Why didn't you just have a polite word yourself? Seems a tad harsh grassing up a Caps supporter who probably only had positive intentions even if you were personally irritated.

The result would have been the same. That's what the job is of the ushers. Those things aren't allowed.
I forgot my flag yesterday, I intended on bringing it, but my mind was on the Champions League and getting a table at Roxy Burger so I quickly forgot...
Great job today Southsiders. We sat in 239, across from the Muppets and could generally hear you loud and clear. Unfortunately, except for the running vocal commentary from my pop's an I, my section was a freak'n morgue. No chants, no nothing ... just silence. There were a couple of well-behaved Sounders founds above and below us, but the rest of the Vancouver audience was just blah.
My dad can't stand for long periods, likes good (centre line) seats and comes down two or three times a year from Kamloops. We noticed that 243 and 244 seem to partake in some action, so we'll move down there next time.

From what I can see week in and week out those sections are getting more and more involved, so that sounds like a good fit.
After spending yesterday afternoon in 245, I'm not sure i could go back to the east half of the stadium. Had way too much fun.

I think you mean west ... 245 is the east. Good to meet you Saturday.
Good to meet you too.
According to the Whitecaps seating chart, the Family Zone aka East Endzone is directly across from the Supporters Section (West Endzone), which would make where the player benches are North and the Loge Boxes are South.
If the Southside is south, then where we are is east. The compass may tell you different, but in these forums that's how we refer to them.
interesting....i'll just go by section numbers from now on.....
It's on an angle, so the south corner is actually south, the south end is actually southwest, and the eastside is actually southeast.

Pretty much did happen last quarter of the game yes.

can't it be both? drunk AND it happened?
And the Rain City Brigade had most of 248 standing the entire second half.
RCB I want to take that fucking drum and throw it away. I am right between them and the main body of the Southsiders and it drives me nuts. It's never in time with what we are doing and then they are out of sink and I'm stuck in the middle. Seriously if you want to drum then go sit with CC......... Ok, now that I got that out I feel better.

I suppose it was both!

This, coupled with the drunken chants of "You drink Bull's Cum" repeated Ad nauseam was making me stabby. Though, to be fair, that was a group 3-5 rows _in front _of the RCB...might not be associated.
The RCB drum can be pretty annoying, from sec. 245. Southside singing away, some of us joining in, then drum drum drum, a different chant that maybe we can't hear but it blocks the Southside.

Even in the heart of the Southside it's bad. All we get is the drum, but it's not in sync. Super irritating, and derails more chants than anything else.
Ghostdog said: Maybe the drums are on time...and everybody else isn't....
Umm no. When a chant is started and then the drum starts after...... It's the drums.
I agree that is isn't drumming that is the problem it's mistimed drumming. A good drum that is in time and not overpowering is great. Unfortunately we don't have that. We have drumming that is not in time and IMO causing more harm then good.
While I'm at I also have to that when we have alot of witty situational one off chants it is hurting us. The problem I am seeing with these is there is only about 10 people repeating these chants, and maybe another 100 even hearing it ... meanwhile we have stopped doing other chants and have 1000 people in our area that can't even hear what is being chanted. I don't think eliminating them all together is the answer, but I definitely need to do less of them.

I was kidding. Maybe I need to start using emoticons.
Somebody get Chris or Massimo to give our guys drumming lessons. They're both on time, steady, and take breaks for dramatic effect. Loved them in PDX

The way Mass drums to come on Vancouver is perfect, with the change of pace in the drums at certain times. If we can get a drummer or 2 to do that, with clapping and all I'm sure we can keep that chant going for much longer.
Not a huge fan of the drum, in RCB but I think that's mostly cause the can't can't keep a beat. It got really annoying last night. On the whole though I thought the atmosphere was pretty good considering the game wasn't much at least in the first half.
The huge difference is that in the Curva the drums lead the chants. With us it's a couple of dudes who kind of try to drum along with them. Very different.

We've moved along the road to becoming the ECS, and the more long, coordinated chants we do and the fewer situational chants we do the more like them we become. Totally disagree, but maybe it's inevitable.

Probably as annoying as the loud a-hole behind you. Well almost. :P
I really liked the participation of the entire stadium with those giant WHITE CAPS' signs. It looked really cool and worked nicely.

They don't make for good paper planes, thats for sure!! damn things sink like a rock...
the organization sure is trying their damnest to get the rest of the stadium to participate... it most definitely gave those people who are hesitant to participate something to do... first those out-of-place orange Home Depot posters that somehow kids turned into noise makers, now these banners... before you know it they'll be giving out ponchos -- oh wait...
If they want to hand things out, I think flags would look more impressive...

