injured during the reserve game against LA. Talked to him on Thursday and he was very frustrated. Tired of rehab and wants to get on the pitch. Feels his season is waste so far.
And it's disappointing because he's a skillful player, at least in my opinion.

Thanks for the correction on the injury timeline. That explains some of it, perhaps "signed him although he was hurt" would be more accurate. I'd stand by No.2 & 3 - the injury might explain yesterday, but its the fourth straight game he's not been in the 18.
I can certainly understand his frustration, I don't question his commitment or desire to contribute.
I hope they are not on the chopping block. Both of them give the coach options for different styles and skill sets that can mix up the attacking dynamics. As long as they put the team in front of themselves and understand that the playing time is going to be spread around, I think they should stay.
With that being said I do not see the day to day operations of the club or the larger team picture so if they did get moved for whatever reason, I would have faith and trust it was to better the team.
Defence wins championships. We have little depth on our back line. We have depth at forward. Someone has to leave in order for someone to come in, both for salary cap and roster size limits. If my addition is correct, that someone would have to make $200,000 or more in order to keep us cap compliant. I have a bad feeling that Eric picked a bad time to settle down.
On post game show corrazin was saying one of the youngsters would get a start on wednesday instead of camillo or hassli. He was mentioning clarke and nano. Hassli looked pretty bad off the bench last night unfortunately.
Camilo has to be kept. He's 23 and one of the most dangerous players in the league on his day. I would be shocked if he does not start on Wednesday, and if he doesn't that means that something bad has happened between him and Rennie. Despite his bad game in New England, I don't mind Mitchell as the third center back. He's had enough good games to show that he is probably capable of playing at this level given the chance.
Edit: Although I could see Nanchoff playing the wing and Le Toux pushed up front.
Barbara has just been an inocent nightmare since arriving. The usual dilmena of getting injured the moment he arrived and some uninspired play.
With this being a two match week against the league's most high profile sides there is a lot of lineup juggling to be had. I think it's logical to have Camilo up front playing Mattocks role on Wednesday night.
In a long season it's likely to see Camilo and Hassli back in the starting XI.
SOMEone has to go, though, if you want to bring anyone in.
Floyd Franks is my choice.
Jay_Duke said: We don't know how much allocation money we have so really all we know we NEED is a roster spot.
Boxall, Tan, or even Franks are more likely to clear a roster spot.
The only way to clear cap space using allocation money is to pay down the cap hit of a DP. You can't pay the hit down below $150,000. We can therefore clear a maximum of $225,000 ($200,000 off of Hassli's hit, plus $25,000 off of Robson's hit).
Based on the figures from the MLSPA, once Robson gets here we'll be $200,000 over the cap. We are already maxed out not only on our cap space, but on the overage permitted by allocation money.
I know I'm going to regret asking this question but how do New York and LA manage to have the squads they do and stay within the MLS's regulations?
Legal_Alien said: I know I'm going to regret asking this question but how do New York and LA manage to have the squads they do and stay within the MLS's regulations?
The designated player rule and the willingness to pay an entire team's worth of MLS salaries to a single player. Allocation money is also not publicly accounted for and can be used to buy down cap hits to avoid designated player markings. Totally opaque where allocation money comes from or goes to.
If you look at their rosters, their DPs make huge money, but the rest are pretty reasonable.
PBandG said: Does allocation money get reset every year?
Not that I'm aware of. Nobody knows how much anyone has of it though. It's all very mystical.
You have to be able to buy down other salaries as well or DeMerit would be a DP.
Brettness37 said:

You can pay down any player's salary. Also, there is no way to know when the allocation was used. The Caps could have used the majority of their allocation before the season and could be already under the Cap as of right now.

Smapti said: You can pay down any player's salary.
The second, as far as I remember.
My understanding, and honestly who the fuck knows, is that the "base salary" is the figure that's used in determining whether a player is DP worthy or not. Demerit's base salary is $300,000, which is below the DP threshold, even though his "guaranteed compensation" is $350,000 (which still wouldn't make him a DP this year, though it would have last year).
I just go by what's posted on MLS' website, and it's obviously incomplete.
Back on topic, twitter is abuzz with rumours that Camilo is the one who's going to be going.
Torkin said: Why would we get rid of Camilo? There would be no benefit. He's young and talented and there really is no need to get rid of him or Hassli unless they are bringing in someone better.
There may be some other team willing to pay a transfer fee and provide Camillo a chance at the big time. You never know. I hope he stays because we'll all our strikers to produce goals this year.
The Camillo RUMMOR got started by a couple of people speculating, and one journalist suggesting Barry Robson wasn't the only big news coming this week.
