Matchday Info
TV: Sportsnet Pacific
On 3 June, the Men’s National Team will begin its 2012 home season with a Centennial match against cross-border rivals USA at BMO Field in Toronto. This match will commemorate the first official match that Canada played on home soil when they defeated the Americans 1-0 on 27 June, 1925 at Alexandra Park in Montreal. To mark the occasion, Canada will wear a Centennial kit specially designed by Umbro. The Women’s National Team will also wear the Centennial kit on 30 June when they meet the USA at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. Limited quantities of the Centennial jersey and anthem jacket are both available for sale at canadasoccer.com along with a special edition Centennial cap from New Era.

The Southsiders are hosting the match at Doolin's with Umbro Canada. Which means we will be giving away some great Umbro Prizes including a Centennial jersey ... just remember to wear red or white for your chance to win.

Or blue?
... Only if it is a Centennial jersey.
Are the 100 jerseys readily available in Vancity? If so where should I go?
Try Soccer Xpress or Vanfield Soccer Shop

Umbro reports the blue centennial jerseys are only being sold through their website.
The blue centennial jersey might be one of the prizes ... so I would suggest wearing red or white ;)
Is Toronto the only place the men's team plays? Bet if they didn't play in Toronto they'd climb the fifa rankings 20 spots. Anything played in Toronto is a loss for the home team.
Wasn't aware of a previous argument. It sounds like a one sided Feud to me.

The literal answer to your question is "yes".
According to Duane Rollin's it's Sportsnet's fault TFC have only sold 12,000 tickets for the game tomorrow...

Well, no, he actually lays the blame at the feet of the CSA.

(rolls eyes until skull fractures)
If you don't react to him, he doesn't exist.
You would think that with TFC doing so bad they would actually want to go see some football from Canada. Agreed though, marketing is shit for everything football right now, though it is not on sportsnet to market the games, it is on the CSA/club teams.

It's a decent piece, and I agree to a certain extent with his point.

He's a twat. I ignore him and the 2% of the time he says something intelligent.

Unfortunately, the opposite is probably happening.
Reminder this is today at 4pm. Be at Doolin's for some great food, drink and a chance to win some great Umbro Prizes if you are waring Red, White or the new Blue Centennial Kit.
Sad that I couldn't find the result for this match on any of the Canadian sports websites ... or worse still even the soccer canada site. Had to check out the US Soccer website to find we drew 0-0 against what appeared to be a fairly strong US team. Anyone who watched it willing to give us a bit of a summary of how it went? Cheers
Here's a huge minute-by-minute summary, courtesy of the Guardian's Graham Parker:

Scored a perfectly good goal just before half time that was strangely chalked off, other than that not alot happened, I did fall asleep for the last half hour though and I think there was a decent chance and save towards the end!

It was a Mexican ref giving a fancy pants Mex American player, who is ill deserving of the call-up (nothing against him other than there are more complete players), a break. A good goal and I consider this a victory for Canada. Chances of USA qualifying for the WC if Klinsmann remains in charge - 40% yes, 60%no.
No save at the end. DeRo had a good effort to get the ball to the end line, fed Jackson who put the shot 3 yards wide from 5 yards away.
The goal we scored was called off on a ridiculous phantom foul. Not even sure who it was called on, that's how bad it was.
Overall, good effort. Controlled the play for long stretches against a strong side. But for the football mafia, concacaf, we could have had a 1-0 result. If we play like that in qualifying, I can see us going through.

Classic Canadian drop off and wait/hope they make a mistake so they can counter system. Canada doesn't look strong enough for the Hex. Need to score goals, no goals? No World Cup. end of line... Dilinger.
The match reminded me how useless friendlies are to me. Waste of my time and $. Excited for meaningful matches upcoming, though not much confidence in CMNTs ability to score.
Utterly dire match. No life what so ever until Jackson came on for Canada in about the 62nd minute and brightened things a bit.
Yeah, must admit the disallowed goal was bizarre. DeRo might have been called for a push initially, but after that was let go, Castillo simply gave the ball away. Maybe Edgar bumped him after the pass, but again, I don't think there was a call there. There's a case to be made that Howard may have let up, as he was looking right at the flag, and the whistle had already gone, but the shot was cracked and may well have gone in anyway. (NOTE: On the US broadcast, Kyle Martino talked with DeRo off camera at halftime, DeRo said the AR had no real explanation for what he'd called.)
Worth noting Castillo wasn't even in the 18 until Fabien Johnson pulled up lame in warmups, and he'd be another notch down the list if Chandler hadn't heard "Deutchland Uber Ales" playing in his head a few weeks back. Johnson is 100 miles better than Castillo.
I don't read too much into this for the US. Third game in eight days, and two-a-day training sessions the whole time. They looked tired and jaded, which I don't like, but could understand. And even so, Canada created nothing until the last 20 minutes - the disallowed goal was a dumb mistake, not Canadian creativity. Not 100 percent convinced by Klinsmann, but I still think its about 95% the US gets through.
Jackson and, later on, Hume, gave Canada a real lift. Until then, you didn't do much, but to be fair, you didn't really give up any chances, either. Wouldn't say you controlled play as was stated above (again, until the late stages), through the first 60 minutes both teams were really sloppy.
EDIT: There was a save in stoppage time by Hirschfeld, tipped a driven header over the bar shortly after Jackson had missed at the other end.
I think it was an excellent match, we really took it to them.

