June 15, 7:30pm-Whitecaps U23 v. Washington Crossfire - PDL - SFU Field 4

Coming of a big win in Victoria vs the Highlanders, the first road victory of the season, the U23s are back in action Friday night at SFU. Here is a map! http://goo.gl/maps/Na8h

The Whitecaps face off against the team they are chasing in the standings for a playoff spot, the much improved Washington Crossfire. With 7 games remaining, the Whitecaps are 5 points back of a 3-way logjam for second place in the Northwest Division.

Bryce Alderson is suspended for this match after being sent off vs the Highlanders after two very borderline yellows. We will likely see Caleb Clarke from the MLS Roster, and Martin Rennie has hinted that he will loan some decent firepower from the MLS Roster to make sure the 'Caps take the full three points.

It would be great to have good support out for this one. The PDL team in particular really feeds off of our chants and support.

If people want to meet up before hand for tailgate or at the student pub, let me know. If there is enough interest we can make more concrete plans.

This is also a great time to bring any chant suggestions and share them with the capos and others.

    Washington Crossfire 16

    Vancouver Whitecaps FC U-23 11

    North Sound SeaWolves FC 9

    Victoria Highlanders FC 9

    Fraser Valley Mariners FC 1

All the regulars on this site should really get out to these games. The football is enjoyable, and watching Alderson, Clarke, and Fisk is well worth your time.

Blue and White Army can tell you more but I know the 135 bus goes right there. Which is pretty funny since I don't even live there and have never taken transit to SFU, LOL!

It's about a 5-10 minute stroll from the SFU Transportation Centre.

Transit options are 135, 143, 144, 145 depending on the direction whence you come.

135 comes from downtown, 143 from Coquitlam Station, 144 from Metrotown (via Sperling), and 145 from Production Way

  • Transit is cheaper than parking up there I'll tell you that much (3.25/hr vs. 2.50 for a bus ticket). If you're coming in from Vancouver, find street parking at Hastings/Duthie and take the 144/135 up.

I hope to be there if I'm not forced to work late. Rumour says there might be an interesting new player in the Residency lineup!

The schedule is killing me - after 12 games last year I've been to two this year and will miss this one as well. I wish they'd consult with me before they schedule these matches. :-P

Gotta appreciate how Mike Lazar keeps giving the Juan de Fuca Plate some love.

Final score was Whitecaps U-23 4-0 Washington Crossfire. Goals from Caleb Clarke, James Farenhorst, Coulton Jackson, and Michael Marousek. In addition, Reynold Stewart missed a penalty.

If that makes the game sound a little one-sided, well, it was. Jackson and Marousek's goals were both serious quality: Marousek in particular hammered a shot at the speed of sound that got past the keeper and lodged between the netting and the frame of the goal.

  • Victoria Highlanders are definitely missing Michael Marousek, as he was their top goal scorer last year.

The U23s have really nice depth right now.

Everyone but the back four, the keeper and Bobby Jhutty were subbed out and the replacements didn't miss a beat.

This is with most of the U18s getting the night off to rest for Sunday's match in B-Ham.

The next three matches are on the road to Abbotsford, Bremerton, and Redmond. Then they are back home to finish the season July 6 (Swangard), 8 (Richmond), 11 (Swangard).

I thought that was a good game and it was nice to slaughter such an unlikable coach and team.

    A few comments/ questions:

1.) Why only 1 MLS loan? Would have been nice to see russell play.

2.) I thought that Parkes, Dosanjh and Jhutty all stood out for me as guys that aren't part of the regular WCFC set up. Would be interesting if anyone was brought into the fold. Donsanjh, has stood out in both games I have seen.

3.) Clarke is good, sure seems like he could ad a couple pound of weight though. It will be interesting to see when he breaks through.

4.) It is interesting that they use the 4-2-3-1 which the sr side hasn't played since week 2.

5.) What is the scoop on Marello, is he MLS quality

I hope to have a beta of my 'residency app' done for the next match. So finally we should have a clock and 'instant replays' at the lower level games.
