This idea had been kicking around a bit and after the interest expressed at the recent kickaround session, it looks like we have enough interest to start up a team.
The details are as such:
-The season runs from March 12, 2012 to August 30, 2012.
-Games run Monday to Thursday nights, once a week.
-We are guranteed 18 season games as well as 1 playoff game.
-Game times vary between approximately 530-11 start time.
-Games run 2 x 25 minute halves with a small break in between.
-The field used is an indoor field the same size as a hockey rink. There are some minor rule differences to get used to, but they are simple enough.
-Cleats are NOT ALLOWED (sucks I know, but turf shoes work well)
The cost of this is per team and stands at $3385. This will of course be split up over the number of players evenly and will run approximately, but not confirmed, $200 per player. We are also looking at the options for the jerseys and have a few possibilities which will be posted later.
This thread will be a place to discuss the team, and issues associated with it. Please no personal ego battles and let's keep it relevant please.
If anyone is interested in joining the team, please PM me your name, phone number and email.
This team will be made up of paid Southsiders members only. If anyone signed up and is not planning on becoming a member, I first off have to question WHY, then heavily recommend it and all it's awesome benefits, but please let me know if this might be an issue for you.
I don't see that this should be an issue for anyone wanting to play...
I don't either, but we are putting together a team representing the southsiders, so only members should be on the team. That's the basics of that. That being said, everyone is welcome at our kickarounds!
So just to bump this thread, the kickaround is about a week away, I know it's at a late time, but it's about all they had for availability. I hope to see you all there!
For those of you who are paid Southsiders members, and are committed to this indoor team, i would appreciate if you could bring $100 that I will use towards your portion of the team fees. There is a deposit required for the team at the time of registration that I will be using this money towards. This $100 will be approximately half of the fee for the season, and I will have a final full number as soon as I know what it is.
Any questions, feel free to PM me or email me at krisaug5@hotmail.com
Any ideas regarding cost for the reserve players? Or you waiting till all full-time players have paid up?
Are you setting a limit to the total number of reserve players?
What's a reserve player? If you're in pay the full amount and be done with it... even if you can only make it for half the matches. I've never caught a break on team fees for matches I couldn't make.
BTW, if OldFan becomes a SSer, he should be captain of this squad.

Would oldfan be welcome on this team as he is an older man in average shape :)
looking into squad number limitations and such, I have come to a decision (i told someone else via email yesterday) that is inline with DavidCross' comment. There isn't a good way to do "reserve players" so if you're in, you're in, if you don't think you can make enough games, then maybe next season. As it stands right now, we're at 17 players (including about 3 that asked about being reservists) if we get the full 17, we're looking at just under 200 per person. it's 18 games, and the day of the week we play on will vary.
I understand life sometimes interferes, and missing games is unfortunate and un-desireable, but if everyone was a "reserve player" then there is less motivation to come to the games and more likelyhood of having insufficient numbers to field a proper team each week. I am not expecting everyone to show up every week, that's highly unlikely, but if you're in it the full amount, there's less chance you "won't feel like playing tonight". It would also not be fair to other players who may miss a week or two. I mean, If I can't make it due to work one week, I wouldn't expect re-imbursement, but that's essentially what reserve players would be receiving.

Well if you knew my situation, it would be different.
From my indoor experience, even full time players whose work schedule never got in the way, couldnt make it to all games. Having designated part time players proves to be a saving grace.
Theres nothing shitier than having less than 8 players per game. And believe me, this happens more than you think!
(Even if we have all these "full-time dedicated players" as you say)
Lets call some of us part-timers and not reservists then.
but how are you suggesting we do it? I can't find a way to guarantee all the money gets made up and everyone would feel equally invested unless everyone just paid the same fee.
Im am willing to pay whatever the cost may be. Im just suggesting, the more reserve/alternate/part-time players the better.
Just my suggestion. You get the final say. I'd love to play. I unfortunatly cannot commit full time. If the team only wants full time fully paid players, then thats the way it goes.
The problem I see is many people given a lesser commitment would do that instead of being fulltime.
my concern would be people opting for the reserves option and the full time players feeling like they have more invested. I have been trying to figure out a way, but the only way I can think of would be a minimal reduction in the cost, and a premium if they go over their allotted number of games. However, i think that is not an effective solution to the problem and I am more inclined to say it's $x (currently $200) to get on the team, for 18 games, and that is all. I mean, if we start compensating players for missing games, that is a bit strange.
This is how I think we need to proceed; Here's the cost, are you in or are you out?
on another note, the vote is pretty evenly split at 10-8 in favour of having a sponsor. Due to costs restricting the season, and an unsure continuation into future seasons, I feel we should just opt for a sponsored jersey with numbers on the back and players are responsible for their own shorts and socks. I think that for a first season, this is a good option.
This is one of the options being investigated

