Next door to their current location in Victoria, or the space next door to Alibi (in Vancouver)?
Brenton said: That's great news. I do wish they would sell a maltier ale. Here's hoping.
I generally like darker beers as well, but the Farmhead is as close to an abbey ale as we get here in BC at the moment.
Farmhand? Not really malty or dark at all. I like it, but it's not what I'm looking for from them.
Waiting for Townsite Brewery to get up and running I know initially they won't have Belgium beers as one of their regulars but the brewmaster is belgium so hopefully they'll have something along those lines sooner rather than later.
I had a New Belgium (Colorado) Abbey Ale in Seattle last weekend. Was confused why it was so cheap (just $4). Then I tasted it. :-&
Yah, New Belgium is not a great microbrewery. Better from Colorado is Red Bike or something like that.

Next door to their current location in Victoria (same building, I think).
Just bought a bottle of Driftwood Singularity (and Howe Sound Megadestroyer). I would have sworn that Singularity used to cost something absurd, like $27 a bottle, yet it was only $10. Was that a different dark seasonal that I'm mistaking it for?
^It's funny in our Cascadian craft beer world that $10 for a bottle of beer is not considered "absurd." :)
Well, 650 mL.
Well I'm having a 500ml can of Fuller's that "only" cost me $3. :)

Nice, London Pride or ESB?
I swear by the Phillips Blue buck, as a few of you have mentioned, but lately I have been drinking the Lakefront IPA out of milwaukee. Absolutely brilliant. Great balance of hops and citrus.
out of curiosity, are any of the southsiders members of CAMRA Vancouver?
^ I am.
me too!

I was in 2010, but don't drink much these days.
I'm a CAMRA member, as well. danimal, I'm jealous you were one of the 40 to attend. And who does a 4 year vertical tasting of OCD? Was at Alibi Rm last night thinking how cool that must have been.
Since seeing the suggestions on the board I have switched to Blue Buck as my fridge default as well. Love it.
Southsiders: Changing lives, one beer at a time.
Was a long time CAMRA member, but not in the past year or 2. Still attend their events though. Hard to understand all the love for blue buck (or Phillips in general), most of their beers suffer from too much DMS (causes a sort of cooked corn flavour/aroma). Red Racer pale ale is miles better IMO.

Are you not a fan of their Hammer imperial stout either? It ticks most of my boxes...

Just had another look at the Camera website and there a lot of discounts at a lot of the private liquor stores 10% . Also up to 20% food at some pubs

Most sign up events include a free pint glass too.

I should've qualified my statement - I'm not a big fan of their regular beers, their seasonals are much better, including Hammer imperial stout. That said, its not as good as many other impy stouts, especially the likes of Rasputin, Singularity, etc.

Yeah, between Brewery Creek, Firefly, Legacy, and the Alibi, my membership has already paid for itself 1.5 months in (doesn't sound flattering, but my cellar's been benefiting most). Since prices are generally marked higher than their government counterparts, it's mostly about the SPEC's that government shops don't have access to. Imo, a CAMRA membership is definitely worth it if you purchase relatively frequently and like to experiment with a diverse number of craft brews.
For those Southsiders who went on the pub crawl in Victoria and couldn't finish the Total Eclipse of the Hop, I can report that it is actually a very nice beer. Had a bottled one this weekend and it is awesome. Must have been a bad keg at Spinnakers. Danimal, you were correct.
Just had my first ever pint of La Fin du Monde. Gonna compare the first sip to a good glass of scotch. Almost too much flavour and alcohol it was like getting slapped across the face with flavour. After that it mellowed out and is up there in my all-time favourites.

Free Beer Movement, that amazing meeting of beer and soccer, is doing a series on the beers of the MLS soccer towns/supporters groups. They would like someone in Vancouver to drink beer and write about it, as it relates to soccer.
Let me know if you are interested in doing this.

Doolin's really needs to add a drink menu to their website. I don't understand when pubs have a food menu but no drink menu.
^In a perfect world, beer would change more rapidly than food -no?
How long does it take to update a list?
^Not sure. Here's the comment from the Alibi Room:
We’re working on a way to post our full beer menu directly to the site as it changes. We’re not there yet, so keep an eye on Twitter for now and we’ll announce when it’s ready to go.
IMO, both food and drink menu's should change 4 times a year, with the seasons.

Live beer menu. It can be done. Doolins is not going after this market, and likely never will.

Sorry to sound crude, but it's possibly the best digital advertisement board above a urinal in the Lower Mainland. Relieve yourself while scrolling the availability of your next beverage. Plus, they're great to follow on twitter for weekly cask nights.
Many establishments can benefit from St. Augustine's lead, but not certain others would like to be accountable to the info released or put in the work to maintain current information. Then again, the digital systems are likely more simple to maintain than I realise. Perhaps it's just about start-up costs.
Many pubs have been shifting their focus with the rapid growth of the craft beer culture. However, Bad_Gones, you're right about Doolin's not going after this market. Plus, with their current, convenient location, they don't really have to.

Food is all different, though. Beer just tastes like beer!
To be clear, I'm not saying Doolin's should go after this market. I'm sure they've got all the market share they want.

I don't understand why people waste all this time worrying about "craft beer" when you could just get a Bud at the game.
Doolins might be thinking about going after a piece of this emerging market. Not long ago they hosted the first #YVRbeertweetup (or whatever they call it) craft beer tasting. And they now have their own Doolins Ale which is brewed by Russell. I dont think they'll try and compete with St Augustines but bringing a couple of different crafts isnt that hard.
What brand of beer was thrown at Beckham last night in the 89th minute?
Becks :))

They've got a few craft ales on there and the Doolins Ale by Russel was decent enough and good value. I've never been to St. Augustines but have viewed their live beer list many times. very cool system.
I bought a bunch of bitters at Legacy yesterday. The R&B Eastside Bitter is very good, well-balanced. Could use a bit more depth. The Howe Sound Bitter was hoppier and a tad too bitter and not very malty.
I haven't tried the Swan's Bitter, as Legacy was out. Anyone know if they carry it at Firefly or Brewery Creek?

Pretty sure I saw it at Brewery Creek.
Thanks. That's where I'm heading right now, then.
Bitters shouldn't be particularly malty, by definition. hops should be more prominent than malt.
