Mod Note: Moved to Whitecaps MLS
"Rennie added: "We're delighted Barry Robson has decided to join us.
"I believe he had been offered two-year deals in the English Championship and there was also interest in him from Premiership clubs, so for him to decide to come here is a real feather in our cap."
Not sure how accurate the info is regarding Boca being assigned to the league - how does that wok? Buddle wasn't a league signing, went straight to LAG.
Man, Robson and Boca would certainly round out our starting 11 nicely.
Sorry to repeat myself, but I would think Chicago would still have his rights as his contract expired there and he signed at Fulham as a free agent. Where as if Chicago had sold him they loose his rights.
It's the same as how Buddle went back to LA.

That would be disappointing, although I imagine we have a few spare parts lying around that could be swapped for Bocanegra's rights.
I just like how that would make our CB's the envy of the league, and free up an international spot with the inevitability of Boxall's departure. I imagine Demerit would prove useful in convincing Bocanegra Vancouver was the place to be.
We can only hope.
See, I don't get this. Maybe I should dig around the MLS rulebook, but Bocanegra was out of contract. If he is out of contract, doesn't that mean that no one holds his rights?

And Buddle left on a free transfer.

I'm not sure how these two are that much different (or am I missing something?) Here's hoping we can land him.
Trending towards an old team though. Our backline would be 29, 32, 32, and 34 years old. That's asking for a long term injury to an important player.
The rats trying to escape the sinking Glasgow ship?
^More like Rangers selling the rats to keep the ship afloat.
It depends on how he left. If Chicago wanted him and made him an offer, but Bocanegra rejected it, Chicago I believe would retain his rights. If Chicago didn't make a qualifying offer, he'd be a true free agent.
Are you sure we should be describing potential Whitecaps as rats?
I meant it in the most positive way :)
Alright, things are starting to take shape. Blimey. Fantastic stuff.
Wow. Carlos Bocanegra is a bit of a hero for me, he went to the same high school in California that I left when we moved north to Bellingham.
Adds the bonus of being a very good threat to finish off set pieces.
And if this comes off, I like the fact that, as with getting LeToux, we aren't afraid of upgrading spots that we're already pretty good.
Hey, how old are you Yank? Do you know the Sami family? Used to run Chicetti's pizza.
Wouldn't the Allocation system for returning USNMT players apply to Bocanegra in this case? USMNT players returning to MLS after playing abroad are offered to teams in reverse order of finish of previous season. If you take a player you drop to the bottom. I would guess this puts the Caps in the number 1 spot but not sure how Montreal fits in being an expansion team.
The Caps are near the bottom of that list, having used their #1 spot to snag Jay Demerit.
I'm not sure what takes priority in this situation: the Fire owning his MLS rights, or the allocation system.
Schaad believes his rights are still owned by Chicago. Chris thought maybe he was out of contract when he left Chicago so therefore he would be a free agent.

The rankings are reset at the end of each season.

Is this a different "lottery" than how we obtained the rights to Lee Nguyen?

Yeah that was a weighted lottery for draft eligible players that did not sign a MLS contract prior to the draft
Edit: above post significantly more coherent than "fuck if I know for sure, but here's what I think."
Is it possible Jay DeMerit would be going the other way? He's from Wisconsin, studied in Chicago, and I don't think he's really been supported by the new manager. I believe Rennie even dodged the question about whether he would remain as captain.

It's possible, but that would be a stiff price to have to pay for a guy who really has the Fire over a barrel if he doesn't want to play for them. These situations have a tendency to work out so they go where they're rumoured to go.
We could head out back and pull some more money of the Allocation Tree.

We haven't seen Tommy Soehn lately because he's been busy in his basement photoshopping allocation money in large demoninations.

Actually, he was at Training Camp on Tuesday and Wednesday.

