SOUTHSIDERS: YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU! (2014 World Cup quals)
  • To all Vancouver Whitecaps fans and supporters:

At the beginning of this MLS season we asked you to "Stand Up For Your Caps" and give us your best. You did not disappoint. No matter the score, you rose to your feet and sang your heart out through every match at Empire, regardless of the results. You travelled by the hundreds to Seattle and Portland. You held your scarves high in the streets, in the pubs and all throughout our beautiful city.

We know that when it comes to soccer, Vancouver fans have the hearts of champions. That's why we are asking you to rise up once more.... for Canada.

Over the years, the Canadian Men's National Team has been very poorly supported. They've been dismissed as underachievers by the public at large, and they have been ignored by the media. The crowds at our home matches have been disappointing, as Canadian fans have been routinely outnumbered and outclassed by visiting supporters.

To us, this is unacceptable... because here in Vancouver, we know better than anyone that when you TRULY support a team, the score doesn't matter.

On Friday, Canada takes part in the first of a series of qualifying matches to reach the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.  Many Southsiders and Voyageurs are travelling to Toronto to see the match live... but even more of us will be gathering at Doolin's Irish Pub in downtown Vancouver to watch it on TV.

The Southsiders and other passionate Whitecaps fans are unlike anything else this city has seen before. We have changed the way Vancouver thinks about sports, and we can do it again... for CANADA.

It's time to remind everyone that we have another soccer team that needs support.... one that can reach the World Cup if enough of us put in the effort to show that we truly care. Let's show the world that Vancouver is serious about soccer, win or lose... and together, we'll have a hell of a good time doing it.

Our first World Cup Qualifer is against the tiny island nation of St. Lucia. Let's show up at Doolin's in huge numbers to let the city know that when it comes to Canada, there is no such thing as a "small game."

Click here for a link to the Facebook event page.

We'll #SeeTheeRise at Doolin's! Don't forget that your Southsiders membership card entitles you to 20% off food items!

And most importantly: Wear Canada. Wear Red.

Soccer Express's been selling the new Umbro Canada kits; they're under $60. Head on up and buy one, then show your Southsiders card for a 15% discount.

I called the North Shore one a few weeks ago and they were in stock; I haven't kept up-to-date.

  • North Shore always has Canada jerseys available. Obviously ahead of the match on Friday they're flying off the shelves. The one thing they usually don't have a lot of are bigger sizes.

  • I'm also large, but I'm just too lanky. I'll probably be extra large in a few years when I fill out.

If I'm desperate and need a jersey, I'll try and fit into a medium, it'll make me look bigger. :P

I hope that you realize the match is on the 6th, not the 5th.

And in case you're interested, Puerto Rico Islanders vs. Montreal Impact is the next day (Sept 7th).

So excited for tonight...although I will be sitting at home watching by myself...it's been a long time since I have followed the CMNT and it's about time. Going to try and find a kit in town for later :) They had to order in the kit for me but they did have this which I had to pick up.....

  • I couldn't make it to Doolin's so watching at home. In the tenth minute the crowd sings" We're red ,we're white, we're FUCKING dynamite, Canada, Canada " really loud. The sound man promptly changes mikes, or filters the audio so the second time is muffled. LMAO!

  • Canada plays Puerto Rico next who tied St Kitts. You've got to believe we can go top of this group without losing a game.

  • Sounds like it was a fantastic crowd at Doolins.  Well done to everyone involved.

Apologies that I couldn't make it out to act as host.  I had a nasty head-to-head collision during a footie match on Tuesday, and was developing concussion-like symptoms yesterday and today, so I spent the evening at the emergency room instead.  (Turns out I'm [mostly] fine.)

I hope all the new Canada supporters will be back for more.  The next match (Puerto Rico away) is this Tuesday at 5pm PT at Doolins.  It will probably be the most difficult match of the six that Canada will play, so it should have a more competitive scoreline.

  • NEXT UP:

What: Puerto Rico vs. Canada (2014 World Cup qualifying - CONCACAF second round)
    When: Tuesday, September 6, 5:00pm PT kick-off
Where: Doolin's Irish Pub (654 Nelson St, at Granville)

On Friday we made history by packing Doolin's with almost 100 people for a Canada game - by far the biggest Vancouver pub crowd for such a match.

This Tuesday, let's do it again for Canada's most difficult match of the group!

The Canadian men's national team travels to Bayamón to take on Puerto Rico in a 2014 World Cup qualifier. Doolin's will once again be hosting the official Vancouver viewing party.

As part of the #SeeTheeRise campaign, we will give away another Canada kit courtesy of Umbro - but you need to wear a red shirt/top to be entered into the draw!

Spread the word! Use the hashtags #SeeTheeRise and #CanMNT on Twitter.
