This idea had been kicking around a bit and after the interest expressed at the recent kickaround session, it looks like we have enough interest to start up a team.

The details are as such:

-The season runs from March 12, 2012 to August 30, 2012.

-Games run Monday to Thursday nights, once a week.

-We are guranteed 18 season games as well as 1 playoff game.

-Game times vary between approximately 530-11 start time.

-Games run 2 x 25 minute halves with a small break in between.

-The field used is an indoor field the same size as a hockey rink. There are some minor rule differences to get used to, but they are simple enough.

-Cleats are NOT ALLOWED (sucks I know, but turf shoes work well)

The cost of this is per team and stands at $3385. This will of course be split up over the number of players evenly and will run approximately, but not confirmed, $200 per player. We are also looking at the options for the jerseys and have a few possibilities which will be posted later.

This thread will be a place to discuss the team, and issues associated with it. Please no personal ego battles and let's keep it relevant please.

If anyone is interested in joining the team, please PM me your name, phone number and email.

After having taken a bit of a friendly verbal shellacking from a few female members on Saturday (you know who you are), I am re-opening this idea:

I would like to have a co-ed soccer team of Southsiders members join a league in the spring/summer. I know of 2 leagues we could join, but I'm open to other suggestions.
A) 8-rinks, Burnaby, March-September, Fri-Sun nights, weekly games, 20 games ~$180 per person
B) Sportstown, Richmond, January-March or March-Sept, Sat-Mon nights, weekly games, 14 games ~$140 per person
C) UrbanRec OUTDOOR, Vancouver, Sun-Thurs depending on field, weekly games, 12 games, ~$90 per person

One of the rules of coed is that there must always be 2 girls on the field. This means that we reasonably need 5-6 girls on the team so that if people can't make it for any reason, we still have enough girls there. 6 is a good number for subs and contingencies. I will need an accurate count so we can make sure that this is going to happen and then I can get organizing jerseys, league registration and such.

If you are interested please state if you want to play option A, B, or C or suggest another option, and mention your gender as some forum names aren't obvious for that.

Edited to add Option C

It's getting dangerously close to the MLS Offseason and I would like to start thinking of ways to keep in touch with my fellow Southsiders. After having spoken to a fair number of Southsiders, there seems to be a good number of people interested in the sport of Curling.

I hope to arrange a "Southsiders Learn to Curl" night in September and I am hoping to get a few people (minimum 4) together to join a novice league. Are there any Southsiders out there who are interested in either of these? I expect the learn to curl night would be about $20 for a few hours of learning the game, and the league would obviously be more than that.

I am investigating Vancouver Curling Club (Olympic venue site in Queen Elizabeth Park), Marpole Curling Club on Marine near Oak, and Royal City Curling club in New West near Queen's Park. It appears that most novice leagues are Monday/Tuesday nights anywhere from 645 start to 11pm finishes. These times of course vary by venue.

So my main question is, Who is A) Interested in a "Learn to Curl" night and B) Who would be interested in joining a league?

It's that time of year (though you wouldn't guess it from the weather) to get out and play some more footy with your fellow Southsiders and friends. I am planning on starting up the Summer kickaround sessions in the next 2-3 weeks. My plan is this (not finalized yet):

-One night every 2 weeks, at a consistent location (Burnaby Lake East grass fields)
-Looking at Thursday nights from 730-9 give or take
-$5 to cover cost of renting fields
-We'll have nets and can bring cones to play smaller games as well
-Run this until September or October and then move back indoors at 8-rinks
-EVERYONE is welcome, no basic skill level required.

I am just sending this out to gauge people's interest and see if there is a day of the week which works out better for the majority of people before finalizing any details.

**It's time to get back into kickaround mode! **

First off I'd like to say sorry for the delay, but our venue was unavailable, or the time slots would've conflicted with Whitecaps gamedays in one form or another. Now that we're sadly out of the playoffs, we can get back into kickaround mode.

The rules/info:
- No cleats, only turf/indoor shoes or runners are permitted at the facility.
- Bring both a white and a dark shirt so we can make teams easily. You may be asked to switch teams to balance the skill levels out.
- $10 to cover the cost of field rental. Any excess will go to the Charitable Causes Committee and last year we raised approx. $450 for the Vancouver Street Soccer League.
- Shinpads are not required.
- These sessions are meant to be fun, so overly aggressive play will not be tolerated. We dont want anyone getting hurt out there. We're here for a good time.
- Don't forget to bring water.

For those who have never been to one of these sessions before, the field is a turf field the size of a hockey rink and we DO play off the boards. Friends are welcome to join in. The more the merrier. There are bleachers for your friends/family/drivers to sit if they cannot participate.

Darts - League, Tournament, or just for fun

A discussion arose recently and I decided to see if there is interest in this.

Are people interested in a darts league or team? Would you like to get into it on an individual level? Would people like to get into competitive darts at all? Perhaps just a fun night out as a Southsiders tournament of darts? What would you be interested in, if any?

After a quick bit of research I found a few darts leagues in Vancouver. They are mostly team format with 10 people on a team. A minimum of 6 must play per night, with at least 2 females playing. Some of the leagues vary in these rules, but that's the basics of it. There are also individual, mixed doubles, and doubles leagues/tournaments.

Would you be interested and if so, to what level of participation?

If you've ever watched it on TV and thought you could do it, come on out and put your money where your mouth is.

On Saturday September 8th from 6-8pm I have booked a session at the Vancouver Curling Club (www.vancurl.com) for us to learn how to curl! This session will be 2 hours long, with instruction for the 1st hour, followed by another hour to practice the skills we've learned and play a friendly couple of ends. The instructors will teach us basic delivery, brushing, and sliding techniques.

As we have a finite amount of space rented, this session will be limited to 30 people. It's just so that everyone can get a good amount of time to play and the instructors can teach us effectively. As such, you will need to get your name on the list to save yourself a spot. I will also be collecting funds on the day to cover the cost of the rental. The price is $30 for the session with any excess funds going to our Charitable Causes Committee.

Basic rules: Please bring a clean pair of shoes with you (not the ones you wear to get there) so that the ice doesnt get contaminated. Please dress warm (the rink can be quite chilly). They recommend warm loose fitting clothing including gloves.

Bullet points:
Saturday Sept. 8th 6pm-8pm incl. 1 hour of Instruction
Vancouver Curling Club 4575 Clancy Loranger Way, Vancouver (near Nat Bailey Stadium)
Limited to 30 people so get your name in asap
$30 cost
Dress warm and bring an extra pair of CLEAN shoes

Any questions you can PM me or post on here. See you all on the 8th. Good Curling!

As the good weather is fast approaching, a thought came to me. Are there any Southsiders out there who play golf. If so, where do you play? What do you normally shoot? How often do you play?

The reason I ask is I am considering an event. I propose (and am researching) the feasibility of hosting a "Southsiders friendly golf tournament and Whitecaps away game viewing party". I see it working like this. A reasonable tee-time to start after which we hit the lounge at the course for lunch, drinks, and a Whitecaps away game. I would also hope to have some items available for raffle/auction with proceeds going to our charitable causes committee.

It's a win-win-win. We get to play some golf, be social, have lunch, drinks, watch whitecaps, and raise some money for charity. I am currently considering courses near transit for those non-golfers who would join for the viewing party. I am thinking Riverway in Burnaby (with a nice new clubhouse) Fraserview in SE Vancouver, and University Golf Course near UBC.

So I ask: Who plays golf, who would be interested in an event like this, who would just come to be social in a slightly different venue?