Custom made Umbro jerseys with the chevrons to reflect the proud military heritage of the Southsiders...NICE!
custom made would require a 1200 unit minimum order. CustomIZED significantly cheaper to get
We shouldn't start the season if we don't have the sufficient (17-18) number of committed full-paying players.
We can keep a list of players who don't want to commit but be called up from the reserve list in case we need them (injuries, personal crap happens). We can have a match fee payed to the team or tifo fund for those players for those occasions. I used to be a drop-in like that there, there was also some admin fee, I am not sure about.
at last count, we're at 19.
Another issue with having alternate palyers is that many leagues require all players to be registered and they cap the number of registered players per team. There are often penalties for using unregistered players
i havent come across a capped number of players, but I understand that everyone needs to be registered in this league
OLDFAN Said: Would oldfan be welcome on this team as he is an older man in average shape :)
Why not...I'm an old fart who enjoys football...I may not play as many minutes as the younger members, but it dosen't take away my enjoyment of the game... :D
Sponsored shirts, with each player supplying his own shorts and socks is a great way to start this new adventure

19 for a 50 min. match?
Count on 1/3 missing every match. ~20 minutes per game.
pretty much yeah. 19 on the team doesnt mean 19 show every week. That's highly unlikely, but we will certainly need subs. from my experience on my indoor team, you want 12 or so people at each game. That allows for reasonable subs.
I ran a team for three seasons when they initially started the Burnaby Eight Rinks indoor league there was no cap on the full roster but there was a game day cap of 18 players. Not sure if they're still doing that, it was almost 5 or 6 years ago now.
i haven't heard back from them yet. I will be calling tomorrow to get more information regarding this specific concern.
Really nice choice of Jersey !!! The team can get into really big trouble if un-registered players show up and play. Even though they were an ex Whitecap in our case. Its happened to my old team and the captain was banned for a few games. Plus he received a public humiliation in front of 40+ people.
The old league manager was real piece of work. Thank god he is no longer there.
But still, even for legal purposes, having un-registered players should be faux pas.
Will the jersey be for sale to those members who don't want to play footy, without the sponsors logo?, cos I'd buy one in a heartbeat

+1
^to be determined...
As a note, Anyone who is committed to the team, polease bring $100 to the kickaround today. This will be the first installment, if you will, of your elague fees and will be used towards the deposit that is due at time of registration. Currently we're looking at just under $200 per person total, so this will be roughly half.
Which pitch are you guys on tonight?
I've got a work party to go to, but I'm using the excuse to leave early as I have to go to the rec-league game

After you enter walk on the left side on the ground level and it's the 3rd "rink"
yeah, chris, it's the indoor field, not the outdoor turf
Bring a sweater if you're not playing. It's cold in there.
OK Thanks guys, see you later
Chris said: Bring a sweater if you're not playing. It's cold in there.
Very cold!
Not going to make it, sorry guys
Great turn-out tonight guys! anyone who wants to join the team, but was unable to make it out tonight, please PM me as i have a bit of information I need from you. This is regardless of whether you have "signed up" or not, I have new information that needs to be received. So please, anyone who wants to join the team, please PM me.
they need some heat in tere. Woke up with my throat thinking i was in antarctica or something
For the number of players out (think after two sessions over 30 different players have played!) could start thinking about renting outdoor soon (as long as its dry). Get a field with lights and can set up a futsal small goal game for roughly the same price as the indoor? can divide outdoor into 2 fields.
A fundraiser to help make us the most flash FC around we could host a 5 aside tourney pre-March season start with "final" at Canlan. See if Frozen Penguin can give us a deal on space above field and have a pre-season bash with it?
i just registered the team.
Officially SOUTHSIDERS FC is in the books!
We have, at last count this morning, 18 people. There is room for 2 more if anyone is interested in joining. League fees are due by March 12th, so please let me know asap so we can get this all organized and moneys collected. Thanks to everyone who has joined up so far, and I hope to see you all at the kickaround on Saturday following the Olympic Qualifying game.
Wicked news.
On Saturday, is the start time 11pm?
yes.The kickaround is at 11pm. it's the only time free, it was cheap, and it gives us time to get there from the Canada v Cuba game after it finishes!
I have also made a twitter account so people can keep up with the team it's @SouthsidersFC for those of you in the twitter world!
What sort of skill level is this league? I'd be a bit of a newbie, but sports seem to come naturally to me.
It's not too bad. Why dont you come out to the kickaround on saturday and see how you like it. 11pm at 8-rinks. No cleats, bring white and black shirts and $10 for field rental costs
When do we pay our fee for the league, Kris? Can we bring it Saturday?