The Curva are more like the ESC than we will ever be
Canuckred said: UGH! My ears still hurt from the last flag give away. Too many stories of dying cats and working on the oil patch.
That was a very surreal experience. Kafka couldn't have dreamed up a stranger thing to have over the PA.

I have stood in the Southside and with the Curva in crowds both large and small. I have also been surrounded by ECS during a match. I can definitively say that you have no idea what you're talking about.

Haha - Joey Barton has no idea what he's talking about!!!
Beat me to it Steve!
Having said that, taking him literally, he's right. He's not saying Curva is EXACTLY like ECS, just more so that the Southside.
But again, why do we care? Comparisons are inevitable. Be who you are.
I'm not sure why everyone had been voting Joey's comment down, because he's right.
Zach is a big fan of the ECS and has tried to adopt their style of longer chants, more la-laing woah-woahing etc and other aspects from them such as rule by those in charge and not general membership.
He'll be the first to tell you that. Except he isn't, because I am here, but still...
Southside Nation,
I wouldn't say, "Zach is a big fan of the ECS", but rather he has some respect for some of the things they do and the manner they do them. Zach has developed some friendships with an individual or two from the ECS. Same is true of the TA, U-Sector, and UM02. I also think that people speak of these other groups and their style or approach with very limited knowledge of how these groups function...particularly during a match in the ground. You watch one or two youtube clips and all of a sudden that is who the group is to you. Or you observe them from the other side of the stadium for a couple of matches. Or they are from a club/city you are supposed to have a strong dislike for, so obviously they are horrible.
I don't have time to go into the things I appreciate, or don't value so much, about what ECS does or has done, but I will say that the general understanding on this forum often seems to be blinded by rivalry and/or insecurities. For others, it is simply a supporting culture clash...also a subject for another time.
The one thing GoF brings up about the longer songs of varying styles...this was done during the Swangard era of our club. I know not everyone necessarily loved it at the time, but there were a number of memorable matches when this song or that song was done at length...wasn't one done for like the final 35 minutes of a match once? At the time most people involved seemed to engage and enjoy it. Again, not everyone's cup of tea. I know certain things have had to be done in the transition into MLS...I don't think everyone has been on the same page and very happy with how absolutely everything has gone...but I guess that's life...and the reality we find ourselves in at this point.
Much Love,

Just to stress Zach, I wasn't criticising Curva for being ECS-like. Just meant that you do things different from the bulk of the Southside stuff.
But you know my feelings on them and mine yours from our previous chat!
The "need a goal" version of the Dale Cavese song during our 0-0 season :-) that was hysterical - combined with smoke and confetti cannons. Also the do do doo do Eddie Sebrango do do doo do Charles Gbeke do do doo do Jason Jordan etc that listed the history of goal scorers that went for 10 minutes was pretty funny as well.
GoF,
I understand. And I appreciate how on some of our (your and my) perspectives we agree to disagree...and yet still get on so well (I swear I'll stop texting your landline!). I guess in part I was thinking that some might read that as..."Curva Collective is based on how ECS do things...etc.", which I think that those that have spent time with us, and especially those that have spent time with us and carefully observed ECS, know that there are some pretty massive differences (on match day and behind the scenes)...and yet like any supporters group there will be similarities. There are also a number of things that we do that are a very big part of the history of supporting the 'Caps...and yet a number of differences with the SS.
I guess the words "big fan of" caught my attention. I can't really stand Seattle supporters when we are playing them...and on other certain occasions...and yet I do respect them (usually), but I don't feel the need to constantly put them down because they are our arch rivals...or because of differences in supporting style/song selection. I'd rather spend time and energy on supporting and lifting up my club and it's players.
Much Love,
Forever A Team
I wasn't putting ECS down at all, if that's what you were thinking. What they do is pretty amazing in its own way. Same with the TA. I just don't particularly want to do it too.
Imagine how awesome it was getting everyone in Qwest to do the Boom Boom Clap for the first time. Imagine doing something at the same scale in BC Place. Awesome, right? But if we do that, and other larger-scale, centrally-driven longer chants, a la Curva, we're definitely going to lose the spontaneity that many of us love. No more opportunity for "Houston, you have a problem!" or other random chants that pop up.
I've been sitting in the Curva most of this season and one of the things I appreciate, aside from the global socialization that I miss from Swangard, is the ability to be spontaneous - I'd think it has a lot to do with the size of the group. Smaller groups are always easier to be spontaneous with. I'm not sure what most of the comments are based on. I think as long as people are having fun and enjoying themselves and supporting the club it's great.