I'll be happy if they get to the Hex with this squad. For clarity, I don't expect them to qualify for the WC playing like that, but I think they can get through this round.
I could be wrong, but this seems like the best semifinal draw you've had in quite a while. Honduras is pretty good, but Cuba and Panama are both beatable.
And if you get to the Hex and catch a couple breaks, fourth and a home-and-home playoff isn't out of the question. Just getting to the Hex and getting 10 meaningful games would be useful for Canada.
Southside Nation,
My country played respectably today, but not amazingly. The goal was called back for a foul by David on Castillo. It was a late kick to the leg after the ball was gone. Harsh...perhaps. Dwayne doesn't understand how football works. The Referee's Assistant didn't say anything to him because he doesn't have to say anything to him. As much as I would like to blame another "almost" result on CONCACAF, I can't with this one. Simeon won't sleep well tonight, but hopefully it ups his concentration for Friday and next Tuesday. Mission 2014 is still on course and I'll continue to support it through thick and thin.
Much Love,
Forever A Team

It is a great draw for Canada. Hopefully the luck can continue a bit. Based on recent results, Canada can't take Panama lightly, though.
I always take the under on Canada in WCQ and I'm always right. The core problems are that they don't prepare enough and they are always out-home-field-advantaged. These two problems remain, so I think Canada is a longshot to go through, they will be close with Panama for the second spot in the group. Honduras is the easy favourite.
They played well today against a tired U.S. team and easily could have won. This team is the best in the last three cycles, in my mind, although not by a lot, and they will miss Simpson and Hutchinson. The big change is the backline and keeper are more settled, which will hopefully prevent some of the bad blunders that have hurt the team in the last few tournaments. A result against Cuba away would be huge, as I could see them not getting anything against Honduras and being in tough away at Panama.
I don't think we played all that well, DeRo was off on his passes again tonight (seems to do that alot for internationals) Occean was a no show same with Johnson. And Edgar... well what can I say about Edgar, good player but way to risky for a defender he gave the ball up alot today and that will cost this squad.
DeGuzman was a real stable influence in the mid today same with McKenna and Hirschfeld. They kept the game from collapsing on the Canadians
Don't get me wrong, I think it was a fair result because the States stunk it up too, but this was a meaningless game for them.
3 shots on target and a huge miss on a sitter (Jackson) is not good enough to go through to the Hex. I want them to go to Brasil but I'm saving up for Russia.
I thought Ricketts looked half decent. How much can he be making in Romania? We could dump the pricey and injury prone Harris, replace him with Ricketts and stil have 50000 left over.
Would love to see us playing with O-omar Salgardo on the left, Rickets on the right and some real ariel power in the middle.

Lino clearly waving his flag like mad, though don't see a ton in it.

I was thinking that about a few of the players last night. Romania, Norway; they can't be paying very much.

Ricketts is actually making $ nil in Romania as his club reportedly stopped paying him months ago. Typically Eastern European crap.
I still remember his two goals against Scotland at Percy Perry. "We got Ricketts!"
Otherwise, I disagree that this is "typical Canada." This is actually the most CONCACAF ready squad we've ever had. We're not built to play to US or Mexico. We're built to play Honduras, Panama, Costa Rica and El Salvador. It's not going to be pretty, but there is a method to Hart's madness:
Step 1: Stroke the ball aimlessly between the back 4 to gain favour with a crap referee who takes this possession to mean control of the match.
Step 2: Slow the tempo down so Roderzz and anyone else who watches the premier league will fall asleep (crap referee also takes this to mean control of the match).
Step 3: Keep your mouth shut and win a crucial penalty from the crap referee who thinks you deserve it for "controlling" the match.
This is the tried and true formula to make the 3rd and 4th spot in CONCACAF. We've seen it time and again on the losing side. As anti-football as this is, I'm glad Hart has finally figured this out and got the players on board.

I highly doubt this is what Hart's plan is.
I think the referee baiting in CONCACAF is just an easy excuse. The issue is that Canada is always in a position where one error by a referee or goalkeeper can doom their campaign because the team is never good enough. I would give them 3-1 to make it out of the group and 20-1 to get to the WCQ this year barring an influx of de Guzman and Hoillet. The team simply has to start playing more games together every year.
