So the USL PDL schedule has been released. The schedule for the 2013 Juan de Fuca Plate is:

Friday, May 17, 2013 - Vancouver Whitecaps FC U-23 v. Victoria Highlanders FC - UBC Thunderbird Stadium, Vancouver
Friday, May 31, 2013 - Victoria Highlanders FC v. Vancouver Whitecaps FC U-23 - Royal Athletic Park, Victoria
Friday, June 28, 2013 - Vancouver Whitecaps FC U-23 v. Victoria Highlanders FC - UBC Thunderbird Stadium, Vancouver

The Fraser Valley Mariners are out, to the surprise of absolutely nobody but the disappointment of all.

Obviously, the 2012 year gave us our fantastic trophy and our shit website. By the end of the season the Whitecaps and the USL PDL were mentioning it in their writeups, and I'm told the Highlanders will be following suit. So, in spite of the tragic loss of the Mariners, momentum is building and I'm sure we'll have a thrilling 2013 Plate. Friday evening games will probably make away travel difficult but I know I'll be in Victoria.

We were discussing getting the following items made for the 2013 edition of the competition, plus one addition of my own:

A logo.

One or two banners to hang at each JdF plate match. The original idea was that there be one banner on the Island and one on the Mainland to save us from having to schlup tifo on the ferry every week, but if memory serves me right we only had funds raised for a single banner and, given that there's only three games this year, surely one will do.

A championship table cloth for the trophy presentation on May 31/June 28, as needed. Given how well the presentation worked last year at Swangard I bet we could live without this.

Potentially, scarves for the championship team. This seems like a nice idea but hardly an important one; I say this particularly because it seems like there may be a lot of fundraising pressures on the Southsiders this year and we don't want to go to the well too often.

Trademarking the Juan de Fuca Plate name in Canada.

Thoughts?

Thougth I'd start a thread on the 93's since the club is at a point where we have a bunch of lads who are good enough to keep playing at a high level but once the upcoming PDL season is over have nowhere to go in the Whitecap organization. Stuart Neely has been brought in to figure out the best way to do this. Modern day in age; most of the boys have agents by the time they are 17/18 telling them what is best for them, probably parents with different ideas (University??), so what to do with 19 year old boys with no space on the MLS roster. The 93's are:
Caleb Clarke - striker with a nice touch, great scoring instinct, hanging around the first team, I'd like to see him add some swagger to his game myself
Ben Fisk - forward who developed nicely last year and put up nice stats in the second half of the PDL season, Alderson and Clarke changed his role a bit and he adapted well, smart player with a big engine
Callum Irving - can he make up for his height? funny six feet is small, great reflexes and confident in net, great organizer of defence, easy guy to cheer for
Declan Rodriguez - if there is anyone outside the big three who should stick around the club it's got to be Declan - he seems to be able to play 10 positions and went from being guilty on every goal in the early part of the season to being a solid attacking back
Other 93's are Alex Rowley (flashes of brilliance), Tim Hickson, Ben McKendry, and Jason van Blerk (three strong solid players)
Without the big four these four would be an impressive lot on their own Alex I saw in Maple Ridge when he was younger and he was so much better than the other kids - he ended up going to Scotland on a trial and I figured he'd not be coming back. Ben I coached against - but he was 6-7, so I don't recall much LOL, he has a lot of potential and is in the National mix so needs some ongoing development. Tim and Jason both looked a bit out of thier depth in PDL as 17 year olds in limited time but both seemed solid in filling roles though Jason really didn't have much of a run unless it was at games I missed. These four will need to show their stuff in PDL this season.

“The club remains a strong supporter of the USL W-League, and wishes all teams and players the best of luck for the 2013 season and beyond,” said Dan Lenarduzzi, Whitecaps FC director of soccer development. “We’ve had a tremendous experience over the years with the W-League and have utmost confidence that the league will continue to deliver a high level of play, training, and development for up and coming players.”

Whitecaps FC continue to be a leader in youth development programs through its camps, clinics, Academy Centres, tournaments, and showcases. The club also announced in September 2012, its plans to build the National Soccer Development Centre (NSDC) in partnership with the B.C. Government and the University of British Columbia (UBC).

Slow day in Caps land so I was reading some Voyageurs trash the Caps for not playing any Canadians. I thought I'd share my reply because at the end I thought it's really bullshit that we invest a ton in the National Women's team and in training youth players from outside the province and get no credit whatsoever. I know a guy like Bryce Alderson represent a potential return on investment, but if we had instead invested more money in Ben McKendry, would we be any better/worse off? My feeling is probably not. Maybe it's time to go local only. As noted, it's already happening in Toronto and Montreal...

Here what I said to attacks on the Caps for not playing Canadians:

_Why is first team minutes the be all and end all metric?

This view is extremely is narrow and absolutely shocking from a group of so-called Canadian Soccer Supporters. It implies that if the club disappeared tomorrow there would be no impact on Canadian soccer. Ha. What a joke. Three of Canada's 18 in the Olympics today are from the current Whitecaps club. How many women are from TFC? The Impact? More than half the team came through the Whitecaps system. Without Greg Kerfoot there would be no game against Japan today.

Don't follow women's soccer, fine. Me neither really. But this is by far the most successful program in the nation run by the exact same people who supposedly hate Canada. What a joke.

What about youth development? If the USSDA championship match doesn't impress you, how about the fact that we don't have a single foreign player in the 60+ players in the Residency (though I'm starting to feel that way about the non-BC kids based on the comments here)? Or how about the fact that we are the only training opportunity in the country with UEFA A Licensed coaches (we have 7, ffs)? Or maybe you should read this interview with Paul Ritchie to see that a guy from Scotland with no previous ties to the club or Canada, spends his entire f-ing day thinking about this!

http://www.canadiansoccernews.com/co...ng-Whitecaps__

How about this: Instead of running your yap about the Caps not providing opportunities to young players, go found a club in the NASL or USL, or CSL where we can loan these players for some experience?

This is a club, not a franchise paid for by the CSA. If it disappeared tomorrow, the consequences for Canadian soccer would be dire. Anyone who doesn't see this is frankly not entitled to an opinion on this or any other matter of "Canadian Soccer."

Last year in my season ticket holder survey and opportunity to speak with Lenarduzzi, I brought up the quota and the need for more Canadians, as I have documented here and on the Southsiders board at the time. This year I'm going to use whatever opportunities I get to recommend that all resources from the Residency and Women's program that are used to attract Canadian internationals from other parts of the coutry are scraped in favour of an all-out Cantera policy -as is practiced by TFC and MTL, albeit through laziness and xenophobia._

Coming of a big win in Victoria vs the Highlanders, the first road victory of the season, the U23s are back in action Friday night at SFU. Here is a map! http://goo.gl/maps/Na8h

The Whitecaps face off against the team they are chasing in the standings for a playoff spot, the much improved Washington Crossfire. With 7 games remaining, the Whitecaps are 5 points back of a 3-way logjam for second place in the Northwest Division.

Bryce Alderson is suspended for this match after being sent off vs the Highlanders after two very borderline yellows. We will likely see Caleb Clarke from the MLS Roster, and Martin Rennie has hinted that he will loan some decent firepower from the MLS Roster to make sure the 'Caps take the full three points.

It would be great to have good support out for this one. The PDL team in particular really feeds off of our chants and support.

If people want to meet up before hand for tailgate or at the student pub, let me know. If there is enough interest we can make more concrete plans.
