Spot on Arne.
I'm working on a follow up article to my previous rant on the matter and took photos yesterday of various sections as the team came out and then ten minutes into the match.
The Southside looked sparse as hell when the players came out (as did everywhere).
As said, it did fill up quicker than it usually does.
I was actually amazed that people even bothered to turn up in the rain at all.

3rd kit. It got press, and therefore more walkups. Also, rain probably has the opposite effect on attendance at BC Place than it had at Empire. It's an afternoon out and out of the rain.
All of a sudden that roof idea seems pretty good ;-)

A bit off-topic, but out of curiosity, how much has membership grown since the beginning of the season? It seems like it has grown, and will continue to grow given the number of people who are showing up to have the "Southsiders experience," and having very good things to say afterwards. Some complain about things (like the people behind us when they couldn't see due to our 2-stick being up at the normal times), but it seems like from the casual/non-soccer fans, the response has been quite positive.
It seemed like there were more bums in seats prior to kick-off today up top in the Southside. Save for the two guys in the row ahead of me who showed up at the 30th minute and proceeded to stare at each other and chat loudly for a good 10 min before turning their attention to the game. Guess they didn't get the memo.
Standing at the back of 252 is actually proving to be far from a great experience. We chose our seats firstly to help spread the Southside back from it's core at the front and secondly 'cause we thought the view would be better up there. The reality has been that there's a long way to go to get a workable critical mass back there. It appears to be about 50% regular STHers but the majority of these are not Southsiders. Most stand but do not participate in many chants. The other 50% is either empty seats or one offs who are there to party more than support the Caps. Since the Seattle game (when we actually had an Sounders fan standing in front of us - luckily he was an okay guy), the shit experience (not helped by the f-ing random Drum Cafe) has driven an increasing number of us down to the Curva Collective for the second half.
I hear the Prawnside calling ....

Canucks regular season games start at 8 minutes after the 'Start', and playoff games almost 20 minutes after 'Start'.
Kickoff happened exactly at 4:06 yesterday. Depending on who's doing the broadcasting it's usually 6 (Sportsnet) or 8 (TSN) minutes past the hour. You can check the programs, they list the schedule of events usually on the second page.
Yesterday, the anthems were done by 4:03, but then there was about 3 minutes of extra music when the players were doing their huddle.
Even with "Canucks timing" many Canucks "fans" arrive late to Rogers Arena. I don't think that makes a difference. Real fans show up early, and the bandwagoners come on time only when its 'important' like a playoff game.

nope... Best part was the march down in the rain. Sometimes it's just fun to get a little wet... wait, what?
You've been spending too much time with Wendy and Caylee!!
To anyone who says the late attendee problem was better yesterday, I call Bull****! All you did was shift the problem into MY section, where dozens of people felt it was okay to drift into their seats 20 minutes after kickoff! On top of that, the row in front of us seems to belong to scalpers, and whoever buys their seedy tickets ALWAYS show up late!
All I want to do is to properly support my club while enjoying a nicely prepared prawn sandwich along with a fine chardonnay! Is that too much to ask?
~X(
Yes. Yes it is.
Because the best wine with a prawn sandwich is a Sauv Blanc, according to Arne.
Chardonnay is fine, but Sauv Blanc is better IMO. Viognier is nice too, but it should be a South African. Crisper than the French variety.
Arne beat me to it.
We're talking "prawn sandwiches", so the preparation is already determined.
Had a nice BC Cab with a steak last night at the Hamilton Street Grill (post-game and an early Father's Day dinner). Some grilled prawns would have gone nicely with that.

You are making "generalizations".
I really don't have any idea what this thread is about but I was hoping by now a plan would have formed to get Marie Hui to sing the anthem in the Southside, but I guess not :(
Ghostdog said: You are making "generalizations".
Ok, fair enough. I'm making generalizations.
My point is that I don't think people are late because they are trained to "Canucks timing". People are late to many things because they don't find the event to be important enough to be on time. Hopefully, in time, they'll find Whitecaps matches important enough to show up on time.
I'm not sure if they always did this before because I'm always at my seat during the pre-game ceremony but last game, I was out on the concourse buying some drinks. On their TVs around the concourse, they had a message saying the kick off will start in 5 minutes and they made an announcement.
Is that a new thing? Or have they always done this?
If the just play that orca bay suzuki add over and over in the concourse people will be running to the stands.
what if marie hui sings really really slowly, kick off could be around 20 minutes late.
I also advocate ridiculing (in a friendly fashion) those who come late. the reason lateness persists in the world (not just at sporting events) is because there's no penalty, it's just accepted - especially in super-polite Canada. Some joshing about it (especially in the southside) could be very productive.
My final suggestion is that if this matters to the caps - and I think it does, why not have reserves / injured/ suspended/ retired/ pdl players/ Bobby / Carl etc (or whoever) in moving around the crowd signing autographs, taking pictures, giving away freebies, and otherwise engaging the crowd. "Dude, why are you late? you just missed Darren Mattocks, he was just here! i got a picture of him kissing Soccer Sue! really good guy, not arrogant at all!"