I don’t think it’s fair to say he "dodged" the question. He was quite frank in that he has no problem with Jay DeMerit as captain, that he hadn't considered making a change, but admitted, now that the thought had been put into his head by the reporter, that he would give it further consideration.
That’s part of Rennie’s makeup. He’ll listen to what’s presented to him, give it his attention, and explain his initial impressions, as well as some suggestion towards where he might end up. As a manger, there are some things you have to keep to yourself, but he’s far more forthcoming with his opinion than most, and he’s quite articulate when he gives it.
Back to Jay, from what I’ve seen of them at Training Camp, he seems to talk often with Rennie. The players appear to respect him, the supporters I’ve met respect him, and the coaching staff respects Jay. If someone wanted to buy or trade Jay, had a reasonable proposal, they’d listen, just as they would listen to any legitimate offer for any player. But I’d be shocked if Jay DeMerit was dealt away, and with the players we have, I’d be shocked if anyone else wore the armband while he was fit.
That's how I took Rennie's comments re: the captaincy as well.....seemed as though the question caught him off guard as he hadn't given much thought to who would wear the armband, but as he digested it in air, he seemingly came to the conclusion that keeping it on DeMerit was a logical/likely choice.
Rumour is now on MLS site: http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2012/02/16/kick-mls-club-linked-bocanegra-move _ It wouldn’t come as a surprise to most American soccer fans to see USMNT captain Carlos Bocanegra’s name linked to a return to MLS.
But the club that he is being tied to may raise an eyebrow.
Although Bocanegra is thinking of Glasgow Rangers fans during trying times for a club in the midst of financial struggles, a Scottish media report claims that the Vancouver Whitecaps are “keen to take the American international back across the Atlantic.”_
How come no mention of him being contractually tied to Chicago?
So with Robo being signed as a DP, does this end speculation for the Bocanegra deal? Can see him taking a wage that wouldn't require DP status.
Sorry, I'm not trying to be a buzz kill here, just wondering
We still DO have a 3rd DP spot.

DeMerit isn't on DP status, I don't think Bocanegra would need to be. It would be a high wage, to be sure, but it wouldn't have to be DP money.
Wouldn't you think Bocanegra would demand more money than Demerit?
One would have to assume Rangers will be looking for a transfer fee for Bocanegra though, which in turn, would require a team (in all likelihood) to use a DP spot on him.
Possibility is still there for us, but it would appear there would be a number of hurdles to overcome to make it happen.
Jay_Duke said: Wouldn't you think Bocanegra would demand more money than Demerit?
Not massively so, no. His overall track record has been better, but that doesn't change the fact he's a defender in his 30s, and while he's still a quality player, I think he's lost half a step from his prime, when he was quick enough to be an effective outside back.
I wonder what he is stillowed on the remaining 2.5 years of his contract. Maybe the Rangers would just like to get shot of that. Perhaps a transfer fee will be negligible.

The "Kick Off" posting on MLS is just a digest of blogs, press, etc., wrangled by media-moron Simon Borg...all kinds of horseshit appears therein daily...so it isn't a league sanctioned truth organ...
So now it's a matter of whether Vancouver (by virtue of being last in 2011) or Montreal (by virtue of being a shit expansion team) get first dibs.
Lord_Jord said: ^No, we blew our wad on Nguyen.
Wasn't that the weighted lottery, hence our wad remains to be blown?
Eddie Johnson to the Impact.
Bocanegra to the Whitecaps.
Would be my prediction on how this all plays out.....
Haven't we won our lotto already by getting Nguyen? I'm confused whether Montreal or New England would be next.
As an easily confused man the MLS rules are mind blowing...

I would guess we could do another minor asset swap with L'Impact in order for them to pass in the draft if Boca wanted to be here.
Weighted lottery (for players never signed to MLS contracts, IE - Nguyen) and the allocation draft (for former MLS players returning IE - Bocanegra/Johnson).....are two seperate drafts.
One doesn't impact the other, if I understand the rules correctly...
FFT, If that is the case something tells me they could use one of the umpteen number of strikers we have on contract right now. Not that I would wanna give them anything, would be nice to watch them squirm and beg.
For those not clear, Montreal holds the #1 allocation 'draft' position, we sit 2nd.
It's strange that the allocation resets at the end of the season. I recall DeMerit, Davies, Feilhaber, and maybe one more player going through last year. If you were say, TFC, at 4 worst in 2010 after being horrible for several years, you don't get a chance to participate in this system unless more players return from Europe. Oh well, great for us. Especially considering we can sign as many returning Canadian internationals as we want -completely outside of this process. Not that there are any to chose from, but if there were... :)
