Nice idea and all but I'd much rather help a local try and get to see the Whitecaps for that money and not some kid in Toronto.

Agree with GoF. Good on 'em for this, but I'd rather support a local initiative.

I like the idea alot. And just because it doesn't exist here ... yet ... doesn't mean it's not something we shouldn't get behind.

That's a good idea too - we should see how much we can raise and see how many local kids we can send to BMO.

You know this is the Voyegeurs not TFC - this IS local!

Or I guess we can all watch on TV and mock Toronto for all the "foreign" fans in the stadium and complain that it's not "really" the Canadian team etc. and bemoan the lack of matches in Vancouver and live up to that whiny Vancouver reputation - I'd think 5000 tickets purchased by Westerners would be a much bigger statement. But that's just my opinion.

...and while we're at it Fuck Africa too!

It does exist here, in a certain form, kids up front. Raising some money to buy Caps tickets for them would be something I would be wholeheartedly behind.

Well, local to Toronto, where the kids are and the games are.

This year The Voyageurs have teamed up with the Youth Engagement arm of Toronto Community Housing to send kids to a World Cup Qualifier who would not normally get to go to a game.

Great cause, I hope they do well.

EDIT: Here's the discussion thread on the Voyageurs site.

It's also not just the whole east/west thing but where does it all stop?

We, as a group, have our own chosen charity. Money is being asked of members to support that charity initiative, to buy Southsiders merchandise, to help fund tifo with raffles, tailgates etc, bus trips, beer tasting events etc etc.

People don't have a bottomless pit of money and back in 2009 and 2010, one of the charges some members laid at the board was that the group was constantly asking members for money for various things.

Not a lot has changed and yes, people can only give within their means, but you don't want people to start to feel uncomfortable that all we ever look for is money for various projects, no matter what the merits of them are.

Oh yeah, totally. But there are always things people can do when they have info. I bought two tickets for REB for his birthday and Koda is having his friends buy a ticket for his birthday in lieu of gifts. It's simply info - nothing more nothing less.

Nice touch by Koda. Not a lot of kids like that. You've raised a good 'un.

Just like our Charitable Causes Committee is not a charity. Charitable acts don't require CRA approval!

  • As for the appeal, it's coming from The Voyageurs...a separate NATIONAL supporters group. I would encourage anyone who supports our national teams to get behind this. But I don't think anyone's suggesting we do this as a group.

Not a lot has changed and yes, people can only give within their means, but you don't want people to start to feel uncomfortable that all we ever look for is money for various projects, no matter what the merits of them are.

Big difference is in 2009 when we had the foundation meetings we wanted to eliminate asking members for cash to cover things such as trophies, tifo, and incidental costs. We wanted to avoid the passing the hat around to fund projects that had occurred before that point.

Now all those things are funded through membership fees and the sale of merchandise. No one is forced or even encouraged to donate money to 'the cause'.

Sure we sell merchandise and put on events which have a cost to our members but we have a directive from those same meetings in 2009 to organize events and road trips. For the most part those are done with a zero profit margin as a benefit to our members.

This initiative is not even a southsiders thing but rather a Voyageurs effort. And it's not even the board, or even a board member, pushing it. But rather a general member. that said I personally think it's a good thing and personally will be buying a ticket for some poor kid who lives in toronto.

Well said and well done. We need to expose kids to Live soccer and get them dreaming of playing for Canada.