I've considered calling them up and telling them that solely because of that advertisement, I will never, ever, set foot in their store.
That ad sounds like it belongs in the 80's. One of the worst ads on Team 1040/1410 and there are many!!

Shhh! Don't tell my husband! And if you're going to start posting my fantasies you'll have to change it to Etienne Barbara. ;-)
Here you go:
You're so late!
You probably think this song is about you
You're so late!
I bet you think this song is about you! (Don't you! Don't you!)
Im in on this one!
I really like this....at what point or minute mark and are you going to target one particular section like ....west side....west side(sort of got to pick something ahead of time like to countdown in new york for Ovie sucks at the eight minute marks which was priceless)...your so lame....etc after the 14 minute mark for the bobby chant? just my thoughts .....more over tho I like(actually love) when Chris sings....we can see you leaving!!! classic
Afte my rants on here last week I was guilty of arriving just after the anthems on Saturday. Despite leaving home with lots of time to get to game there was some sort of traffic problem on the viaduct and it took almost 25 minutes to get through it. It looks like a) the traffic lights are out of sync b) people turning left at end of viaduct are not getting around corner because of pedestrian traffic and c) the rent a cops are pretty well pointless for keeping that traffic flowing. Tonight I plan to be my usual 30 minutes early (thank goodness for the 8pm start).
Harassing ticket purchasing Whitecaps fans, even if they don't arrive on time, is probably the easiest way to get kicked out of BC Place. Actually not the easiest. Punching them would be easier.
Also a great way to alienate other fans. "You're a shitty fan! But please join in our chants!"
At the San Jose game when we scored in injury time several disrespectful "dolts" were already standing up getting their coats on oblivious to the fact that the Caps were on a breakaway - thankfully we still had a view of the goal but the people behind us and behind them ALL missed the goal... On the other side of that - our neighbours were arriving back just after start of 2nd half during last game but were respectful and observant enough to realize that they would be blocking everyone's view of a Caps breakaway and ducked down till play ended. =D>
Harrassing is not the word i used Dan. Good natured ribbing of fellow southdsiders is what i suggested. Although we could just go on ignoring it, see how that works out.
I never said they were shitty fans Brenton, but they could be much better.
Feel free to quote my posts but please do not paraphrase or attribute comments that were not mine. Thanks.
It's our lot that we need to win over, we'll never ever get the rest of the stadium in early but if we can get 252 &251 well over half full by kick off I'd consider that a victory.
Maybe we should spend more time trying to push for this in our frequent mass-emails than continually pushing for support for the CNT or the PDL games or street soccer or other non whitecap matchday stuff. This should be a high priority for the southsiders as it reflects on us directly.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply that. But I can imagine that being berated, even in a friendly manner, may put some people off.

I am fine with mocking fellow Southsiders. We are held to a higher standard of fanaticism.
pretty weird day today... most of the people in section 251 were actually in their seats before the anthem was sung, and was pretty packed before the game even kicked off...
if there was a message that was sent, it probably came across. we'll see in a month though...

probably the 8pm kickoff. Most of us are trained for a 7pm start.
My buddy was mentioning that people in his office were talking about it. I think there was an article in the 24 or province (too lazy to RTFA to see if this was mentioned already).
It was noticeable around the whole stadium though.
The people near me are always last-minuters. Last night one woman was 15 mins late for the second half she said it was because she was charging her phone! Not surprised it needed recharging - she spends the entire game engrossed with whatever she's doing on the phone.
I'm looking to move location for next season.
I ran into a few friends who had never been to a game and had got tickets from work. We were outside around 7:40 and they both turned to me and essentially said "we better go in i hear they are mad at the people coming late". So it looks like this message is getting out there, it will just remain to be seen if people bother to act on it
it seems like they are because for a wed night game seats were pretty packed right before the anthems...nothing like the last couple of games...
Last night was the first time since opening day that my row was full. I didn't notice until halftime when I went to get a drink though. Other than the people who came in right beside me at the 28 minute mark, the rest must have snuck in after kick off. I sit more or less in the middle of the row, so it's not like it was a couple of people late.
On the plus side they were all watching the southside trying to figure out chants and I was helping everyone who saw me singing with the words. Very few sitters on the eastside chant and I don't think I saw a cell phone. :)

oh man that's gold! its like they thought they were in for an ass whooping if they came in late...
I'm happy with the 8pm weekday start for this reason exactly. I hope we have more of these this season.
Ya wasn't a fan at first but this may be decent option. Gives people from valley better opportunity to get in and the folks downtown are ready to leave restaurant or bar. Game still ends by 10. Seemed to work well yesterday.
The game also didn't kick off until 8:11
