Have Boots, Will Travel
  • Hi All,

I'd like to link you all to my blog, Have Boots, Will Travel. It is largely about football/soccer, with the occasional articles about American Football (namely Tim Tebow related!) and there are also a few movie reviews.

Its a very new blog, I only started it in October 2011. I update it as much as possible with articles which are current, but not necessarily the 'trending' topics.

The latest article is a match report from the Whitecaps v DC game and can be found here.

Anyway, I hope you like it, and of course any feedback is greatly appreciated. I hope that there's something on there for everyone.

  • Update time!

The latest entry isn't something written by me, but rather a story that I found and thought was quite a nice anecdote. Anyway, enjoy:

    Sunday League, Goalkeepers and Hatricks

    That is a great story.

  • Hi All,

It's been a while (I've had a lot on my plate recently) but I'd like to bring to your attention the latest update to my blog.

After a recent discussion with friends, which lead to some heated opinions, I decided to write 'Once a Convict, Always a Convict' which looks at whether or not professional footballers who commit crimes, and serve jail time, should be allowed to return to the game after their prison sentence.

Hopefully you will all find it interesting, and it should spark some good debates.

    Enjoy!

Interesting topic, As a Sheff Wed fan I watched the Ched Evans debacle with great interest this season.
I also remember seeing Peter Swan and David Layne make a comeback for Wednesday after a short jail sentence for betting / match fixing and being banned for life.
As a card-carrying bleeding-heart liberal (small "l") my position is that once a "convict" has served their sentence their slate should be wiped clean and they should be given every chance to resume a productive role in society (or continue as a football player if they can't achieve that).
If football supporters/owners/clubs etc want to impose a harsher sentence than has been imposed by the courts then they should lobby for that through the mainstream political process not by inventing a secondary process.

I would be inclined to agree. At the end of the day, they have 'paid their debt' by serving their prison sentence and have paid the consequences for their actions. Whether 3.5 years is a long enough sentence is, ultimately, irrelevant; especially when it comes to the case of whether a football team should employ them.

Yes - Swan managed to make a comeback (I saw him play his first game back) - Bronco Layne was not so lucky - tried but couldn't regain his form. The Ched Evans thing brought out a lot of hostility between Owls and Blades fans - it definitely cost Sheff Utd promotion (thankfully at our expense!!). I agree that once Evans has done his time he should be allowed to play again (possible DP for Whitecaps - we need a prolific goal scorer)..

  • I don't remember the specifics of the games & incidents (I would have been 10 when he made his comeback) but I remember being impressed with Swan's skill. I remember Hillsborough ringing with laughter at some piece of on-ball trickery he did to make one of the opposition look foolish.
So sad a talent like that was lost to the game for such stupidity especially since he would have been at his prime during the time he was away. Same goes for Evans - a great goalscorer now (rightly) lost to the game for how many years for an incident that can only be explained by stupidity, lust and arrogance.

Another one was Craig McTavish - Drunk Driving - Killed young girl in Boston. Edmonton Oilers gave him a chance to come back (I believe he is now in the Canuck organization).

He went to jail for it too; yet somehow magically got to cross the borders back and forth immediately after. You think athletes get special treatment?

  • Of course, there's plenty of pros who have got away with things because they can afford the best lawyers.

I remember reading a story the other month about a footballer getting off of a charge for the most ridiculous reason. Something to do with being stressed or something.

I have a feeling it was Nicholas Bendtner when he was caught way over the speed limit, but I'm not 100%.

    EDIT: Here it is: http://www.fitbathatba.com/2012/02/bendtner-cares-not-for-speed-limits.html
