Canadian Mens Rugby International at Swangard (June 23rd)

Canada's 13th ranked mens team will be playing an friendly versus 14th ranked Georgia on June 23rd @ 2pm (Caps play away at 7pm in LA). http://events.rugbycanada.ca/events_details.php?e=70

Tickets are cheap and the GA will be in the "Southside" of Swannie and should prove to be a great time and well attended by the rugby loving community here in BC. The match up will be highly competitive and VERY physical while it goes with out saying the festivities outside the white lines will be very much a party.

If enough people (10) are interested will look into what the group offer is.. but needs to be booked pre-15th.

  • Already got a ticket - B17 or thereabouts.
Rugby Union- I saw Canada beat England (A ?) in the early 1990s at Swanny. If I remember correctly most of the Southside (and Northside) field and even part of the track was taken up by the in-goal/end-zone. I'm guessing "Southside GA" will be on the track.
While I'm on a Rugby tangent. I'm excited that Rugby League (different rules than Rugby Union) seems to be starting up in BC http://bc.canadarugbyleague.com/

I'd be interested in going. I like watching rugby, but gotta admit I don't understand it well. Union is the one where you just keep going, not the one with "downs" (I have no clue what the proper term is...) correct? As in, same game as the World Cup last year?

Correct, Rugby Union has throw-ins ("line outs") and rucks and mauls whereas Rugby League is more like gridiron with 6 downs ("tackles") to score and no forward pass.

I watched a bit of the World Cup, and rugby is still a foreign country to me. Still, I appreciated it for the first time in my life. And, any excuse to go to Swangard...

What sort of price? I'd be interested but also quite unfamiliar with the rules. Still, swangard in june would be worth it

Rugby is now watchable, which it wasn't a few decades ago. It used to just be one collapsed scrum after another. Today it's fast, free-flowing, and offensive enterprise is usually rewarded. My boys play it and I'm enjoying being involved. It's just tag with a ball before the tackling is taught, so a great sport for kids.

I'm not sure this is a good thing, as it weakens a sport that doesn't have enough players and teams in the first place. Kind of like how I don't like seeing American football rules being used in Canada, as all that does is weaken our own game in our own country.

    a) It's a moot point since Rugby League needs neither your nor my approval to set-up shop in BC.
    b) I don't think RL is too bothered about weakening RU in the same way that CSA is not too bothered about weakening Canadian Rugby / Lacrosse / Hockey or any other sport. It's a free market, let the best sports win!

Just when I think I'm the biggest obscuritanist on the site, you trump me. Always disliked that that name. I got to watch one RCSL final at my home field here in Duncan - that was good rugby, too bad that league had to suspend operations. If I were a billionaire . . . Crimson Tide Rising!

Whitecaps is an outstanding name, one of the best in North American soccer and Canadian sport.

    GA is $20 then upwards. ( http://events.rugbycanada.ca/events_details.php?e=70&s=330 )

Unfamiliar with the laws of the game this breaks down the game nicely... (not really but who cares)

Would be up for the Rugby 7's more. Always way more exciting due to the fewer players and number of games.

Always struggled to get into watching rugby that isn't at international level.

I think I probably prefer rugby league better, so better hide from LWO!

This is an international game. Canada and Georgia both participated in the Rugby World Cup. Canada was not out of place there at all. This will be a competitive game, perhaps without the extra malice of the World Cup pressures, but certainly "international level".

Yeah I know. I was just making a general comment about club rugby. Just can't watch it.

Modern table tennis is too commercial and has lost touch with it's roots.

I've got tickets but wont be in GA as I'll be attending with my pops who unfortunately cant stand for a full match any more. Just glad he's making it down for the match, 2nd International in 40 years in Canada while attending 20 plus internationals/club matches in NZ over same period... hard to make his heart red and white when its All Black. :)

Looking forward to this match, going to be VERY intense physically, just hope the young Canadian pack don't get man handled like they did against Italy in T.O.

  • EDIT. Ticket taken Taken by cixceven!

Still looking forward to this match! Even better now that I'm going for free and only missing 15 minutes just telling people where to go! Should be a good, even match. If anything it'll come down to the scrum (like the Italy game).
